Oh, Community..

Anti Fed Ed Warriors,

How many times have we seen the CCSS Machine invite us to a place at the community table for education? It’s been many times, right? How many of those times have we seen the Delphi method used? (Delphi methods invite people in to have a discussion and then drive the discussion to predetermined results which has nothing to do with the people’s input.)

We’ve seen this tactic repeatedly used against us, Warriors. It stinks. Thanks to ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) and its mandates for MORE federal control in education, the Delphi method was launched in every ‘stakeholder’ meeting; every ESSA forum for ideas and suggestions; and, it was pulled off right under our noses.

To add insult to injury, NOW, the States are rolling out all kinds of meetings across their boundaries. These meetings are a continued effort to attract (under false pretenses) community citizens to become involved in ‘local’ education.

The example? Why, NC (North Carolina), of course. Warriors, you know it’s where I live. You also know, from a few articles ago, the State education, business, and, political leaders are rolling out the CCSS Machine bandwagon fallacies.

The leaders want SO much for NC to be a national leader of ‘local education’. Yet, look behind the facade and you’ll see the same egregiousness here, that is happening THERE (wherever you live).

To be more specific about the latest NC example of CCSS Machine education alignment, think ‘innovation’. As in ‘districts of innovation’. As in, piling on more technology, digital learning, and the data mining which goes with it. (*Note, back in 2016, I published this article about the NC ties to other States and some of their ‘districts of innovation’. Scroll down to “Part 2”.)

Before I get to the latest innovation news, let me give you some background and context.

datagaps

The State Data Gets You Every Time:

Many NC leaders, especially some high profile elected officials (like Lt. Gov. Dan Forrest), have been pushing for the past few years to have MORE digital programs and technology and more band-width internet connections in EVERY classroom across our State. (*Note: the ‘connections’ article will show you Forrest is also on the ‘school choice’ bandwagon for CCSS.)

Forrest is currently gearing up for a run as the next NC Governor. Forrest also sits on the NC SBE (State Board of Education) and has signed at least one resolution damning our students across the State to MORE CCSS aligned CTE (Career Tech Education), because, after all, jobs in NC will make our State excel above others. His initiative for 1 technology device for every single student is also a death knell in education.

How? A computer in every student’s hands will some how many education even better. Yep, and let’s recall the plethora of articles proving how damaging too much computer access, time, and, education is literally sucking the life out of students.

All this technology  is tied to STEM (which is part of the UN, United Nations, education agenda). STEM is Science, Technology, Engineering, and, Math. The data mining which accompanies all this technology will make millions of dollars for the members and their organizations of the CCSS Machine.

More Background/Context Related Resources:
From 2016, after ESSA became law, a look at the NC digital shift and State law which supports and promotes this activity in education.

From 2015, the ‘new’ digital upgrades NC got which most definitely set the trap for data mining in all school choices from Pre-K to adult, using technology and CTE for jobs and the economic health of the State.

From 2014, the NC Community College System, the (former) Governor of NC, McCrory, and business leaders sell out higher education for alignment to workforce based learning. (*Notes: McCrory (a conservative Republican) was Forrest’s former boss.
The current Governor of NC, Cooper (a liberal Democrat) has done zero to unhinge NC from the federal overreaches in education, the alignment of cradle to career tracking systems, and everything which connects these.
Serving as Lt. Governor alongside BOTH these Governors, Forrest has NOT bucked the educational alignment system either.)

The Latest Delphi Method/Innovation For NC:

Warriors, the latest innovation push is called the “Connecting Communities of Education Stakeholders (CCES)” Conference.  Below is a screen shot of the topic strands for ‘innovation’:

nccces18
The Conference was announced on the NC DPI (Dept. of Public Instruction). The official title of the Community Conference is “Fostering Innovation Across Our State”.
The vision for all this updating in education? Warriors, you’ll ‘love’ it! According to the website page for the Conference, the coming together of all the ‘stakeholders’ for innovation’s sake, “builds capacity for continued growth and success for all learners.”

Among the goals for the Conference is ‘data-driven’ strategies and resources’.

Found in the 84 page Conference Guide, beginning March 12th, 2018, the opening breakout sessions will give teachers data gathering tools to use as they walk about their classrooms. How compliance from students will be turned into ‘engagement’, and, digital classes for coding on-line and reading for little ones. That’s just for the students. For the teachers there is digital badging in competency driven PD (professional development). For the parents? How to use Twitter for your school.

Warriors, those are just the first few breakouts. Do you see what kind of tactic is being used? While each breakout says the target audiences include parents, I wonder how many parents who can afford this Conference (about $250.00 per person), will be able to attend the breakouts where they are not mentioned in the descriptions? If they are allowed, how many will be ‘delphi-ed’?

You’ll want to scroll through the Guide to find out what other data mining, and ‘innovation’ can be found. Look for assessments, districts for innovation, any company specified. (For example, I saw PowerSchool mentioned quite a few times) You’ll also want to look for globalization of your classes, shared business and school fiscal ventures.

Closing:

Warriors, ‘innovation’ is a code word, I do believe. What’s it code for? Anything the CCSS Machine needs to happen in education can fit under ‘innovation’ and be found acceptable. The CCSS Machine needs more data to mine, track, and sell.
Easy, label a program or initiative with ‘innovation’ and presto-bingo! People buy into it. We’re being delphi-ed to death, Warriors! Our kids are being data raped every day in the name of ‘innovation’. Look at the levels of compliance, too.

A leader needs to look good so that more people will support their agendas. Easy, pop in the word ‘innovation’ or use it in connection with ’21st Century education’, and watch the support pour in!

The federal government wants to maintain its compliance with the United Nations and their global grasp on education for workforce needs. Easy, write ‘innovation’ into a piece of legislation and watch how quickly it becomes a law. Laws, which by their very existence render their illegal based overreaches as ‘treason’.  When it comes to education, we are no longer a United States of America, Warriors. We’ve become the United State of Delphi.

Credentialed Transcripts?

cementblock
The modern education transformation is treating our students like blocks of ‘stackable credentials’, not humans!

‘Tech Thursday’ is the day I usually focus on the overreach in education to the post-secondary level. Today is no exception. If you have followed me for a while, you know I have consistently laid out the evidence and resources so you can follow the CCSS Machine’s march from high school and beyond.

So what can I share with you today?  A look inside the transcripts-turned-credentials for our students under the guise of quality education.

Parchment Transcript Services (PTS):

I first heard of PTS, from a dedicated anti CCSS Warrior who is doing much work to protect student data. We know how much is collected, shared, sold, and used against our students, so naturally finding a school (or State) which uses PTS is worth knowing more about.
The website: http://www.parchment.com/
The advertised mission: “Parchment’s mission is to turn credentials into opportunities.  We help learners, educators, associations and employers securely send and receive education credentials online, in simple and insightful ways.”
The zippy 2 minute sales pitch:

Did you notice how hidden in plain sight the data mining is? Did you see who shares it, has access to it? Did you notice the use of the fallacy tactic known as ‘Bandwagon’? (bandwagon is where you are enticing to do what everyone else is doing so you don’t miss out) Something tells me there is much more to find out about!

The Folks in Charge:

CEO, Dr. Matthew Pittinsky is certainly connected to the CCSS Machine. How can I know this before we even go any further? Two clues: Blackboard and ASU (AZ State University) I have written before about both. To see what else he is doing connected to the transformation of post-secondary education: http://www.parchment.com/matthew-pittinsky/
(*Note: his short video reveals how he feels about data mining.)

Other Leading members include former members of other CCSS Machine member organizations, like Learn.com; there are other former Blackboard personnel; non-profit education advocacy; former military; Honeywell; ISU (Iowa State University); and global education IT (information technology.)
To find out more: http://www.parchment.com/leadership/ (*Note: be sure to check out the Board of Directors. You will find even more ties to the CCSS Machine.)

Parchment Partners:

Since Parchment deals with student data, we need to know who they work with in the sharing. Two of the biggest CCSS Machine members which jumped of the page? Herff Jones and Pearson Power School! There are others, as well. See all the partners:
http://www.parchment.com/partners-and-associations/

While Pearson’s membership in the CCSS Machine is known extensively, I will share with you how Herff Jones is also a member.

Most folks think of high school class rings and high school yearbooks when they hear Herff Jones, but the company is more embedded than you know. See:
http://www.socialstudies.com/pdf/CommonCore_SS.pdf (look for footnotes #5, 8, and 9)
Related is my in-depth look at the C3 Social Studies where you will see CCSS, post-secondary CCSS, and global agenda intersect:
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/11/09/rtm-sunday-common-core-and-civics/

From the  Herff Jones yearbook information, this excerpt, “It’s easy to see how yearbook aligns with the Common Core’s emphasis on research, reflection and revision, and the four C’s touted by the Partnership for 21st Century Skills (critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity) are naturally a part of the yearbook process. Talk about cross-disciplinary learning!”

How the Service Works on a Local Level:

From the parent of a Senior (Class of 2016), this personal account. “Seniors are required to state what college or university they will attend. All final transcripts will be sent electronically through Parchment. You must sign up via their website before graduation. After graduation, you will be charged $8.50 per transcript. My student must contact their Career Center Counselor/Office for more information.” This parent goes on to share that the Parchment presence in school is a school district promoted decision. Supposedly the only data collected isn’t too personal, but we Warriors know ANY data about our students is up for grabs! Parchment’s service also has you answer on-line questions for specific schools you might want to attend to see IF you can become a qualified applicant.

What I found out about the transcripts is that each is given a unique code (DID or Document Identity Number). For students to access or verify if their information has been transmitted or received, they must use that DID. Hmm.. think UID (Unique Identifier Number) currently used for all those assessments your students think. We have evidence how ‘secure’ those are! If you would like to know, Parchment stands by the FERPA policies (again, we know how FERPA was weakened to allow MORE data mining!) Check out all their related topics:
 http://support.parchment.com/link/portal/30029/30032/ArticleFolder/171/FERPA-security-privacy

Parchment’s latest Press Release shares more about the data collection/sharing. This particular Release details the State of Georgia’s partnership:
Parchment, a leading academic credential management service, works with more than 65 high schools and 72 college admissions offices across Georgia to create a robust network that helps to simplify the college application process for Georgia learners. By delivering and processing electronic credentials with Parchment, member schools are breaking down barriers in the college access process. For more than a decade, Parchment has worked with high schools and colleges across the United States to aid in the application process, making academic credentials, like high school transcripts, digital, often resulting in more timely admissions decisions. Schools in Georgia have already begun to improve efficiencies, provide transparency to learners and reduce overall costs by partnering with Parchment, following the success many other states have long used to their advantage. In 2015, Georgia high schools relied on Parchment to exchange more than 41,000 digital credentials, an increase of 48 percent over the previous year. Parchment has enabled our students and parents to expedite the college application process by sending transcripts electronically to almost any school across the nation,” said Tessa Barbazon, Coordinator, Office of School Counseling with Fulton County School District. “In addition, the tracking tools available to students through Parchment fill a gap in communication that can exist when less advanced services are utilized.” The Fulton County School District is comprised of 18 high schools with 94,000 students.” (see the entire Press Release: http://www.parchment.com/press-releases/parchment-provides-georgia-students-with-improved-college-access/)

To read Parchment’s Privacy Policy, see: http://www.parchment.com/privacy-policy/
While all looks secure, there are a few things to note:
1) Parchment sends you information they think you want based on how you answered those qualifying questions.
2) Data is shared with ANY partner or group designated as an Academic Institution. While this may look like it means schools, remember the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) and the current version of the HEA (Higher Education Act) include the academic institutions in a much broader context. (*Note: the current HEA even embeds the use of Digital Promise as the  data collection method on all students. Also, the ESSA has Digital Promise funding INCREASED embedded in the language.)
3) Note the Asset Transfer clause. Even your parents information about finances is up for all to see (or at least whomever Parchment deems worthy of knowing.)

 Closing:

I thank the parent who shared their story. Our anti CCSS War Against the Core, is made so much stronger when these brave men and women speak up. I hope this information has caused you to question much when it comes to the transformed high school to post-secondary school state we find ourselves in. While we must champion our students data (and ours as well). we must investigate every company we can. Since it appears the school districts are promoting and choosing this, make sure you let your district know your concerns!

Monday Musings: Learning for Whom?!

Have you heard of this group? They've got your school's data.
Have you heard of this group? They’ve got your school’s data.

We all know that the CCSS Machine is sparing no expense to grab onto our student’s personal information, today’s post will highlight this particular company’s foray into the educational world.

What “Learn Sprout’s” All About:

According to their website, they are here to help us all with school data. That’s one thing because, in these times, data is rather abundant. Where we anti CCSS warriors are concerned is HOW that data is used; whom it is sold to or shared with; and other CCSS bonuses gained from possession of sensitive facts. If you look at the mission statement it seems fairly harmless, but we’ll be looking further into the company than simply its mission statement. “Our mission is to help K-12 educators use data to understand the past, analyze the present, and anticipate the future.”  Okay, not too informative, but its what companies and advisors “Learn Sprout” relies on that is the bigger concern to me as an anti Common Core warrior. For example, one of “Learn Sprout’s” is “Power School” as in Pearson Publishing’s data miner. Another “Code for America”. I’ve written quite a bit about the ties to coding (computer programming) and Common Core. Here’s the link for all those articles: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/?s=coding

“Code for America”:

So, in a nutshell can I tell you what “Code for America” is? Sure, I can! For instance, their 2011 Annual Report tagged the effort as ‘a new kind of public service’. If you look very closely at the report, you’ll begin to notice just how data is being harvested, where it’s been used, and what organizations are funding this. Common Core supporters such as “Google”, “Microsoft”, and the “Rockerfeller Foundation”, among others. Back in 2013, “Watchdog Wire” reported how the data mining, Common Core, and foundations such as Rockerfeller’s (and others) are making huge bucks off our kid’s data. See: http://watchdogwire.com/florida/2013/08/08/data-mining-using-common-core-cha-ching-cha-ching/ To access “Code for America’s” report: http://www.codeforamerica.org/2011-annual-report/2011_CfA_Report.pdf

While this may not sound so bad, consider this: one of the 5 kingpin agenda items for “CfA” is ‘changing people and practices’. See the screen shot below:

Find out more: http://2014.codeforamerica.org/
Find out more:
http://2014.codeforamerica.org/

Back to “Learn Sprout”:

On the website (https://www.learnsprout.com/ews) you’ll find the false argument for ‘closing the skills gap’ that’s been so overused by the CCSS Machine. You’ll see how “LS” has an ‘early warning system” available for use in regards to the skills gap.
Excuse me, are we discussing students or weather systems here? I don’t need an early warning system for my school, I need care and concern for my students. Early warnings are more suited for impending weather emergencies and the like, but NOT people!! (*Note: Many researchers and/or publications have presented all kinds of evidence about the “skills gap”. If you conduct an internet search, you’ll find several credible articles which state those seeking to reform education have skewed the information to create a big mess. Business say education is to blame for the not-skilled-enough-workers; education counters with not-enough-jobs. It’s a mess.In the meantime, we, the warriors can easily get side-tracked about skills OR no skills..all the while the CCSS Machine churns on with its P3, public-private partnership overreach into our students lives. We MUST not be swayed!) You’ll also find the “College Readiness” can be at your disposal with the company. (see: https://www.learnsprout.com/product) The “CR” will take your student’s data and turns it into action items for their future. Wow…that’s a comfort for us as parents, isn’t it? NOT! My child’s performance data on assessments, etc.  shouldn’t be used against them! While the site claims to have honorable intentions, I can’t trust that when I know Pearson and others supporting CCSS are somehow involved. Their track records speak another message to me. As far as the student data, the LS company has a ‘snazzy video’ about transparency, but again, consider what companies LS partners with. Companies known to abuse student data. Here’s their video clip:

Notice, that throughout this website and all I’ve presented so far, you’ve not seen or heard Common Core. However, I’ve shown you ways in which LS is tied to CCSS. I’m not done yet……

Those 21st Century Tones:

Having researched so much about all that’s connected to CCSS, the undertones of so much 21st Century agenda got me a bit curious. Could Learn Sprout be a part of the P21 movement? Wait, what’s the P21? Oh, great question! P21 is short for “Partnership for 21st Century Skills”. I’ve written quite a few articles about just HOW P21 is devoted to Common Core. Here’s the link  to each of the articles: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/?s=p21 (*Note: you’ll really want to take the time to read each of these as there are many of the same ‘players’ in P21 as Code for America and/or Learning Sprouts). If you want to see which companies have aligned themselves to P21:
“Adobe Systems, Inc., American Association of School Librarians, Apple Inc., Cable in the Classroom, Cengage Learning, Cisco Systems, Inc., The College Board’s Advanced Placement Program (AP), Crayola, Dell, Inc., EdLeader21, EF Education, Education Networks of America, Ford Motor Company Fund, GlobalScholar, Goddard Systems Inc., Hewlett Packard, Intel Corporation, Knovation, KnowledgeWorks Foundation, LEGO Group, Mosaica Education, National Academy Foundation, National Education Association, Pearson, Project Management Institute Educational Foundation, The Walt Disney Company, Wireless Generation, Verizon Foundation, and VIF International Education.” (To see the article from which this excerpt is from {details how P21 is behind Next Generation Science Standards},

FOM: The CCSSO’s Hungry Eyes

This is a special Fib-o-Meter Friday for those of us opposed to Common Core Standards and all that goes with them. Come along with me as we look at the truths, fallacies, and other mutterings from the Council of Chief State School Officers from this past week’s gathering.

It's Friday, you know what that means! Time to measure what's truth, what's fallacy/fib or what's in between.
It’s Friday, you know what that means! Time to measure what’s truth, what’s fallacy/fib or what’s in between.

Set Your Minds:

In order to frame this article in the proper context, I would ask that you try to remember an 80s song called “Hungry Eyes” by Eric Carmen. There’s one line that suits the CCSSO’s grasp on not only American Education, but our entire American set of values, ways of life, and how we live them.

“You’re mine tonight. Now I’ve got you in my sights.”

The Evidence:

Fib-o-Meter’s first set of evidence for the CCSSO’s power grab will be for the children. See the screen shot below:

While your kids may be in their sights, WE are watching them!
While your kids may be in their sights, WE are watching them!

Yes, warriors, it’s “Total Truth”, at least in their plans to have our kids achieving the ‘collective good’. What other evidence can we find to support this? Let’s see….from the CCSSO President Dr. June Atkinson’s prepared remarks in her address to her underlings in the CCSSO, the following excerpt, “In North Carolina, for example, we have a statewide technology platform called Home Base. This comprehensive technology system incorporates student information, a parent portal, instructional improvement, educator evaluation and professional development tools all in one place.” Yes, it’s the “Total Truth” that “Home Base” is in use. BUT, what wasn’t shared was the fact that Pearson Publishing runs the platform. So, all that student data gets mined through Home Base! Data that is VERY private about NC’s students! Data that goes to a wide variety of ‘customers’.
If you’d like to see my article on NC’s Governor’s Teacher Network (which goes into more detail about “Home Base”, as well as CCSSO’s tie to the companies behind it, see: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/02/04/wybi-the-gtn-of-north-carolina/)

Need a bit more evidence? May I offer the following: Pearson’s ‘Power School’ which is a portion of the “Home Base”, has turned out to be a resounding dud in NC, but that “Total Truth” wasn’t mentioned in the CCSSO address. To get the rest of THAT story, see: http://ladyliberty1885.com/2014/11/11/pearsons-powerschool-redefines-epic-fail-in-nc/. Be sure to access her links in the article. There are first person accounts of just how far the data trail goes.
If you want to see how “Home Base” and “Power School” are connected, see: homebasepresentation

If you’d like to see the CCSSO’s real agenda for your students, be sure to check out their priorities as tied into HR5 (Student Success Act or the re-authorization of ESEA). First on the list: assessments! See: ESEAKeyProvisions

Fib-o-Meter’s Second Bit of Evidence:

This, also from the prepared statements of Dr. Atkinson, “Speaking of progress, it is important note that for the first time in our nation’s history, we have a shared set of rigorous and relevant learning standards.” Now, she does go on to explain the exceptions to the statement (like a few states have since decided to use other standards, some elected to NOT use CCSS in the first place). “Total Fallacy”, President Dr. Atkinson! Research has proven the CCSS is NOT rigorous, students are bearing out the fact the Standards aren’t even relevant! Good grief. Interestingly enough however, see what showed up on Twitter that shows you how the Chief of the Chiefs really feels! See the screen shot:

ANDTo see the rest of the prepared statements so you can do your own “fact checking”, http://www.ccsso.org/Documents/2015/FINAL_SOS-1.pdf

To see the Tweets connected to the CCSSO Legislative Session, which cover the push for re-authorizing the ESEA (HR5, or Student Success Act) to meeting with Congress, Sec. Duncan, and more drama than a bad soap opera, use the “CCSSOLeg” handle next time you log on to Twitter.

Fib-o-Meter’s Third Item for Today:

Grabbing and shaping the leaders is also a big part of the CCSSO’s hunger. What do I mean? I found a 2012 document of a 3 prong, pro-CCSS task force where the findings are to be used from the SEAs (State Education Agent) level all the way to the LEAs (Local Education Agent)! The 3 prong force? That’s easy. The CCSSO, the NGA (remember, both own one half each of the CCSS) and the NASBE (National Association of State Boards of Education). I recently wrote about NASBE and just how sold out to CCSS they are. Gates Foundation funding has helped them further align their design for education. See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/02/14/sic-em-saturday-do-you-know-nasbe/

As far as the SEAs and LEAs, I’m including the entire Task Force Report for your research. Suffice it to say CCSSO believes it is their ‘responsibility and promise’ to ensure EVERY student is college/career ready AND that those teaching will be in total alignment with the process. See their report: Our Responsibility Our Promise_2012. For the CCSSO to assume every student’s future is their responsibility/promise is “Total Fallacy”. How presumptuous can one organization be?!

Before we move on, I did find one interesting document from the CCSSO archives from 2006 about the SEAs/LEAs role in controlling  assessment data. Now, while I know systems have been updated, the document has a 5 year plan, which means 2011. About the time CCSS hit us. Various states and what works best for them are highlighted, data flow systems are described, and more. If you want a good idea of the recent past in your states education assessment tracking, this is a good resource. See: http://www.ccsso.org/Documents/2006/Validity_Threats_Detection_2006.pdf (*NOTE: the CCSSO has an entire collection of resources to increase SEAs/LEAs via more of them and how they are to operate. For example AND still being offered as a great resource on their website is the 2010 SCEL (State Consortium on Education Leadership; a part of CCSSO) report about increasing district leadership. Included is partnering with others to increase effectiveness. See: SCEL_Draft_Toolkit_2010)

The Collective Aspect of CCSSO’s Hunger:

Lastly, the Fib-o-Meter offers you the “Total Truth” of how vested CCSSO is in ‘collective’/’greater good’, etc.
Look at their partners, their joint projects. The most telling example is with “Knowledge Works”. As I’ve shared with you before the the ‘community cradle to career’ movement is not only strong, but already growing across America. Totally social minded in that the community must be ‘all in’. Totally aligned with the agenda of CCSSO’s ‘responsibility/promise’ rhetoric. If you’ve not seen the CCSSO partner page, you really should. http://www.ccsso.org/Who_We_Are/Business_and_Industry_Partnerships/Corporate_Partners.html

Fib-o-Meter gives you a bonus “Total Truth” for the CCSSO’s collective, aligned, maligned, college/career ready CCSS. To date the Gates Foundation has granted the CCSSO $90,789,605.00!! Including the development of CCSS curriculum which is available through Common Core, Inc.! See all 22 grants, http://www.gatesfoundation.org/How-We-Work/Quick-Links/Grants-Database#q/k=CCSSO

A Personal Note:

As many of you may know, I am a full time care taker to my mom since her diagnosis with a terminal disease earlier this year. That said, my Diva family and I will be gathering this weekend to celebrate her birthday. I am looking forward to joining my warrior family (that’s you) back on Monday, March 30th.
