Consorting To Align And Undermine

Anti Fed Ed Warriors, we know the shift in education FROM academics TO workforce is NOT new.

We know the CCSS Machine sped things up in the streamlined ‘cradle to career’ shift via CC (Common Core), CTE (Career Tech Education, the ‘adult’ version for CC), STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and, Math), STEAM, (Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts, and, Math), CPs (Career Pathways), CCs (Career Clusters), CTs (Career or College Tracks), and, CCR (College and Career Readiness).

We also know that federal legislation has played directly into the cogs of the CCSS Machine via WIOA, Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act (2014), ESSA, Every Student Succeeds Act (2015), STEM Act of 2015, the re-authorization of Perkins Funding (which gives money to all 50 States for a big portion of everything you see in bold above.) We will certainly see it in the ‘new’ version of the HEA (Higher Education Act) as it continues to be ‘rewritten’.

What Consortium?

Warriors, were you aware there a national consortium expressly for boosting the continued shift from academics to workforce skills? “EntreEd” or the National Coalition for Entrepreneurship Schools.

Warriors, notice the K-12 inclusion, the community alignment, the local economic boosting potentials. What you don’t see is the use of the words ‘workforce’ or ‘career tech education’. “Entrepreneurship” is being used as an educratic replacement!

If you missed it, recently I shared with you federal legislation which, if passed into law, would increase business education tracks in schools and communities. (*Note: HR 1702, the Small Business Development Centers Improvement Act will be the Bill you are looking for in the linked article above.)

Yes, Warriors, you read correctly. More copyrighted education standards. EntreEd has a direct link to the National Entrepreneurship Standards, copyright 2004. While most of our academic standards in 2004 were not CCSS aligned, they have since been. Look below to see an overview of the 15 strands of this business education standards. (*Note: we’ll get back to these Standards in a moment.)

The MBA Research and Curriculum Center:

Warriors, MBA(Marketing and Business Administration) Research and Curriculum Center certainly carry the entrepreneurship beyond the 2nd year of college, but is this Center, associated with business, also in on the CCSS Machine, like the National Consortium for Entrepreneurship Education? Let’s find out.

Since there’s such a strong tie between businesses in education in the MBA Research and Curriculum Center, it’s not surprising to find there’s another Coalition contained among the MBA. It’s mission is crystal clear as to their allegiance to the CCSS Machine:
“Encourage the teaching of core business skills and economic concepts for college- and career-ready high school curricula.”

One of the ways this is carried out? PBL (Project Based Learning). Another? Extra-curricular clubs like FBLA (Future Business Leaders of America). (*Note: in my article , I show you how PBLs are ‘code’ for CBE, Competency Based Learning. CBE is an updated term for the Outcome Based Education from the 1990s. If you are not sure how the FBLA fits into the CCSS Machine, I have that laid out, here.)

Why This Should Matter:

Warriors, as the shift from academics to workforce continues, we’ll see more and more higher education institutions do away with what have traditionally been wonderfully accepted degrees for teachers and those leading our students. Majors in history, English, and, others are either declining OR are being phased out. For example, the University of WI at Stevens Point wants to do away with 13 majors.
Back in February 2018, the University of IL explained that cutting majors happens when budgets are cut. Their article also said it can be an effort to reduce student debt.

As we’ve seen, the CCSS Machine (via DC) has used ‘reducing student debt’ as a rhetorical reason for ramping up Competency Based Education. Warriors, it’s not so much about reducing debt (or taxpayer burdens). This type of rhetoric 100% supports the continued shift away from academics and plays right into the workforce training.

We also should consider that those in leadership for groups like the MBA and the EntreEd show up in other places. For example, the former leader of BOTH, MBA and EntreEd, will now lead NC in CTE (Career Tech Education) as its director.

Back in December 2017, I showed you what was coming for the Tar Heel State for Career Tech Education and how it would reach even younger students than ever before. No doubt the new CTE Director will make sure this happens…at taxpayer expense without taxpayer consent.

Warriors, who among your State education leaders used to be in another arm or leg of the CCSS Machine? Where are they now, do you know how they are continuing the workforce shift?

Closing:

While the CCSS Machine consorts and conspires against us? How will we, the Warriors, conspire and consort toward a counter-attack? Simply taking our students out of public education is not a real solution. Why? Because the cradle to career streamline will impact every single student at some point.

We must remember, ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) tightened the circle around all educational choices. Page 17 of the Law was deadly serious when it laid out the mandate for ALL education to be workforce readiness aligned! The goal of the CCSS Machine is to have NO choice, but a workforce training one, for every citizen and student.

Youth Envisioned

Anti CCSS/ESSA Warriors, in the past couple of weeks, I shared with you a look at Envision and how it is tied to the CCSS Machine. If you missed it, the article exposed how Act, Inc. is partnering with Envision in the name of globally workforce ready students. (See:

While researching the Envision entity, I uncovered a similarly named group. It appears that only the names are almost the same. So, today’s article will look at this other ‘Envision’ group which is designed for gifted students.

According to the Mind Vine Press website, the Envision tools you see in the picture begin in Grade 3, last one year, and are great for personalized learning. Remember the question above? I am most interested in how the ‘Career Aspiration’ connects to the CCSS Machine. We can get to how this connects to the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) in a bit.

What you WON’T see on Bondy’s work is a copyright from CCSS or CTE, BUT you do see the ties. You can see the support she gives the CCSS/CTE Machine!

Tying CTE to the ESSA:

Since it appears the overall goal of Envision for Gifted Students, is workforce (I mean career based) education, how DOES CTE fit in the ESSA?! Will gifted students be standardized just like all the other students via ESSA?!

For a quick answer, CTE is found in the ESSA under a few different phrases. For example, ‘post-secondary readiness’. CTE is also woven into the WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act). WIOA is specifically named in the ESSA multiple times.

A bit more in-depth answer is that while CTE (is also called Career Pathways, Career Clusters) is in the ESSA under other phrases (in addition to CTE), the post-secondary readiness (PSR) factors includes ALL students AND all teachers. Students must learn to be PSR AND teachers MUST teach everything to PSR factors. Who is deciding those factors? Supposedly the States, but look at the current Proposed U.S. Dept. of Ed ESSA Regulations where PSR is among the mandates. If you look closely at the Proposals, you can see other CCSS Machine member groups as cited in research/evidence sources for justifying these proposed measures.

We also need to consider that Career Pathways (another one of the CTE names) is embedded in WIOA (2014) at least 21 different times..again, interchanging phrases! We also need to remember that the HEA (Higher Education Act) is full of ALL of this as well!

Closing:

Warriors, we need to know that there are many large pro CCSS/ESSA groups AS WELL as some smaller groups. We need to know how they are carrying on the ESSA, CCSS reform, AS WELL as the push to continue shifting education to Career-based NOT traditional based.
We need to continue to hold accountable ANY person, group, or company in education or ANYTHING connected IN any WAY to education! Why? ESSA will level and standardize every student (young, old, rich, poor, gifted, special needs, private educated, homeschooled or not).

ESSA will go down as one of the greatest bridges in the educational reform. Why? It bridges birth to K and higher ed for a streamlined workforce full of competency based quasi-education. One of the worst parts in all this? Companies (big or small), speakers (well known or not-so-much) are making lots of money while seemingly pedaling student supportive educational materials.

Anti CCSS Warriors, another work week is upon us. Another week to fight against the agenda behind the CCSS Initiative. We know part of the agenda is NOT a true academic education, but a workforce based, globally minded, and career ready citizen who will be an economic ‘positive’. I’ve written much on the topic. Our students, regardless of the their age are being described as ‘human capital’, ‘talent supply’, and other disgusting phrases. We can now add the dishonorable ‘globally ready’ to this list, at least in NC. But are there other states already willing to sell out their schools? You bet!

I invite you to enlarge the above screen shot. This is no joke for NC, but it’s a foolish move for the state, nonetheless. Why? Because instead of the state receiving LESS CCSS, it is continuing to LOCK CCSS into the schools!!
Here’s a quote from the page above, “In September 2011, the North Carolina State Board of Education (SBE) formed a Task Force on Global Education to assess the state’s effort to produce “globally competitive” graduates ready to live, work, and contribute in an interconnected world.” The Task Force found 6 major goals and committed to 5 of them. What are they? I’m so glad you asked! Below you’ll find the 6 goals in plain language, not the tricky double speak so often used in CCSS supportive dribble.

1) prepare students for global readiness
2) use LEAs (Local Educational Agencies) to co-ordinate and align for global readiness
3) prepare and align teachers for global readiness
4) stress global language and culture
5)  involve as many P3 (public private partnerships) to get in the ‘global push’ as possible
6) hone a sustainable, global competitive edge in communities

The 5 commitments? Again, in plain language, not pro CCSS rhetoric!
1) embedded global themes, more PBLs (problem or project based learning), and groom teachers for more globalness, not less
2) partner with HLIs (Higher Learning Institutions) for more to increase the supply of global ready teachers
3) transform schools into ‘new schools’ with the help of non-education related entities
4) expand the ‘global ready’ push to more NC school districts
5) work directly with the NC Dept. of Commerce and other external partners

Okay, that’s just the summary above, but what was in the 2013 Full Report?? Read on, anti CCSS Warriors, but have a ‘barf bag’ close by, you’ll probably feel your stomach begin to revolt! Oh, and I’m leaving it in their words this time. With moves like these in our states, we know LOCKING in more CCSS/CCR/CTE is a reality, not a questioned possibility. If our leaders are saying ‘no’ to CCSS, but ‘yes’ to ANY of the above, we must hold them accountable!

Sic’ ‘Em Saturday: CCSS Rewind

Thanks to my wonderful family and friends, this anti CCSS warrior was able to have a week’s respite from not only fighting Common Core, but my other full-time task of caregiver. So, was I able to do anything for fighting CCSS while I was away? Yes! I’ll be happy to announce just what I was up to when it is published!! (Hint: that’s a big clue for you). Behavior Standards:

As we’ve seen and heard in the news, how our students behave emotionally via CCSS is an alarming component. Just last week, I shared with you a true account of a student facing too many projects in her school day. “Carol” isn’t alone. Much of CCSS depends on ‘Project Based Learning’. As you know, I’ve taken on all kinds of angles to researching Common Core’s presence in every educational realm. This includes not only traditional schools, but private ones, homeschools, post-secondary education, charters, and  IB Schools (International Baccalaureate). I’d like to share a first hand student’s account of the experience in an IB school. But first,  a bit of background for you.

1)” ‘IB Schools’ were created in 1968 and are a UNESCO partner. Alec Peterson is the person who founded the IBO, International Baccalaureate Organization.”

2) ” ‘IB schools’ are also tied to Aga Khan Academy Development Network, FL Virtual Public Schools. The USA was ‘saddled’ with ‘IB schools’ thanks, in part to the Reinvestment Act and with Race to the Top funding. ‘IB schools’ mission isn’t American, it’s global. From their mission statement, “At our heart we are motivated by a mission to create a better world through education.”  From their history page: “…consisted of a common pre-university curriculum and a common set of external examinations for students in schools throughout the world, seeking to provide students with a truly international education..”  ”

The Conversation:

Now that you have the context, here’s the setting of the conversation.
Setting: giving one of my daughter’s friends a ride in the car from her school to the local community theater. (This particular theater uses ‘theatre’ as part of its title)
The people involved: “Carol” and myself.  “Carol”  is someone I’ve met recently, so there’s not a long history between us.  Being a mom, I’m used to asking how either my children or any of their friends questions like ‘How was school today?’. Call me an involved parent. After this initial question, it is usually not long before a natural conversation ensues. This was most certainly the case during this 20 minute drive. “Carol” responded to how her day went with ‘it was okay’. Knowing “Carol” was going to be at my home for the next few days, I asked if there was a tremendous amount of homework involved. This is when “Carol” stated that yes, there was a sizable amount because her school is an IB School. Now, not knowing how much about myself, my daughter has shared with her friend, I certainly wasn’t going to announce “I’m a research nut on all things Common Core, so let me pepper you with questions, see your textbooks, etc.” For this conversation, I simply wanted to see if any tidbits that are relevant to my research emerged…and yes, there were a couple of tidbits “Carol” gave me.

The Tidbits:

“Almost all my homework is a project. I have an English project, a math project, and an art project. In science our project is ________________________.”

“The art project is set to the IB’s parameters, not my parameters of creating what I see and wish to capture.” To clarify this, I asked, “So, you don’t get to paint or express artwork that’s your own, it must be the curricula’s?” Her answer, “Yes, it so awful. I want to learn the concepts of art, not be told what to draw!”

“I must do not only all this, but I’m performing in a show next week, and i have to find time to perform my community service hours.” As having researched IB schools, I know that at least one year of the upper classes (meaning 10th-12th) are required to complete 1 year of community service. So, knowing this, I said, “Yes, that’s right, as an IB student you must do that.” “Carol’s” reply, “I hate my school. I don’t want to have to serve, I want to be free to choose.” 

“Because my last school was a charter school and I have AP courses, the IB school won’t give me credit, so I’m having to retake courses I’ve already passed, just so I can get them to match up with the IB’s system.”

“Our big end of year test is coming up in May and I must study to be able to pass that and make a good grade.” 

Other tidbits “Carol” gave me were the buzzwords we’ve come to know in fighting CCSS in education. She literally used (on her own) the phrases “my path”; “my track for life”; “lining up my education for my life.”; “I must get everything together to earn that diploma.”Just so you know, “Carol” is only 15 years old.

What I was able to find out about her IB School:

Parents are encouraged to join the IB Parent Action Council for more partnering in a student’s life.

Students are required to complete “Personal Projects” over their summers. Here’s the excerpt from a 10th grade 2014 assignment.
“10th Grade IB: The Personal Project
Over the summer being thinking about your IB Personal Project! The Personal Project is a significant and long-term body of work that grows out of your interests, initiative, and creativity. It will last ALL YEAR and is the capstone of the Middle Years Program. For many of you–hopefully most!–it is the bridge into the Diploma Program.”

From an 11th grade IB Psychological Summer Person Project, students were to choose one book from a book list of 7 books. The subjects were varied, but they are books I wouldn’t think suitable. Here’s the one book I know as a CCSS Warrior, you’ll cringe over:

Opening Skinner’s Box: Great Psychological Experiments of the Twentieth Century
by Lauren Slater

As a student (from primary years and up), you must have an IB Learner Profile. Here’s the official description of why every student needs to be profiled, “The aim of all IB programmes is to develop internationally minded people who, recognizing their common humanity and shared guardianship of the planet, help to create a better and more peaceful world.” To access the entire profile: learner_profile_en (Note, if you see several blank pages, it is more than likely that information has been removed) From the IBO’s information, the obvious is ‘internationally minded’ citizens.
