Affording CCSS Higher Ed Reform

NCSB873
For this Weekend News article, I want to help shine the light on the CCSS Machine in higher education..specifically in the name of college/post-secondary affordability. Who is involved? How does this connect to the CCSS Machine?

Above, you see a screen shot of the NC Senate Bill 873. Its short title is the ‘Access to Affordable College Ed Act’. Since you, my fellow  anti CCSS Warriors may NOT live in NC, what will your State have in the works for higher education reform where saving money is a selling point?

If you have heard any of my more recent interviews, you may recall I have shared that one of the ways in which we, the citizens of the USA, will be taken in by the CCSS Machine’s higher education grasp is through the affordable cost of post-secondary education. Look closely at the above screen shot and you will see the easily identifiable Common Core Machine ties. But trust me, there are MANY more not in black and white print.

However, before we get to a State level look, let’s review what the federal level of the CCSS Machine’s education overreach in the name of savings for post-secondary education.

The Feds in Post-Secondary Education:

In Feb. 2016, I shared with you the intent Dr. John King (U.S. Dept. of Ed’s Secretary) and the OPE (Office of Post-Secondary Education) in regards to CCSS/CTE/CCR (Common Core State Standards/Career Tech Education/College and Career Readiness). Here is a quote,
‘Once you are in the OPE website pages, you can find this declaration OPE works to strengthen the capacity of colleges and universities to promote reform, innovation and improvement in post-secondary education, promote and expand access to post-secondary education and increase college completion rates for America’s students, and broaden global competencies that drive the economic success and competitiveness of our Nation.” ‘

To see the rest of the article and how FASFA (the paperwork for federal student aid to go to post-secondary education) plays into all the education reform:
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/01/12/ftf-a-dependent-truth/

Also in Feb. 2016, I dug into the 2017 Fed Ed Budget Requests and found how college and other post-secondary education is to seem more affordable. Early College programs; where funding for HBCUs (Historically Black Colleges and Universities) and MSIs (Minority Serving Institutions) were to be impacted as well.

Right slam in the midst of all this is the connection to the SREB (Southern Regional Education Board). How? In the name of ‘research’! If you go back and look at the NC legislation in the works, see how SREB’s research is being relied upon as well as written into the Bill.
(*Note: If you have followed my blog long, you know how deep into the pockets of the CCSS Machine, SREB is. More about SREB will be below.)

In the article I also gave you how the funding will impact TRIO programs, Job Development Grants, and more. The article also shows you how each one of these ties back to the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act), WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act), as well as HEA (Higher Education Act).
See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/02/13/big-bucks-for-post-secondary-ed/

SREB, NC, and the Nation:

Past research has connected SREB to the CCSS Machine’s intent to use community colleges (post-secondary education) as a breeding grounds for CTE (Career Tech Education, the adult portion of CCSS) and more educational alignment to workforce based education. See below for what CCSS Machine organizations fund SREB:

SREBfund To find out more about how and what SREB is doing to education and those who are in education, as well as find out about the other regionally based education boards and their involvement, see: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/04/25/sic-em-saturday-using-community-colleges-for-more-core/

So, the burning question is, why is NC using a known CCSS Machine organization like SREB to create legislation? Take a look at this 2014 screen shot. I believe we can glean from it WHY NC relies on CCSS Machine backed research:

NCSREBpeeps
Others NOT included in the screen shot include Dr. June Atkinson (head of the NC Dept. of Public Instruction, as well as the President of the CCSSO, Council of Chief State School Officers, which own half the copyright to CC Standards!) and Dr. Scott Ralls, the (at that time) head of NC Community Colleges. Ralls has moved on to become President of a Community College in VA since this report.

Now, I know some of my NC anti CCSS Warriors may be shocked to see some of the names they see. My concern is how many of these people have we heard publicly state they were/are against CCSS, but are participating in embedding it in various ways into the State Laws? Do they KNOW the connections already and just turn a blind eye, or has the truth been kept from them?!

For those of you NOT in NC, look at your regional boards to see who is in state government AND serves on these types of boards!

The Clearinghouse Featured in the NC Legislation:

If you refer back to the top of the article and see the National Student Clearinghouse Research Center, you may not know that this Center is ALSO a CCSS Machine member, but it is!! Furthermore, it is being used as MORE research and evidence to create legislation!

From the Clearinghouse’s ‘About Us’ portion of their website you can learn they have been data collecting/sharing since 1993, that they adhere to FERPA (remember it got overhauled to not be as protective as it once was?), and how they abide by the HEA (Higher Education Act). See:
https://nscresearchcenter.org/aboutus/

For an even more in-depth look at the Student Clearinghouse, see this article by Douglas Shapiro (Research Exec for the Student Clearinghouse)

(*Note that the Report is about the Clearinghouse from another post-secondary group, IHEP, Institute for Higher Education Policy. As of this writing, I will look into IHEP in the future.)

So, How Does All of the Above Impact NC Legislation?

1) It further embeds the CCSS Machine, the federally led, privately funded education overreach into the State. Remember, since ALL the States are impacted by the U.S. Dept. of Education, WIOA, ESSA, and HEA, there is NO reason to think NC stands alone in this.

2) Another short answer is it is embedding education reform in the name of student debt reduction. Who will bear the brunt of the debt load? The taxpayers! Here in NC, a recent state-wide Bond was passed in the name of educational updates that will burden our taxpayers for at least 2 generations! (If you like, you can search my blog for the ‘NC Connect’ and learn how the CCSS Machine is involved.)

3) By overhauling how colleges, universities, and all other post-secondary educational institutions are to be held accountable and accredited, you will see a continued chipping away at local control and MORE federal overreach increase. (I have written about this issue as well and how the CCSS Machine is behind it. If you would like that research, let me know.)

4) In the body of the NC SB873 (Access to Affordable College Ed Act), you will see how by taking 4 year state-led colleges and turning them into community colleges it plays right into the hands of the SREB intent/CCSS Machine agenda to use community colleges as not so much educational facilities, but worker prep facilities.
See the NC Legislative Bill:
http://www.ncleg.net/Applications/BillLookUp/LoadBillDocument.aspx?SessionCode=2015&DocNum=7614&SeqNum=0

A Couple of Loose Ends Worth Noting:

In the NC Legislative Bill screen shot, you may notice I underlined the name of David Kirp.
Who is he? ‘Senior Fellow in Residence, is the James D. Marver Professor of Public Policy at the Goldman School of Public Policy, University of California at Berkeley.’

I found this excerpt about him on the Learning Policy Institute’s website (that is where the Sr. Fellowship comes in). The Learning Policy Institute is funded by some pretty big CCSS Machine members (Ford Foundation, the Hewlett Foundation, etc.). The President and CEO of the Learning Policy Institute is none other than  Linda Darling-Hammond (a notoriously known CCSS Machine disciple)!
To access the Learning Policy Institute’s website: https://learningpolicyinstitute.org/people/

AIR was also underlined in the screenshot. American Institutes  of Research are also notoriously tied to the CCSS Machine. Many anti CCSS Warriors have shared the ties, the deceptive moves for data mining carried out in the name of ‘research’. One anti CCSS Warrior in particular has mountains of documented evidence on AIR. Her name is Deb Herbage (FL).  She has recently begun her own blog, DezignzbyDeb (it is on WordPress, like mine). Contact her for any thing AIR related.

Closing:

As twisted as the CCSS paved road is in each of our States, I trust you can see why legislation, either State created or federally, is being used to continue the vicious cycle of grinding down our nation education-wise.
Please, look into your State’s governing bodies.
NC residents: PLEASE contact the leaders and DEMAND accountability while you share the truth.
Warriors, many of these leaders are seeking to be re-elected. Will we continue to put them in office?

Weekend News: Looking at the 2016 NC Primary, Part One

It took me several minutes to find a website featuring more than the Gubernatorial Primary.
It took me several minutes to find a website featuring more than the Gubernatorial Primary for NC.

Greetings this weekend, my trusted anti CCSS Warriors (To be more accurate since the ESSA{Every Student Succeeds Act} passed into law, maybe I should refer to you as the CCSS*/CTE*/CCR* Warriors? But no matter what label is slapped over the ‘CCSS’, peel them back and it is STILL Common Core!) *CCSS: Common Core State Standards/*CTE: Career Tech Education/*CCR: College and Career Readiness (a special ‘favorite’ phrase embedded in the ESSA)

Each of our states is gearing up for elections in 2016. Some of our states will have primaries, some won’t. My news this weekend is especially for my NC Warriors, as we have a race that so far, has been very kept in the corner. Well, you know me…it is time to shine the light on that corner!! Before we turn on the hypothetical flashlight, though, I want to encourage all the Warriors in other states. IF you are having election races soon, do you know all the candidates to consider? Do you even know if there is a race?

From what I have seen and heard here in NC, I had very scant information about one of THE most important races: The Superintendent of Public Instruction! Why?!  Considering the importance of this position and how many people are to be impacted, I would think MOUNTAINS of attention would already be ‘out there’. But as you see above, only one candidate has an embedded website.

While we are pondering this ‘buried’ race, consider this: I didn’t find it on my NC voter guide website (the most recent guide was dated 2015). So, I went to another one: total dud of a website. Then, when steered to another, it a became a ‘wild goose chase’ on another national voter site, where it finally becomes obvious you will not even see NC featured! EGADS, Warriors!!
I found it on a national election information website(see: http://www.uselections.com/nc/nc.htm)!!  I am getting the distinct feeling that something (could it be the CCSS Machine?!) is purposefully hiding this March 2016 Primary. However, before you think my tin foil hat is on a bit too tightly, let’s see IF there is, in fact, more information available about this race.

This edition of my Weekend News will be the FIRST in a two part report. There are 2 Democrats and 3 Republicans in this race. We start with the Democrats below.

Dr. Atkinson’s website:

Again, another wild goose chase. Geez, by the time a citizen unearths all the needed information, they may be so frustrated they will think it isn’t worth researching! (Maybe that is the CCSS Machine’s wish?!) I even tried the embedded link in the US Elections website featured above and it was inaccurate.

While it appears her campaign site is way out in the cyberspace world and I have a deadline to meet, I can share with you some of the news she has been featured in concerning this upcoming election.

1) According to the Raleigh CBS TV Station, WRAL (on 1/8/16),  Dr. Atkinson had several predictions for the state of NC in 2016 and this was among them. “I will be re-elected as State Superintendent of Public Instruction.”  You need to see her other predictions as they include assessments, Pre-K, and more. Access the information: http://www.wral.com/state-superintendent-shares-predictions-for-nc-public-schools-in-2016/15217644/
2) According to another website, Lillian’s List (a group supporting women who are creating  progressive changes in NC), Atkinson will have their full support. This will be along with several other key political positions, Lillian’s List will support. See: http://www.lillianslist.org/blog/2016-january-newsletter-new (To see the progressive women LL has helped place in office, see: http://www.lillianslist.org/candidates/elected)
See below for an upcoming ‘kick off’ event where Atkinson (among others (will be featured).

http://www.lillianslist.org/events/2016-campaign-kickoff-luncheon

3) I FINALLY was able to uncover Dr. Atkinson’s website (after many hours). How? It was featured on her Twitter account! Her website has almost no information about anything in the future except the words “Help me continue the journey for the sake of children and NC’s prosperity.” (see her site: http://www.drjuneatkinson.com/)

While we on the subject, you can learn a lot more about Atkinson from her tweets (see: https://twitter.com/DrJuneAtkinson).
Such as what CCSS Machine rhetoric she is spinning in support of the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act), or her sharing about a Dec. 2015 Washington, D.C. meeting. It was called the ‘White House Convening of State Educational Leaders’. The only thing you will learn is she was there. That’s it.

Being the researcher I am, I found more information about the ‘Convening’ from CT and OR attendees! Below is from the CT source. (see: http://www.housedems.ct.gov/cook/2015/pr065_2015-12-16.asp#.Vppf1vkrLIU)

“Topics discussed included: high school redesign; tuition-free Community College; Computer Science; College Opportunity and Affordability; Early Education; FAFSA; and College Scorecard”

From the OR source:
Who was leading the education leaders at the Convening: U.S. Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan, incoming Acting U.S. Secretary of Education, John King, Senior Officials from the White House and the U.S. Department of Education and other national education leaders for The White House Convening of State Education Leaders on December 8, 2015.” (see:
https://www.oregonlegislature.gov/johnsonm/Documents/Johnson%20White%20House.pdf
)

Related: The U.S. Dept. of Education released two days AFTER the Convening, the 2016 National Education Technology Plan. The subtitle? Future Ready Learning, Re-imagining the Role of Technology in Education” (see: http://sites.ed.gov/octae/2015/12/)

How is this related? NC is fully entrenched in Future Ready Schools!! See: http://www.dpi.state.nc.us/docs/gradrequirements/resources/gradchecklists.pdf) To see a Future Ready School Summit Meeting (contains all the notes and information an anti CCSS Warrior needs to find new ‘ammo’ for the War  Against the Core), see: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1jrz91itHcJ4-veKPMSrfCLUXihl9GJwf0az-vwQDyMI/edit?pref=2&pli=1

**Before we move to the other candidate I wanted to explain WHY I went so far into detail with Atkinson’s ties. Whether you live in NC or not, her stance on education WILL impact you! As President of the CCSSO, her influence is felt everywhere in education! Besides, as the head over the entity which owns half the copyright to the CCS Standards, we don’t have to guess how supportive (or sold out to) of the Common Core she is!

 Henry Pankey’s Campaign:

According to the Winston-Salem(NC) Journal’s article about Pankey, his campaign is more grassroots in nature than the Atkinson’s. The article tells you some about his background before it launches into (at that point questionable) Atkinson’s tactics. Poor guy can’t even get a full article. See: http://www.journalnow.com/news/columnists/scott_sexton/sexton-henry-pankey-s-qualifications-for-n-c-superintendent-more/article_9923498c-e3d5-11e4-bdf1-6b7e3fe8731a.html

Below is  a picture of Pankey:

turnaround

AEI (American Entertainment International)Speaker’s Bureau had this to share about Pankey, “Henry Pankey’s new book ‘How to Turn Around low Performing Schools’ will be his step by step detailed platform as he runs for North Carolina State Superintendent of Instruction. It includes common sense basics designed to turn around struggling schools and create “Schools of Excellence”. The successful outcomes have been vetted and certified by the North Carolina Department of Instruction, newspapers, news reports and magazines.”

Hold on, educational success worthy of an entire state has  been vetted by the media?! Where is the legislative vetting? The teachers’ vetting? Aren’t they much more credible that the media’s approval?! The biography goes on to share this: “Henry Pankey is best known as a school improvement mentor and highly effective tough love urban principal.”

With all the behavior interventions in place, as well as the huge additions the ESSA will usher into NC schools (as it will in every other stated) I question the school improvement tactics, the mentoring, and most especially the tough love. We Warriors have already seen enough awful evidence of the CCSS Machine’s mind altering moves in education, do we really need more?!
See what else the AEI website has to say: http://aeispeakers.com/speakerbio.php?SpeakerID=770

Over on http://www.henrypankeyjr.com, the list of praises for him is quite revealing when you consider the presence of  the CCSS Machine (ie: U.S. Ed leaders, public instruction groups, etc.) See: http://www.henryjpankey.com/testimonials

Related: “Schools of Excellence”, are not only in NC, the schools are in other states as well. See the 2014 (latest list I could find) of nation-wide Schools of Excellence:
http://www.magnet.edu/files/awards/school-of-excellence-list-2014-merit.pdf
It is important to point out here that exactly what qualifies a school to be tagged as one of excellence is a bit harder to define. Why? Well, you have the Merit reference in the above link, then there is the National PTA’s program, then the Blue Ribbon Schools program in the U.S. Dept. of Ed (which also is an excellence distinction awarded to ANY type of school meeting the parameters). I also found the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges has a School of Excellence program, too! The CCSS Machine is tied to the National PTA, the U.S. Dept. of Ed, the Magnet/Merit, AND the Career Schools/Colleges entities! See: https://www.pta.org/excellence (PTA’s site);
http://www.accsc.org/Events/Professional-Development-Conference/Award-Winners/Schools-of-Excellence.aspx (Career Schools/College’s site); http://www2.ed.gov/programs/nclbbrs/index.html (the U.S. Dept. of Ed’s site)

Mentoring under the CCSS: The ASCD (Gates Foundation funded and very much a part of the CCSS Machine) features many resources for ‘tough love mentoring’ aligned to CCSS.
See: http://www.ascd.org/publications/educational-leadership/apr04/vol61/num07/-Mentoring-New-Leaders.aspx
Here is a document from CA where mentoring and CCSS are drilled down on people:

The Center for American Progress has a Teacher Success guide for mentoring and CCSS:

The effect of Robert Marzano’s behavior interventions are already well in place not only in NC, but in the rest of the USA. Here is everything I have on his work: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/?s=Marzano

Whether or not, Pankey would carry on what Atkinson has put into play for NC, will of course, be decided later, should he survive the Primary. However, I am raising concerns (with the above related resources)  to help emphasize that  there are serious questions the citizens need to ask BEFORE they vote!  If either of these is against more Common Core (aka: College/Career Readiness, NC Essential Standards, Career Tech Education, etc.) it certainly does NOT look like it.

In “Monday’s Musings” I will look into the 3 Republicans vying for the NC Superintendent of Public Instruction.

Monday Musings: If I Were on a Repeal Common Core Committee

Hey, I would be a great team member!
Hey, I would be a great team member!

If you’ve been following the news in NC, you are aware we have a “Review Committee” currently studying the Common Core Standards. IF you’ve not been following the NC events, you should..opportunities to hold those in charge accountable for ridding us of the CCSS are abundant.

Quick review:

First up, the way in which NC received Common Core, was, without a single legislative voice. Then, when enough stink was raised, those in charge, got very busy, created legislation and held hearings. Only 1, on March 20, 2014, had opportunities for NC citizens to speak in support of the Standards OR speak out against the Standards. Of the 60 speakers, I was the first one to say “I’m against the Common Core Standards“. Happily, that day, there were more of us AGAINST the CCSS than supporting them.

Hopeful, I even publicly stated that those in charge seeking knowledge, advice, or research could seriously consider someone like me! After all, I’ve been following the push for nationalized standards in America since 2009. I have a ‘few’ files I could share, folks.  But..as the media will tell us a committee was, indeed formed. How it was formed is an embarrassment to the taxpayers and an affront to our legal system.

How so? The law signed stated exactly who was to be on the Repeal (not Review) committee. The members were to be a mix of not only professional educators BUT early childhood experts AND parents AND concerned citizens (only educators are on the committee). It also stated deadlines (totally blown off), meeting locations (not to include the DPI, but yet, oddly enough, the first meeting was held in a tiny room of the DPI). The DPI wasn’t to be involved for transparency, accountability, and frankly, protective reasons. Yet, they are doing their best to bully the system and have their way. The reason a cross section of the population was to be assigned was to have as much objectivity as possible. I invite you to go look up each of the members and find out how many are CCSS disciples. What a sham for our students.

Now, if only they’d taken me up on my offer:

You might be reading this and thinking I’m bitter..hardly, while largely disappointed I didn’t get chosen to serve on the Repeal Committee, I have been better able to be a watchdog, to continue my researching into all the cracks, crevices, and wormholes the CCSS machine has insured it’s in here in NC. I’ve also been able to help folks nationwide. I’ve been saved from the ‘stacked deck’ mentality; spared the fits of unkind words, no lady should utter.

I am not pleasantly surprised by the unfairness it appears is happening. I’m most troubled that once again, while this state has the tremendous opportunity to rid itself of ALL that CCSS entails, money is speaking louder than NC’s people.

“Had your chance, muffed it.”

This quote is from “Chitty Chitty, Bang Bang”, a movie I’ve seen many times and a quote I’ve used repeatedly. Dick Van Dyke was seeking the attention of a wealthy business owner. The wealthy man, being very impatient, gave Mr. Van Dyke only seconds to state his case. When it didn’t happen the way the business man wanted or in the time frame he set out, he uttered the words, “Had your chance, muffed it. Good day, sir.”  So, to those who chose the committee, here’s what you muffed:

a) Citizens, non educator professionals who are qualified, concerned, and very involved in this present state of educational chaos.

b) Researchers who don’t get lobbyist money, corporation funding, or are otherwise impeded in what they discover so their objectivity is absolute.

c) Everyday people who can make a difference and rid the state of NC of this illegal, ill written, insidious mess. Folks who could, would, and have pledged to help right the wrongs public private partnership created CCSS brought us.

d) The transparency factor, the accountability is very suspect when you chose to disrespect the law. How can we citizens trust you when you act like a spoiled child?

e) Your opportunity to cut the crap by cutting the purse strings. Education is NOT a business to be bought, use ‘best practices’, unite to Washington, D.C. agendas. Education is more than this.  Students should NEVER, ever be referred to as ‘talent supply’, ‘human capital’, part of a ‘pipeline’ or any other of those sold out, educratic terms you share.

f) The relationship you could of formed with me. You missed out on my humor, charm, personality, knowledge, networking capability, teamwork ability, loyalty, dedication, five years worth of research, fact finding skills, fearlessness. I, along with my well connected anti CC friends/warriors could show you things about the CC Standards you’d have to see to believe, but..guess you’ll  miss that too.

Everything has a time, a purpose:

Well, we all have a job to do, paid to do it or not. You will continue on in your work, and I, in mine. Remember, I, along with my thousands of buddies, will be watching what transpires with NC and CC.  Should you need me, or someone just as up to date on CCSS as possible, I’m not hard to find. I am willing to give our students the best education possible. One that’s agenda free, legal, honoring, true, and right.

It’s time to finish what was started and ‘kill the Core’.    common-core-NC-house-060414

Let’s not muff the opportunity to have education free of all the CC Machine (CCSS, STEM, AP, STEaM, Hire Standards, College, Career Tech CC, Community Colleges, IB Schools, UN Global Schools, Race to the Top, Smarter Balance Assessments, Gates, Pearson Publishing, data mining and every other connected group). Let’s show the nation how tough NC can be and say “ENOUGH!” “No more Core!”

Sic ‘Em Saturday

Today’s post is dedicated to my fellow NC citizens set to ‘storm the halls’ of the building the First Common Core Repeal Committee meeting is set for on Monday, September 22nd!

Present a united front in Raleigh, my friends!
Present a united front in Raleigh, my friends!

We have worked long and hard for this day. A day where we will begin to see the wrongs righted; the plight of illegal, immoral, and injustice corrected. We anti CCS warriors have lost sleep, sacrificed time with our families, traveled far and wide to see this day when the Common Core in NC will begin to die!

We will not rest, we will not stop until our students, from PreK to workforce are given back their futures! No amount of money will ever be equal to the amount of promise our students can regain with Common Core abolished and out of their lives forever!

We will remember which authorities over us are fighting for our students and which ones are fighting for corporate greed. We know our power is in not only our voices, but our votes..which we will use to root out pro Common Core Standards authorities in November 2014!

May your journey to Raleigh be safe, your presence in the room, the hallways connected be ominous. May your stance be unwavering as you confront, face to face, those who will hold our students education in their hands. May your stares hold them to the highest of accountability. May you be fierce, firm, and formidable. May you be honest, sincere, and honorable.

For each one of you present, know there are many more of us who are standing with you, continuing to fight from where we are. We will join you there in the future, make no mistake. We know we have much work left to complete.

We are anti-Common Core Standards warriors: we are leaders, we are committed, purposed and ready to carry on for our students. We will accept nothing less than preserving the honor, integrity, excellence, maturity, well roundness a true quality education can deliver.

We know, with every fiber of our beings that Common Core Standards are NOT any of the above. We know a true quality education builds off the parameters of due process and is crafted to honor America and our Constitution. We know a true quality education’s goal should not be to line the pockets and bank accounts of those involved. A true education is priceless in value and comes at a great cost. We know for our students sake’s and their futures that only tried, true, legally binding educational system will suffice and serve them masterfully well. You stand not just for NC students, but for all students across America.

I stand with you, in honor and in my armor. Give ’em hell!
