A Pied Piper’s Tale

Warriors Against the Core, it’s not a festive report I bring to you today. However, it IS relevant to our War Vs Fed Ed.

That stated, I would like you to recall the ancient tale of the Pied Piper. You may remember the version where the Piper would play his flute to lead the rats away. However, the original version of the tale is a bit more sinister. In that version, the Piper returns to the village for payment for removal of said rats. His payment? The children. I’ll leave it at that. However, if you wish to read the more ghastly version: http://www.ancient-origins.net/myths-legends/disturbing-true-story-pied-piper-hamelin-001969

So how is the CCSS Machine playing its own version of the Pied Piper?

I think, we, as educated anti CCSS Warriors, know how: with deception at almost every level of existence.

Depending on what type of deception is needed determines what tune the Piper uses on the flute. Depending on what level of ‘accountability’ is being performed determines just who the Piper may be at that moment. For example, The Pied Piper of ESSA has to be Sen. Lamar Alexander playing his ‘song’ of ‘returning education control to the States’. However, the Piper’s tune for something like ‘filling the skills gap’ or ’21st Century Skills’ could be led by many groups anxious to lead our students away.

In the remainder of this article, our Piper for the “21st Century Skills” is the U.S. Chamber of Commerce.

“Business Leads Solutions”:

The Academy Piper Tune:

First off, watch the video about the “Academy”:

So, Warriors, just WHAT does this organization do to lead our students off to a CCSS/CTE/Workforce Educated demise?! Here’s an excerpt from Oct. 2016:
“The U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation (USCCF) announced today the first cohort of nineteen participants in the Talent Pipeline Management Academy which is supported by a $2.5 million grant from USA Funds. USCCF’s signature workforce development initiative, Talent Pipeline Management (TPM), is a new way of addressing the nation’s skills gap by positioning employers in a more central role as key customers of post-secondary education and training providers. The TPM Academy consists of workshops led by USCCF for business professionals to receive instruction on talent pipeline strategies and guidance for implementation. In addition to a curriculum, technical assistance, and a peer-to-peer learning network, a key resource to be developed as part of the Academy will be the next generation of software tools and applications that support ongoing implementation of signature TPM strategies.”

More Piper Tunes:

One of the ‘biggest’ Piper tunes the CCSS Machine churns out and that ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) plays, leads students astray via business/corporate overreach into the classroom as the answer to lots of ‘skill gap’ problems.

GradsforLife plies this ‘tune’“The talent pipeline is developed with specific needs and current challenges in mind. Standards developed by the employer coalition are constantly changing based on the current economic environment. It is, therefore, more impactful for the business community to define what skills its workforce needs than to wait for the world of academia to catch up. At the same time, this progressive approach may incentivize academic chiefs to develop reforms.”

Warriors, we’ve seen enough non-educator based disaster via the CCSS Machine. We do not need more. Yet, between ESSA, WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act), and HEA (Higher Education Act) have laid a road for the “Pied Piper” where businesses and corporations INCREASE their overreach into the classrooms.

Of the Case Studies the U.S. Chamber’s Talent Pipeline has conducted, at least 2 are corporations and/or businesses are ones I’ve researched and published my findings as to each of their “Pied Piper CCSS/CTE” tunes. Toyota and General Assembly. Closing:

Warriors Against the Core, I do not wish to leave you on such a drastic mental image. However, I am not the only Warrior who’s compared what is happening to our students to awful things. I am not alone in hating what is going on in America, as far as our education system being so overrun with Pipers who deceive, indoctrinate, and conform our students.
We must mute their tunes! We must stand between the Pipers of Reform and our students, regardless of their age. The Pipers of Reform are here for EVERY student, not a select few.

A Nation Scorned

In the waning days of November 2016, there are many  mixed emotions among us as the Anti CCSS/Fed Ed Warriors.

No doubt you’ve seen days worth of articles both in support of President-elect Trump’s choice for the U.S. Secretary of Education AND opposition of his choice. Most of the Anti CCSS/Fed Ed Warriors have been extremely diligent in bringing forth much needed evidence as to WHY Mrs. DeVos is a TERRIBLE education champion, yet this evidence is ignored by Mr. Trump and his Transition Team.

In the days since the announcement, once again, the suggestion that Bill Evers is the BEST choice for the Secretary of Education has been raised. Others, like myself have suggested Dr. Peg Luksik as superior in choice. Not only has Dr. Peg been an educator in almost every grade level created, she’s written tons of reports, spoken numerous times, been featured as an expert witness as to WHY national standards, school choice, and over assessing ARE BAD for AMERICA. She’s even created a paper for HOW to end the ‘fed-led-ed’!! That can be accessed here: statement-on-education-policy

Warriors, the bottom line: We CAN storm our Congress to deny DeVos as Ed Boss! We raised holy hell when it was Dr. King up for confirmation! Yes, he was still confirmed, but we narrowed the margin of ‘yes’ to ‘no’ votes quite a bit. WE CAN DO IT AGAIN! I’ve seen posts on social media during Thanksgiving urging us to call our Senators. There was a petition started to. (As of this writing, there are only 10 signatures and a goal of 100 signatures.) See: https://www.change.org/p/donald-trump-rescind-nomination-of-betsy-devos-to-education-secretary

Put aside the worn out “Make America Great Again” when it comes to education. Education in America can be NO less than ‘SUPERB’. ‘Great’ is a mere shadow of ‘superb’.

IF and only IF the Trump Team wants to end federal overreach in education, then they MUST listen to us, as Warriors, NOT the educrats with fists full of agenda and money. As of yet, I’ve seen no one successful in having the upcoming administration contact any of us who have DAILY contacted them.

Contacting U.S. Senate is accessible: http://www.senate.gov/senators/contact/
*Note: any Senator who voted for ESSA needs even more pressure. Mrs. DeVos is good buddies with Sen. Lamar Alexander, too.

Bottom line: We, as Warriors are like David vs. Goliath on steroids. That said we MUST be consistent, in large number, and visible. To win this battle in the War Vs the Core, we have to be seen AND heard!

Scorned? Use These Facts!

1) Common Core IS  located in more than traditional K-12 public schools!
2) Common Core has been rebranded so many times, the educrats not only know the buzzwords, they use them against the nation!
3) Common Core IS Career Tech Education! Common Core IS competency based, project based, collaborative efforts which groom students for workforce NOT academics!
4) Common Core IS written into the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act), the WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act), and is present in the HEA (Higher Education Act). Of these 3, only the HEA remains to be completely re-authorized. It is the LAST nail to be hammered into the ‘seamless transition for birth to career education’ to create ‘a bridge for lifelong learning’!

Anti CCSS/Fed Ed Warriors, if you see nothing else from this small list of informative facts, NOTICE, far left or far right; on the fringes or in the middle, the same conclusion: DeVos as Ed Boss is a disaster for our nation!

The DeVos 990 Forms:

While you may find my article, so far, scornful or just plain annoying, you cannot argue with what the 990 Tax Forms for DeVos show. My dear friend/researcher Karen Bracken has provided the following evidence.

In short: 2012’s IRS Form 990 show:

$10,000.00 to Bridges of Understanding Foundation (exposes her ties to the Muslim teachings in schools.)

$50,000.00 to FEE (Jeb Bush’s Foundation for Excellence, which supports school choice, education savings accounts AND Common Core!)

$10,000.00 to the Heritage Foundation (which is a huge education savings accounts/school choice proponent and an entity we’ve been warned about as being part of the education problem, not solution.)

From 2013’s IRS 990:

$20,000.00 to  Bridges of Understanding Foundation, $100,000.00 to FEE, and $5,000.00 to Heritage.

To see the 2012 form: 2012-irs-990

To see the 2013 form: 2012-irs-990

As far as can be proven, the 2014 Tax Documents were extended to November 2016.

DeVos as  Digitally Connected?

We all know, as Anti CCSS/Fed Ed Warriors, that the digital transformation in American education is a huge plank in the bridge for workforce aligned, global citizens. As a ‘change agent’ for transformative education, DeVos will have a key position IF she gets the job. However, Trump has stated he wants transformation AND innovation in education.

Warriors, Obama has laid a large digital technology net in his education initiatives! The CCSS Machine has spent billions in creating digital overload. ESSA continues both Obama’s digital overreach as well as the CCSS Machine’s!

Trump’s also been contacted early on by the Center for Education Reform to continue the innovations/digital technology via ‘incentives’. Warriors, ESSA, WIOA, and HEA (in its current form) all embed and continue the data for a workforce based education.

So, how does DeVos possibly fit into this puzzle even more so?
For a brief illustration, look below:

Bridges and Ladders

My Fellow Anti Fed Ed Warriors,

In the above picture you see a classic example of a brilliant mind. Leonardo da Vinci’s “Revolving Bridge”.  He created this, and other bridges for military purposes. The bridges were light weight (easy to carry, travels well), they were sturdy (conveyed strength), and they lasted long periods of time.

I use this as an example, not to give you a history lesson, but to use it as an analogy for the webinar devoted to higher education.

During the CCSS Machine sponsored webinar, education bridges, ladders, and pathways were discussed. Much like Leonardo da Vinci’s “Revolving Bridge”, higher education is set to become transportable (easy to carry, travels well/stackable, chunkable certifications), sturdy with more ‘rigor’ (conveying strength), and lock in lifelong learning (lasts a long time).

The Webinar:

Hosted by Atlantic Live! (an arm of the publication, The Atlantic Magazine) Atlantic Magazine also has another arm, a project called “Next America”. If memory serves me correctly, the last time I wrote about “Next America”, Sen. Lamar Alexander was a featured speaker. If I’m thinking correctly it was the time period leading up to HR5 (Student Success Act) and S1177 (Every Child Achieves Act) were in the making. Of course, as history shows, HR5 and S1177 ‘married’ and gave us ESSA, Every Student Succeeds Act.

Why do I bring this up? IF history is about to repeat itself, then Atlantic’s Next America having Rep. John Kline and other sold out CCSS Machine members gather to ‘discuss’ where higher education should go, we need to pay attention! Especially when your conversation guides are hand picked to feed the agenda of streamlining education to create a birth to grave education ladder or bridge.
hebridge

The image you see above is NOT from one of the CCSS Machine member organizations present at the webinar. But, it does give you a great idea how the webinar’s conversation was geared.

Lumina Foundation, the Gates Foundation, Next America, the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and key members from SIGs (special interest groups) in higher education either had representative speak or they helped fund the production. Adding Rep. John Kline as the only federal Congress member was not a fluke. It was a strategic move. Kline admitted during the webinar that he had just come from breakfast with Sen. Lamar Alexander. You see, the two are partners in education demise.

Here’s the link to the webinar’s introduction page: http://www.theatlantic.com/live/events/the-changing-face-of-higher-education/2016/
(*Note: Archive version should be available soon. You can check out the Twitter account for more information, too. Use #NextAmerica)

The Biggest Warnings for Us:

1) The changes are coming, no doubt at all. The CCSS Machine has already begun turning the screws for higher education/post-secondary education. As I’ve shared with you many times, this is how EVERY citizen from ALL educational backgrounds will be funneled through the CCSS Machine. One of the choice terms for citizens during the webinar? “Human Capital”. The very first comment spoken by the Lumina Foundation’s education ‘expert’: “Post-secondary education MUST change.”

2) The CBE (competency based education), Career Pathways, MOOCs, digital learning, soft skills development, and more are the front runners for all the changes. New patterns, systems, and alignment are either in the works, or yet to be created. BUT, they will be added.
3) Purposed placement of school counselors in our K-12 systems are already identifying students who are ‘achievers’, tracks them, pulling them into a pathway to a baccalaureate degree in college (sometimes early college) via community colleges(which by the way, are Common Core, Career Tech aligned). Then, these graduates are funneled through to a 4 year institution. Look for “Pathways Colleges”. The example program given was “Pathway to Baccalaureate”. See: https://www.nvcc.edu/pathway/ (*Note: look for the ‘extraordinary pipeline to college’. Running this program? Former NC Community College President, Scott Randall. He was key in helping align all 58 NC Community Colleges to the CCSS Machine.)

The rest of the students? They get tracked too. Their path will be directly to community college, get a skill, get a job. Return to community college, get another skill, return to job. Repeat this cycle until you have all the credentials you need to enter your career field. The ‘new’ higher education?! Imagine it for 100% of the population. I’m not kidding. Some form of higher education (aka: post-secondary institution) is what can help America.

4) Rep. Kline’s comments contained these ‘gems’.
a) The key higher education moves in the U.S. House’s “Better Way” plan. It was revealed that the Paul Ryan pushed Plan is based largely on Kline’s earlier work in politics. Education is SO important that it’s embedded in the ‘economy’ plan under item #4.
See: http://abetterway.speaker.gov/?page=economy (*Note: KIine was quick to repeatedly use ‘bipartisan’ and ‘bicameral’ when it came to education. However, for all the bi-partisanship in the House, he didn’t mention the House Democrats view for higher education. If you want to see what CCSS friendly programs they  would like to keep or expand: http://democrats-edworkforce.house.gov/issues/education/higher-education. Examples of CCSS aligned programs: TRIO and GEAR UP.) Kline was asked how the Senators view higher education. He said that was ‘unfair’.)
b) The U.S. Congress only has a few days left before closing before the 2016 Election, so much has to be done quickly. Means rushed legislation moves. Bad news for everyone.
c) “More Access, More Success” via lower costs in higher education. His solutions?! CBE and digital education. America MUST promote innovation! This will keep the government out of the way. Oh really?! I guess the ConnectEd, the Computer Science for All, Digital Promise, etc. are all ways to keep government of education. Especially when each of these i is embedded ALREADY in ESSA and WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) or their related legislation. By the way, Kline said there have been 5 related bills already passed by the entire Congress to continue support for America’s College Promise (Obama’s plan for ‘free’ community college. “Free” is costing taxpayers at least $60 billion.) Way to keep government out of education, huh?!
d) Kline favors more digital, that’s obvious, but he also stated that families and students need things simple..as in a digital dashboard. The biggest impediment right now in higher education? Seat time because it’s taking away from CBE time and hinders credit hours. More P3s (used the Clemson/car manufacturing joint program as an example.) are the best way for America to go.

clemsoncar
5) Add to your list of global programs, like “Education for All” and “Universal PreK for All”. The new one brought up in the webinar? “Universal Free Public Higher Education”.
I found the EduCause’s older version of “universal higher education for all” (circa 2000).

Speaking of The Global Citizen:

There was plenty more in the webinar which can be used to alert us to the ‘global citizen’ mindset that the CCSS Machine is shoving at us.
a) pay as you go/learn to earn models
b) systems where higher education tracks your work hours while tracking your education hours so that you can have 2 transcripts to show you are a skilled citizen
c) eliminating extra curricular activities to divert space for the common community’s good (example: Paul Quinn College shut down their football team (said it was a drain on finances) and converted the football stadium into an organic community accessible farm.) The President of Paul Quinn College has been glorified by the Atlantic Magazine. He’s also been groomed for educational ‘success’ in part by the Aspen Institute. (Article about the Presidenthttp://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2016/09/bringing-a-college-back-from-the-brink/500375/)

weme
I am not singling out this college, but rather, using it as an example. The reason we have extra curricular activities like football, arts, music, etc. is to expand our minds, exercise our bodies. Seeing these vital parts of Americana vanish is sad. Seeing them aligned to the CCSS Machine, outright tragic.

Seeing so many leaders in America moving us away from independence and freedom is not only un-American, it’s criminal!

Going for the Golden Games

Ahh, the Summer of 2016. Anti CCSS Warriors, no doubt you will more than likely be watching the Summer Olympics from Brazil in about one month. In the past I exposed for you how the Special Olympics had not only gone Common Core aligned, but was using the Special Needs participants data for tracking purposes. (In case you missed that one, see: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/12/07/monday-musings-more-than-meets-the-eye/)

So, it should be NO surprise that the International Olympic Games be aligned to a global education agenda. Where there is global education agenda, there will be Common Core! (*Note: As the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) calls it, ‘college and career ready’/’challenging state academic standards’. No matter what name, it is ALL global education agenda driven!)
This in-depth article follows the agenda.

Where the Global Agenda for Educational Play/Sports Can Be Found:

Look no further than the WHO (World Health Organization). WHO is a part of the UN (United Nations). UN also has UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization). UNESCO has the global “Education for All” agenda. UNESCO and Bill Gates also signed an agreement in 2004 for a global curriculum. (See Berit Kjos’  publication, “Common Core: A Global Education”) UNESO also has IB (International Baccalaureate Schools). Those IB Schools have an extremely controversial altruistic helping write curriculum.
The IB Schools are among the educational institutions included in the ESSA.

Where the IOC (International Olympics Committee) is Taking Global Ed:

oed
In the screen shot above, notice the underlined sentence. ‘Sports as a possible source for inner improvement’.
While that doesn’t appear on the surface to be so aligned to global education, or even the CCSS agenda, think about how aligned to CCSS, sports already is!
Think about the mandates in the ESSA where personal learning, student achievement, and behavior interventions (among others) will use anything remotely connected to education to use it for alignment purposes. Consider all the other Warriors who have shown us the mental destruction CCSS is causing NOW.

None of this, of course will be talked about during the Olympics Games themselves. Everyone will be cheering, fawning over how great the Gold, Silver, and Bronze medalists did in their respective sports. No one will stop to think (at least for long), just how thin a veil of deception is being laid over the time in Brazil.

So, Warriors Against the Core, what can WE learn about the IOC’s Ed Program?! Let’s find out!
Website: https://www.olympic.org/olympic-values-and-education-program
According the Overview of the Program, sports is considered the ‘school of life’. Now, let me pause for just a moment..
Not 2 or 3 days ago I published an article about the “Readiness Redefined” National Campaign. Among the ‘readiness’ portions of education to be redefined? Life! (See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/07/09/ready-or-not/)

Also according to the Overview, the Program interlinks with 21st Century Skills which are needed (not to mention also embedded in the WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act), HEA (Higher Education Act), ESSA, STEM Act, and more). The IOC Ed Program is to be used inside and outside the classroom. ESSA has mandates for during school and after school student activities, supports, etc.

The basis for the Program is in the power of the Olympic Symbols. (I kid you not.)
Here is the excerpt, “Using the symbols of the Olympic Games, the themes of Olympism, and drawing on the lore of the ancient and modern Olympic Games, the programme aims to disseminate a values-based curriculum that will shape the development of child and youth character. Using the context of Olympic sports, participants are taught skills and strategies that will help them to assume the responsibilities of global citizenship and civic literacy.”
Below is a screen shot you should click on to enlarge. See the thin veil of deception being used for global education agenda?

What’s worth noting is that the Program has a FREE toolkit for educators, community leaders, or anyone who wishes to use the educational lessons. The toolkit will be available for downloading soon, but in the meantime check out the information. See: https://www.olympic.org/olympic-values-and-education-program/about-the-toolkit

Other Olympic Education Initiatives:

Since 1988 (according to the IOC’s website), there has been a new educational outreach (aka: initiative) each Olympics. So far, there are 21 initiatives. For example the Initiative from Slovenia is called the Fair Play School. One of the main objectives? Teaching tolerant behavior through PE. See: https://www.olympic.org/slovenia-promoting-values-of-sport-and-olympism-fair-play-school
Over on the UNESCO website for Fair Play Schools (FPS) Initiative, it is called “Fair Play:  the Winning Way”.
See all the responsibilities involved in being a FPS: http://portal.unesco.org/education/en/ev.php-URL_ID=2223&URL_DO=DO_TOPIC&URL_SECTION=201.html

Warriors, did you know there is a United Nations Secretary on Sports for Development and Peace? The Coaches Guide (used all over the world) is full of kinds of ways to use sports as skill building for good citizenship. Download the GuideCoaches_Guide_english

If you would like to see the other Olympic Education Initiatives (some links work, some don’t), see: https://www.olympic.org/olympic-values-and-education-program/initiatives

Let’s face it, CCSS/Global aligned education will not be going into anyone’s decision when they buy into the Olympic marketing. Yet, the IOC redistributes those dollars to not only athletes, but sport organizations across the globe. See below:

If you really want to follow the money trail for the Olympics, you can use this Marketing Fact Guide which tells the global partners for Rio 2016. (See Page 11. How many CCSS Machine member organizations do you see? I saw Toyota as an example. They are banner leaders in the adult version of CCSS: CTE (Career Tech Education). See: Olympic-Marketing-Fact-File-2016

Think of it this way, every time we purchase an Olympic postage stamp, T-shirt, or a product from the global partners, we are feeding the very CCSS Machine set on leveling education to a globally aligned one.

Oh, A Few Last Facts:

Brazil is considered a ‘Champion Country’ for UNESCO’s “Education for All” (that one world curriculum discussed earlier). To see all the accomplishments UNESCO is so proud of from Brazil, http://www.unesco.org/new/en/brasilia/education/education-for-all/

Contrast that with the 2015 Brazil Business Report about the problems of Brazil’s education, http://thebrazilbusiness.com/article/the-brazilian-educational-system

The Federal Government of Brazil regulates education. They regulate everything about education, both public AND private. See: http://www.brazil.org.za/brazil-education.html

The NASFA (National Association of State Facilities Administrators: Association of International Educators) here in the USA, has a file on Brazil’s education where you can see grading scales for certificates called “Leaving Certificate” when it comes to higher education. See: EDU Systems Brazil
If you do not know about NASFAhttp://www.nafsa.org/About_Us/About_NAFSA/

To see the Common Core NASFA News Release bombshell I found, look below:
nasfaglobal
The Press Release tells you how NASFA, the CCSSO (Council of Chief State School Officers) and Interstate Teacher Assessment and Support Consortium (inTASC) partnered together to build off the 2011 CCSS for the new Global Education you see above.
https://www.nafsa.org/About_Us/About_NAFSA/Press/New_Standards_to_Integrate_Global_Education_into_PK-12_Teaching_Standards_and_Curriculum/

To get the Global Prep Guide featured in the Press Release, click their embedded link. It is available to download for free, but you must be a logged in visitor or member to get the download. I found a sample Standard, however: http://www.nafsa.org/_/File/_/intasc/InTASC_2015_Standard1.pdf

Closing:

Warriors, I hope you have learned much in this article. I know in researching, I did.
How can we fight this? So much already seems to much in place for us to defeat it.
As always, once you know, go..and tell others. Power is in the people’s hands to defeat more from our top-down educational system than we realize. Get involved. If you haven’t read the ESSA Proposed Regulations yet, do so! Provide feedback where you see the gross overreaches in these regulations. Refuse to support any part of the CCSS Machine you choose to..be it buying an Olympic t-shirt to boycotting McDonald’s. (One word though: the more who boycott the same place, the more impacting the message is). One huge factor of ESSA everyone seems to not know, or has glossed over. Congress can still reign in the U.S. Dept. of Ed!

Monday Musings: Alignment for Wee Ones

To find out more about this NC offering for education, http://getreadywithwords.org/
To find out more about this NC offering for education, http://getreadywithwords.org/

How many times in my anti CCSS research have I found things I shake my head over? Too many to count. However, when I find something that bring Common Core to those who aren’t even school age, I REALLY shake my head..and my fists!

What brought me to this NC created educational offering? Quite simply a TV commercial. When I saw this commercial, I couldn’t believe it. I knew I had to check it out. What I’ve found, I’m sharing with you. Even if you don’t live in NC, with the plethora of social media, instant access to any kind of multi-media resources, we know where we live isn’t really a factor.

About “Get Ready with Words”:

From their ‘About Us’ page, the following excerpt, “Get Ready With Words is funded by a grant from PNC as part of PNC`s Grow Up Great program, which helps children from birth to age 5 prepare for school. It is a collaboration between Charlotte Mecklenburg Library, Discovery Place, and Community School of the Arts.”  PNC is a banking institution. Discovery Place is a kids science museum. We’ll look into the ties each of the partners in this birth to 5 years project in a bit. First, however, let’s see if we can find any other ‘smoking guns’ of CCSS alignments or connections.

One of the things that cause me to suspect CCSS ties is several of the ‘read more about here’ tags take me to those ‘404 error pages’ we hate to see when searching. Why would an error message cause me to suspect CCSS? Think about it, in our anti CCSS quest for fact based evidence, how many times have we been directed to a particular website or document, only to find it’s been removed? More times than not, it’s because someone or some group doesn’t want that particular information to be known. That’s where looking in between the cracks (or in this case words) to see where I can find information that’s fact based.

Aside from the ‘about us’ page, the “Get Ready with Words” website doesn’t have much more information at all. There are the ‘Words of the Week’. So far, there are only a few pairs of words.

I did find another resource that shared a press release type bulletin about the collaborative effort. See: http://www.thecharlottepost.com/news/2015/09/26/local/word-up-vocabulary-initiative-helps-kids-develop/ Why I offer this particular website, is it clearly states 2 things we anti CCSS Warriors need to know. 1) it’s an initiative with an educational vent to it and 2) it’s a P3 or a public-private partnership. As you know, many P3s have meddled too much in education, especially since the Common Core State Standards Initiative came into being.

PNC’s Grow Up Great Program:

Before I share much more about this banking institution’s foray into education, see the screen shot below. Notice, how innocent it appears.

pncprogram

Now that you’ve seen the shot, you might think, ‘oh, that’s not so bad’. Oh, but my fellow Warriors, there’s more to this $350 million early education effort.  Read their reason for doing all this early education activity, “The research is compelling: A focus on the years from birth to age five helps reap dividends for society and the economy — better achievement in school, more graduates of high school and college, higher salaries, less crime and drug abuse, fewer people on welfare…on and on. Even better: the chance to feed the passions and curiosity of all those young minds.” In case you’re curious, this educational effort began for PNC back in 2004.  They are advocates of education in each of the state capitals as well as at the Capitol. They offer reading resources, too. Those reading resources? Sesame Street readers. Sesame Street has aligned with CCSS. According to two different websites, ShareMyLesson.com and a blog by a teacher, Vicki Davis, you can search over 1,000 Sesame Street aligned resources. Ms. Davis blog entry from July of 2012, shared this excerpt, Sesame Street has taken more than 1000 videos and resources (all for elementary school) and aligned them with Common Core standards on the sharemylesson website. This is a great account for elementary teachers to follow on the site.” (see her blog, http://vickidavis.me/post/26820599057/sesame-street-resources-aligned-to-common-core) Over on ShareMyLesson, I found much about the CCSS aligned childhood classics.
See: http://www.sharemylesson.com/mypublicprofile.aspx?uc=2246999&page=1&SFBC_FilterOption=2 (*Note: be sure to scroll down and just read how many have ‘aligns with the Common Core State Standard’)

PNC’s educational resource page (which includes not only the Sesame Street readers, but other lessons as well) has this ‘lovely’ statement at the bottom of their website page, ” Common Core State Standards Initiative: These lessons are aligned with the Common Core State Standards (“CCSS”). The CCSS provide a consistent, clear understanding of the concepts and skills children are expected to learn and guide teachers to provide their students with opportunities to gain these important skills and foundational knowledge.*” (Note: the asterisk PNC provides you is a note which leads you to an embedded link…directly to the Common Core Standards homepage!) To see it for yourselves, https://www.pnc.com/grow-up-great/resources/lessons.html (*Note: you’ll also need to look at what other groups provide content for the CCSS aligned lessons.)

Let me pause here, last week, I shared with you how USA Funds measures our post-secondary students by their ROI value (return on investment value). PNC has done it with the youngest of our learners as well! “For every dollar spent on high-quality early education, society stands to gain up to $16 in long-term savings.” Please, read the rest for yourselves, https://www.pnc.com/grow-up-great

Discovery Place:

This science museum for kids is an interactive based one. It also is tied to Bank of America (a huge CCSS supporter) and is a STEM career readiness location. Here’s an excerpt, “Uniquely located adjacent to Discovery Place in the Bank of America STEM Center for Career Development…” In Discovery Place’s education resources you can find Next Generation Science Standards, as provided by NASA, Toyota and others. Get the guide: DPedguide
Why this is important, Discovery Place is a public place. Meaning its educational resources are available to any educational choice. Including private schools, homeschools, faith-based schools, day care programs, kindergartner programs, and charter schools. So again, CCSS is not intended for just K-12 public schools! To see more about Discovery Place, visit:
http://www.discoveryplace.org/education/resources/

Charlotte’s Community School of the Arts:

From their “Giving Tuesday Share” website page,Community School of the Arts (CSA) is a nonprofit arts education organization with the mission to “transform lives and inspire community through outstanding and accessible arts education.” The School reaches 4,000 students annually through high-quality music and visual arts programming, with nearly half paying reduced or no tuition through CSA’s extensive financial aid, merit scholarship, and outreach programs.” See the rest, http://sharecharlotte.com/nonprofit/community-school-arts
Among the funding groups CSA has, PNC (back in 2012) gave plenty for new educational endeavors. You’ll also find Discovery Place in the mix too. You’ll see the NC Governor give his ‘thumbs up’ to this news as well. NC’s Governor has made no mistake about his stance on Common Core. To see CSA’s article about the big grant to involve the littlest of learners as well as school age children: http://www.csarts.org/resources/news/154-pnc-grants-530-000-for-new-pre-k-science-and-arts-programs-for-charlotte-children
The CSA also receives funds from the Arts Science Council(ASC). Even their logo screams CCSS! See below.
asclogo

Before I share with you how ASC is connected to CCSS, please know the aforementioned groups are not the only financial backers of the CSA.

ASC, Arts Science Council:

This NC Council works directly with Charlotte Mecklenburg Schools. CMS is the largest school system in the state and is very CCSS loaded. From ASC’s Education page, you can find the following, “All programs are meant to align the cultural community’s resources with the Common Core State Standards and the North Carolina Essential Standards.” To find out about the 5 year plan the ASC has in mind for education, see:
http://www.asceducation.org/who-we-are

I’ve included the ASC Common Core aligned lesson plan for the Holocaust. Those of you who’ve shared the horrible times and events during that time in our world’s history is being either marginalized or left out. c3588941-c2d0-4b50-8389-7ce35994a0c5

As far as the Charlotte Mecklenburg Library’s involvement? Between the STEM Act of 2015 and my previously published article about all public libraries aligning to CCSS, you can guess where their educational efforts will be focused.
For the libraries alignment, see:
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/10/27/monday-musings-hitting-the-books/
For how the STEM Act of 2015 will involve libraries, museums, and more:

Closing:
Remember, my fellow anti CCSS Warriors, all this is connected to not only every child from birth to 5 years, it’s full of so much alignment, agenda, and indoctrination. The CCSS Machine may be trying to roll over us, but with information like this, I hope you not only share it, you contact your legislators NOW! If you live in NC, you can contact the Governor or any legislator. If you live outside NC, start looking? Has your state received PNC programs for education? Has your state received NASA educational aids? What P3s are in bed with STEM, CCSS, Next Generation, or any of the other CCSS acronyms. Don’t forget the career readiness components woven in the lessons.

Monday Musings: More Parent CCSS Alignment

Anti CCSS Warriors, we’ve seen time and time again, especially in the past month, how the CCSS Machine has been cranking out the “parents checklists”, the ‘parents toolboxes’, and the like. However, did you know there’s a new “Parent/Community Checklist” by the U.S. Dept. of Education? Yes! The Gates Foundation even helped them pull it off. But wait, so did the Scholastic Books Company! I’ll be sure to include the link to the checklist, but to see the Gates/Scholastic mentions, you’ll need to see the footnotes.

.
.

As far as the U.S. Dept. of Education’s suggested resources to help you become a better aligned parent/community? Great Schools, National PTA, and the federal government. Need I mention that each of these ‘resources’ are subjective about Common Core and not objective?!

There are a couple of other groups which helped create the aligned guide to the ‘high standards’. They are the UNCF and NCLR (UNCF stands for “United Negro College Fund”/NCLR stands for “National Council of La Raza”) So are these groups also sold out to the Common Core State Standards Initiative? Let’s see!

UNCF, United Negro College Fund:

Their website: http://www.uncf.org/
Their CCSS/CTE ties include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation via the scholarship program set up between the two. (See: http://www.gmsp.org/publicweb/aboutus.aspx)
See this screen shot from the webpage and note that the now CCSS aligned GED is included as a qualifier for the scholarship. Note that the abbreviation CCR stands for “College/Career Readiness”, CTE stands for “Career Technical Education”, and, CCSS stands for “Common Core State Standards”.

gatesuncf

Another tie to help fuel the CCSS Machine’s agenda? The support of the “America College Promise Act” which includes free community college tuition (community colleges are sold out to the CCSS/CTE alignment), data mining, universal design for learning, and that continues the grinding down of our communities and their citizens.
See their supportive statement: http://cqrcengage.com/uncf/app/write-a-letter?6&engagementId=117276

Another tie? This tie includes two other pro CCSS financial backers. The Walton Foundation and the Koch Foundation. Walton’s program is targets ‘reform’. Helping them out with this agenda? See this excerpt about the Summer Intern Program, “One of the principal elements of the paid summer internship program that exposes Fellows to professional careers at leading K-12 education organizations and schools focused on education reform. Specifically, Fellows are deployed as interns to organizations and schools located in such cities as the District of Columbia, New York, Boston, New Orleans, and Atlanta. Examples of internship host organizations included: Teach for America, New Schools Venture Fund, Paul Public Charter School, BUILD, Black Alliance for Educational Options, Thomas B. Fordham Research Institute, and Stand for Children.” If you’d like more evidence about the Walton/UNCF: http://uncf.org/sites/Walton/index.walton.asp  As far as the Koch Foundation’s interaction, $25 million for scholarships (began in 2014 and will end in 7 years). The scholarships are targeted to those students in post-secondary education and concerned about their communities. There are other parameters. To see more: http://uncfkochscholars.uncf.org/

Now, are you ready for a bit of irony? Even the UNCF has noticed that College/Career Readiness isn’t improving at all, in fact, their July 2015 reports a lag. See: http://www.uncf.org/sections/News/SS_PressReleases/pressrelease_details.asp?prID=420

NCLR, National Council of La Raza:

Their website: http://www.nclr.org/
Their CCSS/CTE ties include so much Common Core and College Career Readiness support, there’s an entire section of the website devoted to it. Complete with the fallacy of the ‘state led’ CCSS. There are plenty of resources on this page, including two You Tube videos. One is from a charter school using CCSS, the other is how the ‘global economy’ is involved. Gee, can we tell where we’ve heard THAT fallacy before?  To see the entire page, complete with the videos, http://www.nclr.org/index.php/issues_and_programs/education/common_core/

From their NCLR blog, here’s the fifth reason they claim teachers love the CCSS:

“If you want your kids prepared for college and career, then you’ll love Common Core State Standards because…They are aligned to higher education standards that demand the skills students need to be successful in college and in their careers. The Common Core State Standards are our best hope for ensuring our kids are well-served and college-ready, but we’ll need all our teachers on board for this effort to be truly successful.”

To see a webinar from 2014 concerning the “Step Up, Step In” (their name for the NCLR campaign in support of CCSS and CCR), set aside at least one hour.

The NCLR also has it’s own type of “Career Pathways” programs, too. Oh, no questioning the CTE ties with this effort! Their support stretches all the way to the WIOA (Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act) as well. See it all for yourselves: http://www.nclr.org/index.php/issues_and_programs/economic_policy/workforce_development_programs/ Be sure you look at their in-depth blog articles about how the community needs to weigh in on education/workforce efforts. Below you’ll find the corporations which advise the NCLR.      ” AT&T; Bank of America; Chevron; Citi; The Coca-Cola Company; Comcast/NBCUniversal/Telemundo; ConAgra Foods, Inc.; Ford Motor Company; General Mills, Inc.; General Motors; JPMorgan Chase; Johnson & Johnson; Kraft Foods; McDonald’s Corporation; MillerCoors LLC; PepsiCo, Inc.;Prudential Financial; Shell; State Farm Insurance Companies; Time Warner Inc.; TOYOTA;  UPS; Verizon; Walmart; and Wells Fargo”

To see the many, many funds the Gates Foundation has granted the NCLR, visit:
http://www.gatesfoundation.org/How-We-Work/Quick-Links/Grants-Database#q/k=La%20Raza

To see the U.S. Dept. of Education’s new checklist, visit: http://www2.ed.gov/documents/family-community/parent-checklist.pdf

Note that every group you, as a parent, are pointed to in this checklist is somehow tied to CCSS/CTE/CCR. Note the IB and AP (International Baccalaureate and Advanced Placement) are also tied to the CCSS/CTE/CCR and the UNESCO ‘Education for All’ agendas.

RMT: VP, Unions, Career Tech, and Common Core?

Ahh..Sunday, our “Riddle Me This” day for all things Common Core. So, without fail, here’s your riddle of the day.. What do you get when you take the Vice President, add a couple of well financed union groups, provide a lunch in the meantime, AND talk Career Tech Education that just HAPPENS to be Common Core aligned??

You get the 2014 ATF/AFL-CIO Career Tech Education Summit!

Career Tech Education aligned to Common Core..best bang for the buck?! HARDLY!
Career Tech Education aligned to Common Core..best bang for the buck?!
HARDLY!

The Meeting:

Held just a few days ago, November 13th. All involved gathered at the AFL-CIO headquarters in Washington.

The American Teachers Federation was co-hosting this event. The agenda for the day was quite full of all kinds of topics about making the best investment, getting a great return on it (meaning humans), how vital a trained workforce is to our economy, and more. See the entire day’s schedule: http://ctesummit.aflcio.org/#!/agenda

The Known Common Core Supporters List:

Business Roundtable (which has a pro CCSS letter co-written with the ATF) See: http://businessroundtable.org/resources/letter-governors-brt-aft-common-core-state-standards

AFL-CIO’s website has a Common Core Toolkit link, but it takes you to the ATF and no longer is viable. I did find in their Legislative Guide full support for anything opposing quality public schooling, more federal involvement, and the need for programs like “Gear Up” (we’ll look into that another day). The group also is supportive all community colleges, which we’ve discovered in earlier posts are aligned to CCSS. See the Guide: http://www.aflcio.org/content/download/1729/15567/file/2013%20Legislative%20Handbook%20-%20Chapter%207.pdf

Those CC/CTE Supportive Groups Previously Unknown to Us:

Snap-on Tools, a known “CTE Friend” (See: http://www.careertech.org/sites/default/files/Snap-on.pdf)

United Technologies Propulsion & Aerospace Systems, connected via “STEM” (see: http://utcaerospacesystems.com/Company/Pages/corporate-giving.aspx)

Chicago Manufacturing Renaissance Council, connected through Workforce Development (see: http://www.mfgren.org/policy-and-strategy/workforce-development/)

North America’s Building Trades Unions, connected through Workforce Development (see page 6,7: http://www.bctd.org/BCTD/media/Documents/Legislative%20Issues/BCTD_LegProgram2013.pdf)

*Notes: 1) If you’re not sure how STEM factors into Common Core, I invite you to read my blog entry about the connections: (https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/09/02/from-the-files-pcast-stem-and-common-core/)

2) Remember there are several articles here on my blog about the ties between Common Core and Career Tech Education.

The Vice President:

ctesummit

Click to enlarge this screen shot from Twitter

Other comments he made,

“Unions are the reason we have the best workers in the world.”
“America is about promise and how to help Americans have the skills they need for good paying jobs.”
“We have to maintain and enhance our workforce so we have the most sophisticated, best trained workforce in the world.”

“Unions have been teachers-lighting the fire in the working people. If you want to learn, join a union.”

The U.S. Secretary of Labor spoke as well. A You Tube video, almost 2 hours long is available, should you wish to find it.

How the Perkins Act is being used to promote CTE/CC alignment:

The Perkins Act was created back in 1984, since then it’s been updated a few times. However, the original intent was to increase the quality of education that was considered technical or, at the time, vocational. With the advent of Common Core via the Career Tech, Career Clusters, Career Pathways, it’s not longer ‘cool’ to use the word ‘vocation’, now it’s ‘career’. Last updated in 2006 here are the 3 parameters that MUST happen with the Act.: ‘1. Replaces “vocational education” with “career and technical education”
2. Maintains the Tech Prep program as a separate entity with federal funding within the legislation
3. Maintains state administrative funding at 5 percents of a state’s allocation
The new law also requires the development of articulation agreements and strengthens local
accountability provisions. The Perkins Act provides almost $1.3 billion annually to career and technical education programs in all 50 states until 2016.’ Each state gets to decide how to split the funding between secondary schools and post-secondary schools. (source: http://www.aypf.org/documents/PerkinsActFactSheet.pdf)

Related:

The National Conference of State Legislators has an entire page devoted to “Common Academic Standards” and includes the Perkins Act in this. Here’s an excerpt, “A growing number of states are looking at education as “P-16” rather than separate systems serving early education, K-12 and postsecondary education and updating or amending their statutes to facilitate this change. Important federal-state educational programs supported by the states, such as the Perkins Act programs and the TRIO program, must be better integrated with state postsecondary policy.” See the entire article (note: bear in mind the wording used )

http://www.ncsl.org/ncsl-in-dc/task-forces/policies-education.aspx

Back to Perkins:

Sometime after 2006, when the Perkins Act was last updated (making it Perkins Act 4), this presentation was given by the NASDCTEc (National Association of State Directors of Career and Technical Education Consortium) Executive Director Kimberly Green, shares that the Perkins Act funding will reinforce Career Tech Education, Career Clusters; that such programs will be ‘rigorous’ and globally preparing each student; that academic and technical standards will be integrated; that education, workforce, and the economy will be united; stressing some sort of degree, credentials, or similar; the one of the best ways to accomplish all these are the 16 Career Clusters; that well known CCSS supportive groups are helping this effort (like College Board, the National Governors Assoc., etc.); that curriculum alignment, standards alignment, and data collection are all part and parcel; finally, we all must change attitudes about CTE.

See the full presentation: http://www.cew.wisc.edu/docs/Presentation.pdf

*The NASDCTEc is the Washington, D.C. group where CTE is housed. (see: http://www.careertech.org/who-we-are)

When you have friends in strategic places, you can advance the agenda without attention!

CTE’s website has a page devoted to its “Friends”. If you’ll remember, Snap-on Tools (above) is one. If you’ve already clicked on the link to see how they advance the agenda of CTE, good. If not, here it is. Their advancement of CTE is based off the belief that success is rooted in our workforce. This belief is expressed in a book written by a Harvard professor. As we’ve learned before, Harvard is knee deep in Common Core.
Another friend, “First Book”. The logo is a cute one where you see what looks like a little one with their nose deep in a book. By making sure the books delivered to those in need are along the CTE Career Clusters, it’s as they stated, ‘a win-win’. (see: http://www.careertech.org/sites/default/files/FirstBook.pdf)

Yet another friend, “Toyota” helps CTE by having lots of specialized jobs which need skilled workers. ‘If you’re a CTE student, then you’ll be just the right kind of employee.’ Hmmm, I’m not saying this, but I know some day to day stories where some of these auto CTE students are not getting the right education in secondary schools (one such student had never learned to spell his own name), so I’m not sure how becoming a CTE auto worker will fix that, but then..I’m not a friend of Common Core, CTE. (see Toyota’s commitment to CTE: http://www.careertech.org/sites/default/files/Toyota.pdf)

To see the rest of the “Friends”, visit: http://www.careertech.org/friends-cte

Final riddle: Did you know there’s a caucus for this?

Career Tech Education has its very own caucus in Washington! Yes, indeed. Here’s the website address:

http://www.acteonline.org/caucus/#.VGU06fnF8lc

The mission statement, “The Career and Technical Education Caucus is a bi-partisan group of Members of Congress created to enhance awareness in Congress of the importance of career and technical education in preparing a well-educated and skilled workforce in America.”

This caucus comes complete with a ‘support fund’ where donations are used to help fund research, etc. (be sure to click on that tab) There’s also an upcoming “Career Tech Vision Conference” next week, Nov. 19th..if we hurry we can get to Nashville, TN to hear U.S. Dept. of Labor Secretary, Mr. Perez; Diane Ravitch and others promote CTE. Here’s the flyer: http://careertechvision.com/ If we get there in time for the pre-conference activities, we can get in on the Harvard/Pearson “Pathways to Prosperity” inspired construction career pathway. Even the U.S. Army will be there.

Why, I bet, if we hurry we might even get a sneak peak at the Grand Ole Opry!

How interesting the 'who's who' in CCSS, CTE, Career Pathways is becoming.
How interesting the ‘who’s who’ in CCSS, CTE, Career Pathways is becoming.
