Turn the CCSS Page, Please

Anti CCSS Warriors, just when you think we have heard it all..Are you ready for a new chapter from the CCSS Machine’s book of lies?! Today’s ‘From the Files Tuesday’ will reveal it all. This is an in-depth article. If you have only a short amount of time, be sure to scan it, then go back and re-read it in detail when you have more time. The information is HUGE in our War Against the Core!

TURN (Teacher Union Reform Network):

Thanks to a recent email from a dedicated anti CCSS/Fed Led Ed Warriors, Michelle E. and Flo E.,  I was pointed to this group which joins forces between the AFT (American Federation of  Teachers ) and the NEA (National Educators Association). Both the AFT and the NEA are members of the CCSS Machine, and proud to be included. They joined forces with Sen. Lamar Alexander and helped push the ESSA through into its law status. Both groups are hardly friends of those of us opposed to the education reform which seeks to do much more harm than good. So why, as powerful as both groups are, would they need a united force called TURN? Who, or what other CCSS Machine members or groups back TURN, if any? Let’s see what Files we can find as evidence. Before we look exclusively at them, let’s see what else we can discover.

The Email’s Tips:

Here in the Warriors’ (Michelle and Flo) words are the big clues to the Files we will uncover, “Look what I found they are funded by Eli Broad and Gates, HOLY S%&T!!!! By 2001, (leader of TURN & AFT VP) Adam Urbanski (Rochester NY–the seed bed for education reform pilot testing grounds) and the TURNcoats were collecting cash from none other than Eli Broad, to the tune of $10,000,000, for their work to undercut teachers…By June of 2001, Rod Paige was signed on as a supporter, as was NEA President, Bob Chase, who viewed it all as very positive development…Fast forward to 2010, and we find the network continuing to be funded by corporate foundations that have public school teachers in their crosshairs. Coordination now is handled through another non-profit, Consortium for Educational Change, which is funneling Gates money to both AFT and NEA players who want to get in on the action. Enter, Paul Toner…
The Consortium for Educational Change (CEC), an Illinois-based network of teacher unions, school districts, and professional organizations that work to make school systems more collaborative, high-performing organizations, was awarded $2 million from the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to support the expansion of the Teacher Union Reform Network (TURN), a national network of American Federation of Teachers and National Education Association union locals.”

The Files from the Tips Above:

In no particular order, here is the evidence (files) to back up Michelle’s and Flo’s findings:

1) The 2013 CEC Gates Foundation Granthttp://www.gatesfoundation.org/How-We-Work/Quick-Links/Grants-Database/Grants/2013/10/OPP1097353

2) Linking Eli Broad to TURN (and a few other reform minded groups we can look into (the Broad Superintendents Academy and Broad Residency programs),

2e) Also involved with the Broad Superintendents Academy and Residency is the organization called Strategic Data Project (SDP) housed in Harvard University (*Note: as you know I have tied Harvard to the CCSS Machine several times before this article. Most noteworthy is their connection to Pearson Publishing as well.) To see the SDP website:
http://sdp.cepr.harvard.edu/ The Gates Foundation has also awarded the SDP mega bucks (2015) for the 3rd phrase of the Project, see: http://www.gatesfoundation.org/How-We-Work/Quick-Links/Grants-Database/Grants/2015/02/OPP1126061

3) The original source where Michelle and Flo got their information from (*Note: there are a few expletive words):

The People Mentioned:

We have just looked at Eli Broad and his connections, but what about the others mentioned in both Michelle’s email and the original source she cited? I am not giving information on Bill or Melinda Gates, as we have tons of evidence on them.

1) Adam Urbanski, his biography straight from the AFT,
http://www.aft.org/about/leadership/adam-urbanski
(*Note: He is originally from Poland and this bio will tie him to both TURN and the CEC as well. He is a supporter of ‘collective bargaining’ in education.)

1a) Related to the AFT is the fact that they recently joined forces with UK Unions to hold Pearson Publishing accountable. See: http://www.aft.org/news/aft-and-uk-unions-join-hold-pearson-accountable (*Note: with what Michelle, Flo, and I have found, this is sure to be  a false narrative. How or why? Keep reading..you should the reason why we believe this to unfold right before your eyes.)

2) Rod Paige, the former U.S. Dept. of Education Secretary (2001-2005) is now involved with the Thomas Fordham Institute (another CCSS Machine member). See: http://edexcellence.net/about-us/fordham-staff/rod-paige
(*Note: his biography shares his is a lifelong educator and a big supporter of the ‘best of breed solutions’ in education from a national standpoint.)

3) Bob Chase, former NEA President was interviewed by Thought and Action back in the late 1990s. It was featured in the NEA’s publication. Here is the document, you need to read his words about connecting preK to grad schools and other reform ideas we are seeing lived out.  ChaseInterview

4) Paul Toner, former President of the MA Teachers Association, Toner is now involved with the New Voice Strategies, according to the Business Wire website. According to their article, Toner is well known as a bridge builder in education and polarizes education policy.
See: http://www.businesswire.com/news/home/20141001006416/en/Paul-Toner-Announced-President-Voice-Strategies (*Note: New Voice Strategies has an on-going relationship with the NEA. The Gates Foundation awarded the New Voice Strategies a grant back in 2013. The Grant link:

CEC, Consortium for Educational Change:

Their website: http://cecillinois.org/
To see what policies guide the Consortiumhttp://cecillinois.org/about/guiding-documents/
This excerpt reveals Consortium member groups (which work with the U.S. Dept of Education), “Since 2011, 7 national organizations (AASA, AFT, CCSSO, CGCS, FMCS, NEA, NSBA) along with the U.S. Department of Education have been working together to support labor-management collaboration in states and school districts throughout the country to advance student learning. Based on the belief that supporting good governance of public education in our nation’s school districts is a mutual responsibility, these organizations have jointly planned several conferences, and collaborated on creation of a document titled “On the Same Page.”

To decipher those Consortium member groups above, AASA is the American Association of School Administrators (aka the School Superintendents Association); AFT is the American Federation of Teachers; CCSSO is the Council of Chief State School Officers; CGCS is the Council of Great City Schools; FMCS is Federal Mediation and Conciliation Service; NEA is the National Educators Association; NSBA is the National School Boards Association. Of these member groups, I have researched all but the FMCS. How does this Service connect to the CCSS Machine? Labor Management. What does Labor Management have to do with education? 1) Consider the Consortium is all about changing education; 2) consider a big part of the CCSS Machine is a workforce based education, not an academically based education; 3) lastly that On the Same Page document..it’s full title? See the screen shot below:

Lastly, TURN:

Their website: http://www.turnweb.org/

By now, you have been a TON of resources and evidence. It has been quite the twisting turning mess we have come to expect from the CCSS Machine. We started with TURN, and we are ending with them. Below is their 5 minute sales pitch as to why TURNing education is so vital to our nation. What they left out was, the TRUTH: TURNing education to resemble a quasi-education is the Agenda of the CCSS Machine!

Tech Thursday: Online Learning for Everything?

Warriors Against the Core, We know there are all kinds of great ways to teach and to learn. Common Core has ruined this in SO many ways. With the push for digital this, digital that, on-line courses, and all the other resources available via the computer it can be SO confusing to know which are CCSS aligned and which are not. While the question I’ve posed to you in the title is rhetorical, we still should see what are some of the latest offerings out there. Why? To help steer clear of them, to inform others who might need to know, and to see what pro CCSS organizations are behind them.

English Language Learners:

As an avid education researcher, I get all kinds of notices about educational products which are new. One such recent announcement was a way to help those learning the English language with a new ” innovative digital ELL curriculum designed to help close the achievement gap.” The goal? Improved student outcomes. According to the sales pitch the product was to ‘boost performances’ of those ELL students. Shameful..we boost the performance of our cars. In my researched opinion (and personal experience as an educator) we shouldn’t be teaching to ‘boost performance’ of our students. We should be seeing educational resources which ‘encourage and help our students to LEARN’ not to ‘perform’! The on-line lessons are provided by Middlebury Interactive Languages. However, MIL worked in tandem with ‘We Are Teachers’.  MiL (Middlebury Interactive Languages has courses for K-12 students in all school choices, including homeschooling). If you’re curious about the CCSS Machine’s propaganda, don’t be, it is there plain as day. Here is an excerpt from the website, “Middlebury Interactive Languages is the academic leader in digital language learning for K-12 students. We provide access to superior world language and English Language Learner curriculum solutions that prepare students with the skills and cultural understanding to compete in the 21st Century global marketplace.” So, what company or organization is behind MIL? Middlebury College! What is also interesting is that most of the board managers have had some tie (at one time or another with K12, Inc. K12, Inc. has ties to CCSS, as well.) We can come back to them in a minute or two. If you look at MIL’s education partners, you will see quite a few members of the CCSS Machine. See them: http://www.middleburyinteractive.com/about/partners

K12, Inc. I previously showed you their CCSS ties in two articles. One ties them to the NASBE (National Assoc. of State Boards of Education). See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/02/14/sic-em-saturday-do-you-know-nasbe/
The next one showed you how this on-line school fared with North Carolina. (hint: it wasn’t nice) See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/02/23/monday-musings-two-wrongs-no-right/

We Are Teachers, (WAT) This group has a ton of resources available for anyone who is on the internet. When I found it I could get anything from lessons, to free printables, and free recipes. When I looked closer, I saw I could get all the STEM stuff I wanted, as well as PD, Professional Development. As you know, my research has proven just how twisted the ties between STEM and CCSS are. But back to the website, it seemed everything was easy to find EXCEPT who runs WAT. We Are Teachers is a LLC (Limited Liability Corporation) based in TX. It appears that all kinds of educational information is available for anyone on-line. See their terms of use policies, http://www.weareteachers.com/homepage/terms-of-use
The concern is, with this type of information sharing can have you come face to face with CCSS, STEM, or who knows what else? The screen shot below is from the WAT ‘Assessment’ section of the website.
WATstuff

Closing:

My fellow warriors, what do you think about all this? An on-line educational company so bad they were at once run out of a state, only to at a later day, be allowed?! Educational services based out of a college that has been around for years, which not only offers its CCSS aligned materials to public students, but extends them to those who are homeschooled?! A LLC where teachers are encouraged to share, but has a nebulous side to it?! Not to mention STEM?! Why, oh why, must everything  connected to education seem to always come back to the CCSS Machine?! I am so beyond mad over the fact that the CCSS Machine has slicked up its offerings to include any student or teacher in or outside of the traditional public schools!

What is a take-away from this article which I most hope you will share with others? If you must choose on-line for all your student’s needs, SNOOP! Be nosy, ask questions about what group created the educational content. Has the curricula been vetted properly? Bottom line: if something does not appear to be trustworthy, walk away! If it sounds too good, check it out anyway! We say in the anti CC warrior conversations that ‘we will not conform’. If we really mean those words, we MUST investigate everything! When we find ANYTHING connected to the agenda of the CCSS Machine, we MUST expose it! Warriors, let’s learn a valuable lesson from our proCCSS fellows about what NOT to do when it comes to education.

It can best be summed up in an old saying.  ‘Ride the fence too long, you find splinters in your bottom’.

RMT: The Other Side of the ESEA Battle?!

One set of voices urges Congress to save our children; one set of voices urges Congress to correct proposed legislation.
One set of voices urges Congress to save our children; one set of voices urges Congress to correct proposed legislation.

Good Warrior Day to you, anti CCSS fighters. We’ve been gearing up for a ‘showdown’ so to speak for months now over HR5, S1177, and  other proposed CCSS/CTE laced legislative bills before Congress in Washington. It’s down to the wire. The voting surrounding most of these is set to possibly happen in a couple of days.

While those of us fighting to END the newer versions of the ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act), there are those pushing to FIX the newer versions! No, this fact isn’t new news, but what is new, is the amount of fervor on the ‘fix it’, ‘get it right’, or that other pro CCSS aspect; the ‘pass it now!’ groups.
We’ve seen the #StopECAA, #StopCommonCore, and other Twitter handles used to raise awareness for the HOW and WHY our education system needs to be set free from the illegally based CCSS. We know how often those social media outlets (and many others related) are shared in an effort to get all anti CCSS warriors in the game. Case and point, today, many anti CCSS warriors will be active in the efforts to STOP Congress.

Many of our fellow anti CCSS warriors have exposed those from the ‘pass it now’ group of pro CCSS sections, but have we really looked at the ‘fix it’ sector? I think we should.

#getESEAright:

It appears this Twitter handle is related to the NEA (National Educators Association). Specifically an offshoot of their 2015 Conference going on now. (another riddle for today could be ‘Why is the NEA 2015 Conference so conveniently scheduled before a huge voting issue in the U.S. Congress?’ However, I’m digressing with that query.) It’s important to note that the NEA is very supportive of the CCSS Machine. (see:
http://www.nea.org/home/46653.htm)

Here’s a screen shot for youas proof of the Twitter page and its related group:
getright

So, what are some of the ‘getting it right’ parts of ESEA?

According to these attendees of the NEA2015:
One conference attendee’s tweet, “All Kentucky students deserve an opportunity to learn and be successful!”

A member from NY, “Please speak up for students to #getESEAright. The Every Child Achieves Act is a good start.” (this same person said the ESEA is ‘standing up’ for students)

Here’s a visual from another ‘tweet’:

gtrightpic2

From NC, where I live, comes this picture of an unknown person. This particular picture was used as a way to influence the elected officials this went to. If you live in NC, you know these officials voting records concerning CCSS and/or education.

adamssupport

The AFT (American Federation of Teachers) is gathering at least 10,000 letters to the U.S. Senate in support of the ESEA, so far not quite 2, 500 have been sent. If you’d like to see the letter, https://actionnetwork.org/letters/pass-the-every-child-achieves-act

Believe me, there’s much more on this particular Twitter page.

One point I must stress however, is this:
While most of the sentiment is correct that the versions of the ESEA on the table need to be overhauled, the danger is in the rhetoric of just WHAT needs correction. If you look at the above evidence, note what’s been generalized..what’s taught. It seems the ONLY specific this ‘get it right’ group is after is ending the testing, or ending the ‘teaching to the test’.

While these are worthy goals, the overall CCSS/CTE alignment is completely UNSPOKEN! CCSS/CTE is SO toxic to our education we MUST not leave any portion OUT when seeking change! To do so, is to not protect our students and teachers ENOUGH.

If we aren’t specific about ending CCSS/CTE alignment how can we expect Congress to abandon it?!

One last visual you need to see, as an anti CCSS Warrior:

If you don't know what groups NASBE holds allegiance to, here's my previously published article exposing Gates, Pearson, and other key CCSS Machine members. https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/02/14/sic-em-saturday-do-you-know-nasbe/

This one lays out the money and agenda

https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/03/27/fom-the-ccssos-hungry-eyes/
This one lays out the agenda and ties to the NGA (National Governors Assoc.) and the CCSSO (Council of Chief State School Officers)

What’s also being left unsaid is how all of this is tied to the overhauling of the HEA (Higher Education Act) and the overhauling of the Zero to Three Year Olds.

(*NOTE: CCSS/CTE are heavily laced in the HEA! I just published a huge article yesterday on how the CCSS/CTE agenda is being geared for the little ones.)

We, as anti CCSS warriors and citizens only have today to fight. We’ve not a clue if we’ll be blessed with a tomorrow.

We’ve ONE ‘shot’ to make our voices heard. We’ve ONE opportunity to expose our Congress members to the TOTAL array of CCSS/CTE issues laced in ALL the education proposed legislation. We’ve not time to pick and choose parts of CCSS/CTE to hold on to, or to see improved. Common Core/Career and Tech Education is ALL illegally based, untested, not educator based, and UNACCEPTABLE!

After much research, time, and effort: my 2014 jpeg creation showing CCSS is preK to post-secondary.

Sic’ ‘Em Saturday: Do You Know NASBE?

This national group has deep pockets..and lots of hands in them.
This national group has deep pockets..and lots of hands in them.

Before the CCSS, a Brief History:

The National Association of State Boards of Education is a public policy, non profit group since 1958. They are dedicated to helping your state B of E be even stronger. Given CCSS’s grasp on our state Bs of E..we’re in trouble. (more history: http://www.nasbe.org/about-us/about-nasbe/)

Enter, Mr. and Mrs. Gates:

Well over $1 million dollars from GF to NASBE. So much for objectivity in education.
Well over $1 million dollars from GF to NASBE. So much for objectivity in education.

Click on the screen shot above to see just how many dollars the Gates have granted the National Association of State School Boards of Education. Here’s a very brief description of each of the years. Website address is on the left hand side of the screen shot.

2005’s grant: to redesign high schools via leverage tools

2006’s grant: to address those high school redesign priorities

2009’s grant: regional meetings across the nation to ‘increase knowledge’ about CCSS

2011’s grant: building capacity to implement CCSS across the nation

2013’s grant: more implementation money for CCSS to survive and thrive

2014’s grant: money for student data safeguarding

Jump In, the Rest of the CCSS Gang is Here!

By no means are the folks at Gates Foundation the only CCSS supporters who are unabashedly partnering with the NASBE. Here’s the short list of the Backers for the Common Core with their hands in your state’s Boards of Education:

Pearson Publishing, Inc.

The Wallace Foundation

AdvancEd

Houghton Mifflin Harcourt Publishers

CTB-McGraw Hill

K12, Inc

College Board

ACT, Inc

See the rest of the gang at: http://www.nasbe.org/about-us/partners/   *Note: you’ll be sure to recognize almost all of the logos of those who support Common Core, don’t forget those who are included and don’t have a logo featured.

Navigating the Website:

Now that you know how subjective this non-profit is toward education and Common Core, be sure to look into their policy briefs. Handy for your research are downloads galore.

Topics that need our action on a citizen level (our action steps for today’s post) include:

Focus on the ‘curriculum and instruction’ topic (the most recent information is 2013), the ‘assessments’ (includes the Next Generation Science Standards), ‘standards and accountability’ (repeats some of the other downloads), ‘teaching’ (includes calling students ‘human capital’). What’s truly sad is there is absolutely NOTHING in the ‘education data privacy’ topic!

What may be  surprising (especially if you’re new to fighting the Core): The Centers for Disease Control partnering with NASBE. Think there’s not a connection between CDC and student data? Here’s a pdf I found from the Stop Common Core New Hampshire’s site: Wellness-Evaluation
To see what the Stop CC NH folks have, be sure to see their website: http://stopcommoncorenh.org/sccnh/category/privacy/page/3/   *Note: look for the “Gilman Health and Wellness Survey” post.

What You Can Do Now:

If you live in a state where your state level education people are elected, great! You are the TRUE power, not these CCSS bloated organizations! If you live in a state where those in charge are appointed, work to take the power of the people BACK to the people! Get to know how the State Board of Ed interacts with the state government. They MUST work together somehow. Is there a link your anti CCSS group can use a grain of sand that will quickly gain speed? If so, jump on it! If not, continue to beseech your officials to LISTEN to the people. Continue to use all the evidence you can to show those in charge. Many have very little clue as to just WHAT Common Core is OR the fact that it is in SO many places we were not informed of. We can’t afford to be blindsighted anymore than we’ve already been by the CCSS Machine!

A special shout out to all the Patriots Against Common Core.
