Weekend News: Looking at the 2016 NC Primary, Part One

It took me several minutes to find a website featuring more than the Gubernatorial Primary.
It took me several minutes to find a website featuring more than the Gubernatorial Primary for NC.

Greetings this weekend, my trusted anti CCSS Warriors (To be more accurate since the ESSA{Every Student Succeeds Act} passed into law, maybe I should refer to you as the CCSS*/CTE*/CCR* Warriors? But no matter what label is slapped over the ‘CCSS’, peel them back and it is STILL Common Core!) *CCSS: Common Core State Standards/*CTE: Career Tech Education/*CCR: College and Career Readiness (a special ‘favorite’ phrase embedded in the ESSA)

Each of our states is gearing up for elections in 2016. Some of our states will have primaries, some won’t. My news this weekend is especially for my NC Warriors, as we have a race that so far, has been very kept in the corner. Well, you know me…it is time to shine the light on that corner!! Before we turn on the hypothetical flashlight, though, I want to encourage all the Warriors in other states. IF you are having election races soon, do you know all the candidates to consider? Do you even know if there is a race?

From what I have seen and heard here in NC, I had very scant information about one of THE most important races: The Superintendent of Public Instruction! Why?!  Considering the importance of this position and how many people are to be impacted, I would think MOUNTAINS of attention would already be ‘out there’. But as you see above, only one candidate has an embedded website.

While we are pondering this ‘buried’ race, consider this: I didn’t find it on my NC voter guide website (the most recent guide was dated 2015). So, I went to another one: total dud of a website. Then, when steered to another, it a became a ‘wild goose chase’ on another national voter site, where it finally becomes obvious you will not even see NC featured! EGADS, Warriors!!
I found it on a national election information website(see: http://www.uselections.com/nc/nc.htm)!!  I am getting the distinct feeling that something (could it be the CCSS Machine?!) is purposefully hiding this March 2016 Primary. However, before you think my tin foil hat is on a bit too tightly, let’s see IF there is, in fact, more information available about this race.

This edition of my Weekend News will be the FIRST in a two part report. There are 2 Democrats and 3 Republicans in this race. We start with the Democrats below.

Dr. Atkinson’s website:

Again, another wild goose chase. Geez, by the time a citizen unearths all the needed information, they may be so frustrated they will think it isn’t worth researching! (Maybe that is the CCSS Machine’s wish?!) I even tried the embedded link in the US Elections website featured above and it was inaccurate.

While it appears her campaign site is way out in the cyberspace world and I have a deadline to meet, I can share with you some of the news she has been featured in concerning this upcoming election.

1) According to the Raleigh CBS TV Station, WRAL (on 1/8/16),  Dr. Atkinson had several predictions for the state of NC in 2016 and this was among them. “I will be re-elected as State Superintendent of Public Instruction.”  You need to see her other predictions as they include assessments, Pre-K, and more. Access the information: http://www.wral.com/state-superintendent-shares-predictions-for-nc-public-schools-in-2016/15217644/
2) According to another website, Lillian’s List (a group supporting women who are creating  progressive changes in NC), Atkinson will have their full support. This will be along with several other key political positions, Lillian’s List will support. See: http://www.lillianslist.org/blog/2016-january-newsletter-new (To see the progressive women LL has helped place in office, see: http://www.lillianslist.org/candidates/elected)
See below for an upcoming ‘kick off’ event where Atkinson (among others (will be featured).

http://www.lillianslist.org/events/2016-campaign-kickoff-luncheon

3) I FINALLY was able to uncover Dr. Atkinson’s website (after many hours). How? It was featured on her Twitter account! Her website has almost no information about anything in the future except the words “Help me continue the journey for the sake of children and NC’s prosperity.” (see her site: http://www.drjuneatkinson.com/)

While we on the subject, you can learn a lot more about Atkinson from her tweets (see: https://twitter.com/DrJuneAtkinson).
Such as what CCSS Machine rhetoric she is spinning in support of the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act), or her sharing about a Dec. 2015 Washington, D.C. meeting. It was called the ‘White House Convening of State Educational Leaders’. The only thing you will learn is she was there. That’s it.

Being the researcher I am, I found more information about the ‘Convening’ from CT and OR attendees! Below is from the CT source. (see: http://www.housedems.ct.gov/cook/2015/pr065_2015-12-16.asp#.Vppf1vkrLIU)

“Topics discussed included: high school redesign; tuition-free Community College; Computer Science; College Opportunity and Affordability; Early Education; FAFSA; and College Scorecard”

From the OR source:
Who was leading the education leaders at the Convening: U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, incoming Acting U.S. Secretary of Education, John King, Senior Officials from the White House and the U.S. Department of Education and other national education leaders for The White House Convening of State Education Leaders on December 8, 2015.” (see:
https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/johnsonm/Documents/Johnson%20White%20House.pdf
)

Related: The U.S. Dept. of Education released two days AFTER the Convening, the 2016 National Education Technology Plan. The subtitle? Future Ready Learning, Re-imagining the Role of Technology in Education” (see: http://sites.ed.gov/octae/2015/12/)

How is this related? NC is fully entrenched in Future Ready Schools!! See: http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/docs/gradrequirements/resources/gradchecklists.pdf) To see a Future Ready School Summit Meeting (contains all the notes and information an anti CCSS Warrior needs to find new ‘ammo’ for the War  Against the Core), see: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jrz91itHcJ4-veKPMSrfCLUXihl9GJwf0az-vwQDyMI/edit?pref=2&pli=1

**Before we move to the other candidate I wanted to explain WHY I went so far into detail with Atkinson’s ties. Whether you live in NC or not, her stance on education WILL impact you! As President of the CCSSO, her influence is felt everywhere in education! Besides, as the head over the entity which owns half the copyright to the CCS Standards, we don’t have to guess how supportive (or sold out to) of the Common Core she is!

 Henry Pankey’s Campaign:

According to the Winston-Salem(NC) Journal’s article about Pankey, his campaign is more grassroots in nature than the Atkinson’s. The article tells you some about his background before it launches into (at that point questionable) Atkinson’s tactics. Poor guy can’t even get a full article. See: http://www.journalnow.com/news/columnists/scott_sexton/sexton-henry-pankey-s-qualifications-for-n-c-superintendent-more/article_9923498c-e3d5-11e4-bdf1-6b7e3fe8731a.html

Below is  a picture of Pankey:

turnaround

AEI (American Entertainment International)Speaker’s Bureau had this to share about Pankey, “Henry Pankey’s new book ‘How to Turn Around low Performing Schools’ will be his step by step detailed platform as he runs for North Carolina State Superintendent of Instruction. It includes common sense basics designed to turn around struggling schools and create “Schools of Excellence”. The successful outcomes have been vetted and certified by the North Carolina Department of Instruction, newspapers, news reports and magazines.”

Hold on, educational success worthy of an entire state has  been vetted by the media?! Where is the legislative vetting? The teachers’ vetting? Aren’t they much more credible that the media’s approval?! The biography goes on to share this: “Henry Pankey is best known as a school improvement mentor and highly effective tough love urban principal.”

With all the behavior interventions in place, as well as the huge additions the ESSA will usher into NC schools (as it will in every other stated) I question the school improvement tactics, the mentoring, and most especially the tough love. We Warriors have already seen enough awful evidence of the CCSS Machine’s mind altering moves in education, do we really need more?!
See what else the AEI website has to say: http://aeispeakers.com/speakerbio.php?SpeakerID=770

Over on http://www.henrypankeyjr.com, the list of praises for him is quite revealing when you consider the presence of  the CCSS Machine (ie: U.S. Ed leaders, public instruction groups, etc.) See: http://www.henryjpankey.com/testimonials

Related: “Schools of Excellence”, are not only in NC, the schools are in other states as well. See the 2014 (latest list I could find) of nation-wide Schools of Excellence:
http://www.magnet.edu/files/awards/school-of-excellence-list-2014-merit.pdf
It is important to point out here that exactly what qualifies a school to be tagged as one of excellence is a bit harder to define. Why? Well, you have the Merit reference in the above link, then there is the National PTA’s program, then the Blue Ribbon Schools program in the U.S. Dept. of Ed (which also is an excellence distinction awarded to ANY type of school meeting the parameters). I also found the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges has a School of Excellence program, too! The CCSS Machine is tied to the National PTA, the U.S. Dept. of Ed, the Magnet/Merit, AND the Career Schools/Colleges entities! See: https://www.pta.org/excellence (PTA’s site);
http://www.accsc.org/Events/Professional-Development-Conference/Award-Winners/Schools-of-Excellence.aspx (Career Schools/College’s site); http://www2.ed.gov/programs/nclbbrs/index.html (the U.S. Dept. of Ed’s site)

Mentoring under the CCSS: The ASCD (Gates Foundation funded and very much a part of the CCSS Machine) features many resources for ‘tough love mentoring’ aligned to CCSS.
See: http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/apr04/vol61/num07/-Mentoring-New-Leaders.aspx
Here is a document from CA where mentoring and CCSS are drilled down on people:

The Center for American Progress has a Teacher Success guide for mentoring and CCSS:

The effect of Robert Marzano’s behavior interventions are already well in place not only in NC, but in the rest of the USA. Here is everything I have on his work: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/?s=Marzano

Whether or not, Pankey would carry on what Atkinson has put into play for NC, will of course, be decided later, should he survive the Primary. However, I am raising concerns (with the above related resources)  to help emphasize that  there are serious questions the citizens need to ask BEFORE they vote!  If either of these is against more Common Core (aka: College/Career Readiness, NC Essential Standards, Career Tech Education, etc.) it certainly does NOT look like it.

In “Monday’s Musings” I will look into the 3 Republicans vying for the NC Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Weekend News: CCSS/CTE Catch Up Edition

divameme

For this edition of my “Weekend News”, here’s a takeaway ‘spoiler’: No matter where you are in the War Against the Core, there’s something for everyone in this edition. Regardless of educational choice, CCSS is set to control education.

If you are involved in traditional public education, the CCSS Machine is the most well known. But what about those NOT in traditional public education? It’s solidly there as well. When you look at the agenda behind the illegally based education reform, the goal is total alignment, not just for education, but for our entire nation. Why? Workforce, the economy, and global citizenry.

Common Core and the Special Needs Students:

Here’s the latest information I found from the Learning Sciences International (which is tied to Robert Marzano). You can find out how this social emotional, pro CCSS push is targeting special needs students, their families, their teachers, and other educational staff.
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/11/03/ftf-new-ccss-unpacking-guide/

This article, which was published near the end of October 2015, is one you’ll want to read due to its increased push for data mining; parent alignment from the U.S. Dept. of Education, and much more. It also ties to the re-authorization of the ESEA.
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/10/26/monday-musings-the-ccss-are-you-kidding-me-files/

This article, from mid October 2015, reveals how IDEA funding and more, are being abused for the post-secondary alignment to all things CCSS, CTE for students with any sort of special needs, or ‘at risk’ students. Even if you do not have a student in either of these populations, it is OUR tax money which funds IDEA
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/10/19/monday-musings-idea-when-good-goes-ccscte-bad/

Common  Core, Career Tech Education, Career Pathways, STEM, and the ESEA Re-authorization:

Congress is poised to be voting anytime now on the combination bill where the HR5 and S1177 (Student Success Act and the Every Child Achieves Act, respectively)  This article gives you a review for those who’ve been fighting CCSS for awhile, and for those who are new to the fight, this article can give you a quick look at why we MUST call our Senators and Representatives as soon as possible to HALT the re-authorization!
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/11/05/tech-thursday-ccsscte-low-down/

This key article is certainly one anyone needs to read or re-read! If you think the STEM Act of 2015 is a ‘good thing’ for education, I urge you to reconsider!
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/10/21/wybi-tying-stem-to-ccss-again/

Common Core, Career Pathways, and STEM for the Babies:

While we’ve heard and read many articles about the mental damage the CCSS brings students; the Universal PreK push, this article gives you a NC based pro CCSS initiative geared for those with children who are newborns all the way to age 5! While this is NC based, it reaches untold numbers outside NC. You can also find another financial institution meddling in education. To date, I’ve been able to find 3 different such cases: one for post-secondary CCSS, CTE alignment; one for the youngest of USA citizens, and one for promoting anything the CCSS Machine grinds out!
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/11/02/monday-musings-alignment-for-wee-ones/

Common Core Entities Aligning School Personnel and Others:

This article was geared for a “Halloween” theme, but regardless, it is still vital ‘need to know’ information. During all the research I’ve conducted, I’ve shared many groups seeking to align our school counselors, principals, school board members, and, school superintendents, across the USA. Especially readable for those who are new to battling against the CCSS Machine.
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/10/31/weekend-news-those-ghouls-in-our-schools/

Here’s another article where I reveal yet financial institution meddling in USA education for purposed endorsement of all things related to Common Core! This article shows exactly how P3s (public private partnerships) ruin education in support of anything Common Core related.
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/10/27/ftf-measure-twice-cut-once/

This article is very detailed in its look at several national groups committed to targeting school personnel. From teachers, on up the ‘ladder’, if you weren’t aware these groups existed, this information is key to your state’s battle.
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/10/18/weekend-news-ccss-school-officials-alignment/

Common Core, STEM for Schools via the Export-Import Bank Re-authorization:

If you’ve followed my writing long, you know I’ve shown you how CCSS, CTE, STEM is embedded in legislation that supposedly has nothing to do with education at all, yet, we find pro CCSS programs somehow embedded in them. We saw it in the WIOA of 2014 (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act of 2014), and it’s there in the current E-IB (Export-Import Bank) re-authorization! If you missed this one, this is an important article!
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/10/29/tech-thursday-stemccss-push-making-it-american/

The Common Core’s “Career Tech Pledge”:

If you are new to fighting Common Core, you may not know that the Career Tech Education is an ‘adult version’ of the CC Standards. I’ve been able to provide evidence to support this since I first began blogging. However, this article is some of the latest information. It encompasses several states, including those states which chose to NOT adopt the CCSS (example: Texas). You’ll see many other states involvement in the “Pledge”, see what catchy names are being used to ‘hide in plain sight’ the CCSS/CTE alignment, and see how ‘action plans’ for special needs students, homeschool students play into the “Pledge”….and all in the name of ‘college career readiness’!
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/10/15/tech-thursday-career-readiness-pledge/

Closing:

As you can see, no educational choice is safe from the CCSS Machine, the more we can help others realize this, the more we can stand together AGAINST the Common Core State Standards Initiative (CCSSI)!

Monday Musings: “Rigor Walk”

Marzano strikes again!
Marzano strikes again!

Anti CC Warriors, have you heard of Dr. Marzano before? If you’ve been fighting Common Core long, his name, his institute should be very familiar. If not, here’s the link to my 3 previously published articles exposing his toxic grasp on education. See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/?s=marzano

Walking with Rigor:

As we’ve learned in the War Against the Core, we’ve come to know the CCSS Machine loves the word ‘rigor’. We’ve seen the anti CC Warriors, who’ve pointed out the true definition of the word ‘rigor’. Rigor denotes death, a stiffness that will not be broken. Nowhere in education should we see this kind of attitude with our students OR teachers.
Yet, time and time again, institutes like the one Marzano is in charge of, do just that..dream up and create MORE rigor for our education system! (The name of the institute is “Learning Sciences International”)

According to Marzano’s new “RigorWalk” system, taken directly from their website page, here are the ‘pillars of rigor’:

  • “School climate and culture
  • School leadership practices
  • Cultivation of a growth mindset
  • Professional Learning Communities
  • Rigorous, standards-based instruction
  • Formative assessment implementation”

How does Marzano carry this out in a practical way? On-site interviews; walking the halls of your schools, and data collection! To access the website page, http://www.learningsciences.com/solutions/rigorwalk/

Developers who are credited with creating this system? Dr. Betsy Carter and Dr. Jennifer Reeves (also of the Learning Sciences Institute) To see their biographies featured from a past Marzano Education Conference, http://www.cvent.com/events/building-expertise-2015/speakers-3c184adf9bfd44ca928c4089d245e0b9.aspx (*Note: Dr. Carter’s prior educational system involvement was in Ohio; Dr. Reeves’ was in Florida)

LSI has even provided a YouTube video about “RigorWalk”. It’s almost 1 hour.

Here are the biggest points we, as anti CCSS Warriors need to know:
a) The webinar had a very large audience (which means lots of interest, areas for application of what was covered)
b) About 2 minutes into the webinar, you’ll hear the speakers (Drs. Carter/Reeves) give their educational backgrounds (both state that they’d like schools to be better)
c) In their words, “RigorWalk” is a diagnostic tool which measures the amount of ‘rigor health’ your school has (or doesn’t have, but needs). Once a baseline ‘rigor health’ number is established, it’ll be easier to check the progression to the ideal amount of ‘rigor health’ is met.
d) Near the 3:45 minute mark, listen for their answer to the question of “Why rigor?” (Hint: jobs not yet created)
e) Not long after the question is “d” is asked you’ll hear  that rigor means ‘not specific content’, but ‘how to think’.
f) From the 4:50 minute mark to the 5:42 minute mark listen for the Learning Sciences International approach to creating MORE ‘rigor’ in your schools is. Disguised and ‘sold’ as student autonomy and cognitive complexity. The end goal? “Ready for the work world.”
g) From the 6:49 minute mark until the 7:49 minute mark, the topic of ‘why creating more rigor in schools is so needed NOW.
h) The 7:18 minute mark will reveal what Standards LSI is using, “College and Career Ready Standards” Why, ‘because everyone needs to improve in our schools’. You’ll need to refer to the below screen shot.
resourceyouneedi) The white paper referenced in the picture above: Sustaining-TLCs-20140829

Closing:

There’s much more ‘rigor’ in the rest of the presentation, but I want you to experience the You Tube video for yourselves. The bottom line is quite simply this (and the most important action point for us, the anti CCSS Warrior, to take away from all this:

LSI, “RigorWalk”, and all that’s associated with it, will target school leaders FIRST, then the students. School superintendents, district leaders, principals, and teachers.

FOM Friday: Best CCSS Fallacies

It's Friday, you know what that means! Time to measure what's truth, what's fallacy/fib or what's in between.
It’s Friday, you know what that means! Time to measure what’s truth, what’s fallacy/fib or what’s in between.

Think of today’s “Fib-o-Meter” as the collection of the biggest fallacies we’ve heard/seen/experienced about CCSS so far. Enjoy!

Aligned School Leaders:

So far, 3 articles about Common Core and superintendents! Not only do students get penalized by Common Core, or teachers, but superintendents are being held to the Standards as well. Given that many of our state level superintendents are pro Common Core, you’ll need to see the first one from Sept. 2014: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/09/19/fib-o-meter-friday-state-superintendents-common-core-standards/ Not only will you see the attempt to rebrand CC, you’ll get to see how. Follow that with the 2nd CC/Super article that was created via reader/follower requests. It’s from Sept. 2014 as well and features more switcheroo tactics as well as bold face lies! See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/09/26/fib-o-meter-friday-more-cc-aligned-superintendents/ The final CC/Super article from Oct. 2014, features Teach for America troops in addition to the final requested state superintendents. See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/10/03/fib-o-meter-friday-even-more-state-superintendents-common-core/ For research purposes, see how aligned each of these Supers are. More than likely they will still be just as CC discipled as before.

Related article:
School counselors are some of the best leaders in schools with access to not only faculty and students, but parents as well. Don’t think for a moment the CCSS Machine has missed the opportunity to ensure these counselors are selling the Career Pathways, Career Tech Education, and other CCSS related courses. While not a Fib-o-Meter Friday article, it WAS a Friday “Breaking News” post. See to what extent the federal overreach goes when it comes to the guidance students receive. See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/10/10/fridays-post-breaking-news-you-need-to-know/

The Fallacy About CCS and IB Schools:

Maybe your student doesn’t attend a traditional school. Maybe they attend an IB (International Baccalaureate) one. Think Common Core isn’t there? Oh, my friends..it is. In fact, because IB schools are rooted in the UN (United Nations), CC is certainly there. Think about it, the global citizen aspect so much in Common Core. UN and UN related organizations helped shape that. See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/11/14/fib-o-meter-friday-ib-international-baccalaureate-schools-common-core/

Fallacies About the Core Itself:

Lastly, for those new to the fight, you might find the fallacies of the Common Core interesting.
Originally written as a ‘see how much you know about the Core’ presentation for an audience, I shared in on the blog. There are many lies out there, would you know these? See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/09/12/fib-o-meter-friday-history-of-ccs/

In Jan. 2015, I wrote another FOM Friday about the lies of CC. See how many of these you know: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/01/16/fom-friday-update-truths-lies-of-ccss/

Got something related to Common Core you’d like to see run through the Fib-o-Meter? Let me know and I’ll do my best to research it. Thanks!

Fib-o-Meter Friday: Even More State Superintendents and Common Core!

It's Friday, you know what that means! Time to measure what's truth, what's fallacy/fib or what's in between.
It’s Friday, you know what that means! Time to measure what’s truth, what’s fallacy/fib or what’s in between.

This is the 3rd post for FOM Friday dedicated to you, my followers, who’ve requested a look at your state’s superintendents of education. I’m honored you continue to seek out my help in your quest for the truth. Today’s post has a look at 5 states. In alphabetical order: AZ, FL, LA, MS, NY.

Arizona’s John Huppenthal:

Currently, Mr. Huppenthal is serving as the top educational official in AZ, however, he recently lost a primary election to continue at the helm. Until the new person (who remains to be known) takes office, it’s pretty much business as usual. Since Mr. Huppenthal’s job is pretty much out of his hands, we’ll not look at too much of his truths/lies. Yes, he did lay the ground work, however, it will be the next person elected who will pick up the torch and either carry it on or put it out. However, before we look at the contenders, let’s look at some of the ‘legacy’ Mr. Huppenthal leaves behind: http://www.arizonadailyindependent.com/2014/08/12/huppenthal-sends-over-60000-teachers-a-campaign-emailvideo-in-possible-violation-of-law/

While in office, he actively supported the Common Core, yet on the campaign trail he didn’t. According to the website above, he did some other things that do not lead anyone to believe his words. If you missed the debate between Mr. Huppenthal and his opponent, Ms. Douglas, here’s the link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6Zr-q-ThXE  Mr. Huppenthal leaves office ‘Total fallacy’ rated.

The current race, Douglas vs. Garcia:

Ms. Douglas, thinks CCSS is”top-down government control of our education system.” ‘Total truth’! Race to the Top funding is the controlling arm the feds used to give us Common Core. Here’s her next statement, “The federal government has no role in local education whatsoever — they’re using our money to coerce us to do things.” Again, ‘total truth‘. More from the debate between she & Mr. Huppenthal has her sharing this quote, “It (CCSS) tells us what we must teach and how we must test our children, which will control curriculum. It tells us how we must evaluate and compensate our teachers. It tells us how we how we must grade our schools. And it has a data collection system on children that rival communist Chinese.” Now, I cannot speak to the comparison between countries (several searches have turned up very little), I can share this article about the data mining being intrusive from a user friendly viewpoint, http://www.corpwatch.org/article.php?id=15951 This article talks about global companies & the data they collect. As to the rest of Ms. Douglas’ comment, ‘total truth‘! We’ve seen many examples of curriculum with the copyrighted name/emblem. Her campaign website is under construction. Her challenger, David Garcia. Mr. Garcia is a professor with AZ State, a known Common Core supporter (see: https://education.asu.edu/resources/accrs), developer (see: http://commoncore.pearsoned.com/index.cfm?locator=PS22B1 Be sure to look at the section ‘outside resources’ and click ‘view’ when you see ASU, then notice how it takes you to UA). In Mr. Garcia’s short video for his campaign, he states, “There’s no excuse for our race to the bottom.” For this statement, I would say he is speaking ‘Total Truth‘. However, that’s where he stops.  I congratulate him on his former service to our country via the military & his honesty as a candidate. But that’s where my respect ends. Look at his words his from his website, “Let’s be clear, Common Core is not a federal curriculum but a set of more rigorous academic guidelines. Arizona has had standards for more than two decades. As a rule we should continually seek to improve our curriculum and advance our educational standards. The problem is not the standards but rather how we hold our schools, teachers and students accountable to those standards.” So disappointing, ‘Total Fallacy‘ on what Common Core is & isn’t. Oh, he’s all for more assessments, AP courses, STEM and CTE as well. (website: http://dg4az.com/issues/common-core/)

Florida’s Pam Stewart:

Well, knowing how instrumental education leaders and politicians from FL have been in not only Common Core, but PARCC as well, this commissioner is fairly transparent. Selected by the State Board of Education, Ms. Stewart is the current office holder in the ‘hot seat’. “Hot seat” is well deserved, as the position has been filled, vacated at least 5 times since 2011. See: (http://stateimpact.npr.org/florida/2013/09/17/state-board-picks-pam-stewart-as-education-commissioner/In her interview on “Florida Newsmakers”, she states that those Common Core Standards ARE more rigorous (trips over the phrase while speaking it) and will prepare students. “Total fallacy!” Another fallacious statement, “They (the CCSS) do that through teaching our students how to think critically, problem solve, and think analytically.” Sorry, I have to ask here, since when did ‘standards’ teach? I thought it was the teachers who taught! (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IbvgZ9lLKPI) Before the interview is over, Ms. Stewart shares that the first step needs to be public input when it comes to how to best serve students. That ‘Total Truth‘ is a few years too late! Had public input been taken BEFORE Common Core, we wouldn’t need a ‘Fib-o-Meter’! Ms. Stewart is also ‘fallacious’ for all her references to pro CC groups, assessments.

Louisiana:

Mr. John White, a former Teach for America alumni. Right off the bat, Common Core friendly! He’s been successful in helping NY get started on the Race/Top road, before heading south. Oh, I almost forgot, Mr. White was chosen to lead LA. Mr. White is also a member of the “Chiefs for Change” non profit group that adores the Core! (see: http://chiefsforchange.org/members-page/) The ‘love letter’ written by Mr. White is here: http://chiefsforchange.org/letter-from-supt-white-and-bese-president-chas-roemer-to-louisiana-educators/ My favorite ‘Total Fallacy‘ he stated, “Not only is continuing the state’s multi-year plan the right thing to do for our children, but also it is the legal path forward.” There are many other statements of Mr. White’s we could measure, but with his hand already exposed, we can easily see where his bets are placed. Mr. White should be in advertising, he’s doing a banner job in selling the CCSS!

Mississippi:

The current Superintendent, Dr. Carey Wright hasn’t been in office very long but she’s already come out swinging in the fight for Common Core Standards. Her predecessor, Dr. Tom Burnham was also pro Core. In fact, the U. S. Dept. of Education, considered him a courageous educator. Dr. Burnham helped usher in CC in MS, but it’s Dr. Wright who has promised to continue to usher the Standards in. Since one Doctor started this in MS and one is continuing to support the efforts, I thought a look at this statement by Dr. Burnham would be worth measuring, ” Common Core’s shift from “What’s Taught” to “What Students Need to Be Able to Do.” This initiative emphasizes that to be successful in the 21st century, college and career students should to be able to:
Solve problems, Communicate, Adapt to change, Work in teams, Analyze and conceptualize.”  Pardon me, Dr. Burnham, but qualified teachers CAN teach students ALL those things WITHOUT the CCSS! ‘Total Fallacy‘ Now, keeping this statement in mind, measure Dr. Wright’s, “I have said repeatedly across the state and I will say it to you. I fully support the Common Core State Standards. These are very rigorous standards that will better prepare students and your future employees. You need employees who can think critically, solve problems, work in teams and communicate well. That’s what you do each day, and that’s what Common Core is designed to help our students do.” The rest of her address is quite interesting. When I read it I wasn’t sure if I was in MS or TN. Dr. Wright gets extra ‘fallacy points’ for all the references to CCSS friendly groups.  ‘Total Fallacy’  See:  http://www.mde.k12.ms.us/state-superintendent-of-education

New York:

Our last state for today finds us in NY & measuring the current Commissioner, John King. He’s been in office since 2011. Before him, was David Steiner from 2009-11. We’ll get to Mr. Steiner in a minute, but look at the email Mr. King sent out not long ago: (http://myemail.constantcontact.com/News-and-Notes–Teaching-is-the-Core.html?soid=1110847617454&aid=l23enSVw_ZY ) He’s not only thrilled by CC, he’s announcing Social Studies is also aligned, “The Social Studies Framework has drawn support from social studies teachers, professional organizations, and other state and national education organizations. It includes key ideas and concepts for each grade level and incorporates Common Core skills in literacy, writing, speaking and listening, as well as social studies practices.” I’m giving Mr. King a ‘Total Fallacy‘ for this because we all know how well Math & English are preparing our kids, so I’m sure Social Studies will be wonderful, too! By the way, how does a person ‘practice Social Studies’?! From this archived video, Mr. King tells us there’s “no perfect plan to dramatically change standards.” (http://archive.lohud.com/VideoNetwork/3096793101001/Education-Commissioner-John-King-on-Common-Core) ‘Total Fallacy‘, Mr. King! By the way, count how many times he tells you 45 states did this. So, we know the current NY commissioner is a supporter (hey, remember the headlines of how WELL all those NY students fared on assessments?), let’s look for a moment at Mr. Steiner, who was in office when the Standards were adopted in NY. “How delighted I am to be with David Coleman and all of you.” He goes on to extol the great uniting wonder of Common Core. See: (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UeeT1_P1hAIWhile Mr. Steiner shows his alliance right off the bat, I will thank him for exposing the ‘triangle’ of CCSS in this video. So, he gets ‘Total Fallacy‘ for the Core & ‘Total Truth‘ for helping confirm what many have wondered…’just Standards’ or more?!

Closing:

Well, not one ‘neutral’ statement from any of the leaders in the 5 states we’ve looked at. Most of the leaders are very vocal in their support of Common Core. How sad. Well, we have work to do, fellow citizens..let’s do it!
