The G.C. Update

Why would an Anti Fed Ed Warrior need to be concerned with ‘G.C.’? What is ‘G.C.’?
Warriors, the zippy quick answer is ‘global citizen’. The ‘update’ portion surrounding G.Cs? That’s what this article will look into. Why am I abbreviating ‘global citizen’? To simply fly under the radar of social media censorship.

When We Last “Tuned” Into G.C. News:

Warriors, we discovered in February 2018, the Global Citizenship (a direct ‘attack’ on every nation’s individuality and culture by the U.N., United Nations) received a boost from the U.S. Congress via legislation to increase America’s involvement in all things global. Before we look at what’s up in March 2018, or being planned in the future, step back with me, into my archives to see the trail of evidence I’ve shared with you. Why would we need this now?

With the States continually being forced into complying with all ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) has in mandates, we will see the push for G.C.s increase. Especially among our youngest students, as well, as those ‘outside’ the traditional education choices.

We also learned back in July 2017, that the G20 (Group of 20) was using their related task force, the B20 (Business Group of 20) to align education toward global citizenship. The related festival surrounding the G20 featured many well known celebrities to push how wonderful it is that education is the best way to give us global citizens.

From the Fall of 2017, I showed you the Global Citizen scorecard America has. You also will be able to see which groups want to have your babies become global citizens more than American citizens.

A bit further back from my research (2016), we were able to find out how the U.N.’s Model Clubs are embedded in homeschooling. The intent? To help infiltrate this educational choice with not only U.N. philosophy, but global citizenship tools, as well.

To create G.C.s out of every American, young and old? What better tool to use than the Olympic Games (as well as the Special Olympics). The U.N.’s global agenda is well placed in this fashion.

Warriors, if you’ve not heard of the UNA (United Nations Association), then you will not know the United States is a member. The UNA-US office is based in Washington, D.C., but you can find groups all over the separate States. While the UNA is not new, look below at some of what is new:

How Did I Find The USA’s UN Association Website?

Warriors, I was able to find the UNA-US website by way of the WFUNA, which stands for World Federation of United Nations Associations. WFUNA wrapped up a winter 2018 Conference back in January. The theme?Mission Possible: International Agents of Change”. One of the key topics? Quality education for all. My fellow Warriors, education is SDG #4. (SDG is short for Sustainable Development Goal. The entire set of SDGs are UN created and US adhered to.)

The Global Citizen Forum (2013) was founded by the same man who also formed the Smart Group (1980s). The Smart Group’s tag line, “One World, One Vision” and is steeped in Technocracy. The man? BK Modi. He’s even been cited by the U.S. Congress as a Humanitarian.

Back in February 2018, Rihanna (celebrity) was a part of the Global Citizen’s efforts to raise billions of dollars for global education for all. (Ironic that a UN led effort for global education is named “Education for All”.) The US’s 2018 contribution to G.C., $375 million dollars.

Among the Board of Directors for G.C., you’ll find the Gates Foundation, Forbes, Huffington Post, and, others. The American groups in the CCSS Machine show up here, as they have been showing up for almost everything connected to education. Oh, and G.C.’s stance on education? Educate children to lead others out of poverty.

A Fox In The Hen House

, in my last Weekend News, I shared with you much about the Ed/Workforce Committee’s latest email propaganda moves for education. (If you missed it, here’s the link: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/12/04/weekend-news-worker-ed/ )


As if to rubber stamp all the success of the Ed/Workforce under Kline’s leadership, it was announced on 12/2/16, that Rep. Virginia Foxx (from right here in NC) had been tapped as the new leader.

It hit the news on that same day that one of Foxx’s statements included how she’d love to take down the U.S. Dept. of Ed. While that may or may not be what happens under her rein over Ed/Workforce, I do know how unhappy quite a few of Foxx’s fellow North Carolinians are with her education votes from the past.

Funding The CTE Love:

Since Rep. Foxx has a background in both business and education, I was curious as to when she went from academic based education to career based education. Especially in light of her bold statement (see the fox in the hen house picture).

According to the FEC (Federal Election Commission), among her recent Campaign contributors are:

Education Affiliates based in VA (a education business group which ‘delivers real-life career skills’) What’s interesting is that both managing members of EA were formerly employed by Global Knowledge, Inc. Global Knowledge, Inc. has ties to IBM (a huge CCSS/CTE supporter).

Finance Scholar Group based in CA, but has offices across the nation. FSG assesses public policies and advises clients in strategic moves. They also conduct research. Among their experts are ties to at least 3 pro CCSS/CTE universities or foundations: Harvard, Carnegie Mellon and the Kellogg Foundation. Rep. Foxx was not listed among the FSG’s client list.

College America, Inc. (is part of Center for Excellence in Higher Education, Inc.) based out of UT, but has non-profit campuses across the nation. CA offers free GED courses (GED is now CCSS/CTE and College/Career Readiness aligned); skill based degrees (since 1964), and more. The parent company, Center for Excellence in Higher Education, Inc. is also based in UT. The sole stock holder, Carl Barney has a very interesting education philosophy. Closing:

Will Rep. Foxx be another ‘ed champ’ or ‘ed chump’ for America? Unless she’s changed her views on CTE, it looks like the CCSS Machine has another ally in a strategic location. From the financial aspect, I do not think we need to wonder.

Weekend News: CCSS Rumors Abound, at Least in NC

Warriors Against the Core, maybe you saw it this past week, and maybe you didn’t. What am I referring to? The news that NC had given Common Core the boot. I saw it surface on several anti CC Facebook pages where folks were expressing jealousy over the fact they wished their state would be so bold; others giving the citizens of NC a big ‘well done’.

Sadly though, it is a rumor. Well timed, but a alas, not true. See below:

What the truth is, is that a bill was signed by the Governor, but instead of ‘repeal’ or ‘replace’ CCSS in NC, we got stuck with a REVIEW of it. I’ll spare you the Keystone Cop routine of how the Committee has been treated by not only the Governor, but the legislature, the State Board of Education, etc.

Why is it important to clarify the truth NOW? Because, the Review Committee is about 2 months away from its final report. That’s right, in Dec. 2015, the NC Academic Standards Review Committee  (NC ASRC) will hand over their findings and suggestions for what NC SHOULD do with CCSS. We may, in fact, get to see a total repeal of CCSS. That is what the vast majority of citizens is pulling for. We might see  a tweaked CCSS, or we might get the shaft via a rebrand. Who knows?! In the meantime, however, here is what else is going on to feed the rumor mill…..

Regardless, each of these moves are bad news for NC…and the nation.

I learned of this event from one of the elected legislators of NC this past week. His name? Rep. Craig Horn. He was gloating about the great work NC has done to push digital education in NC and that he’d been a part of it!

Former U.S. Dept. of Education’s Margaret Spellings as the President of UNC.

Here’s a quote from the Raleigh News and Observer, “As UNC president, she’ll oversee the state’s public university system with 17 campuses and 222,000 students, succeeding Tom Ross, 65, who will step down early next year at the board’s request. Why would I point out this as a problem for the nation? University of NC graduates go all over the nation, and the world, for that matter. Think UNC isn’t involved in the CCSS Machine? Think again. WYBI? Tying STEM to CCSS…Again

For my return to “Would You Believe It?!” Wednesdays,  I’ll share with you how the STEM Education Act of 2015  ties back to Common Core Standards. If you’ve followed my blog long enough, you are aware of the numerous times I’ve given you documented evidence of how STEM, STEM to STEAM, are all   aligned with CCSS. (Did you know there’s now a STEM to STREAM? (It stands for Science, Technology, R______, Arts, and Math).

So, What is the STEM Education Act of 2015?

If you haven’t heard of this new federal law, it became such on October 8, 2015. In a nutshell, the law states that STEM must now include computer science. While that sounds perfectly innocent, there’s more to this law than a simple course addition. You wouldn’t need a federal law for that.

Here’s one of the ‘there’s more’ statements: “to support existing STEM education programs at the National Science Foundation.” Now, before I go on, let me clarify that this statement is only a short version, or a summary of the law. If you were to stop there, again, you’d think ”this doesn’t sound bad”.
But, let’s look at the Act itself. Here are the other organizations this extends STEM to. “For purposes of carrying out STEM education activities at the National Science Foundation, the Department of Energy, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, the National Institute of Standards and Technology, and the Environmental Protection Agency.”  These cover STEM in formal education settings, but wait..the new law covers STEM in informal settings as well. As in museums, camps, or anywhere else you can have an informal learning environment. Here’s the direct language, “improve STEM  learning outcomes and increase engagement for K– 12 students, K–12 teachers, and the general public,  including design and testing of the scalability of  models, programs, and other resources.” You’ll also want to read how the Master Teaching Fellows are included. Their website is on you should certainly check out. Why? This agency is not only ‘big’ in education, but its ‘big’ into our communities as well. See their ‘students’ page.

What might be of particular interest is their rather dated pdf on aligning EPA issues with those of educational standards. As they put it, ‘Aligning EE Resources to National and State Curriculum Standards’. In this document (from the days of NCLB), you will find the FCAT assessment, the ASCD (Gates Foundation funded educational company), and more! Please make note the EPA used the 1983 “Nation At Risk” report, and Americans questioning education as reasons to align their resources with education. The PCAST Report:

Rather than continue on with how each of the named federal agencies are tied to CCSS, I want to go back to when I first began to blog about fighting CCSS. After years of in-depth research, and sharing in among a few people also fighting CCSS, I was encouraged to go national with the sharing. Hence, the blog. One of the first articles was the original tie between STEM and Common Core. Since then, I’ve referred to it a lot. Why? Because that PCAST report laid out how the need for a STEM nation would use the, then, new ‘common standards’. Here’s an excerpt you might appreciate, “Nuggets of information include clear bipartisan support in the need for education reform in general (page vi); on page v, increasing federal involvement in education and a presence of public private partnerships is also brought into play. I found it interesting that the P3s were mentioned before the states.”

What About the Computer Science?

Notice in the new law it specifically adds computer science. How is computer science aligned to CCSS now? I found the Computer Science Teachers Association‘s map of each course in computer science and  its place in the CCSS. Get the map,

STEM to STREAM?

Above, you can see I have given you much information about the STEM to STEAM shift. But STREAM??  If we look at the EdWeek article, notice the ‘R’ could stand for ‘religion’, or ‘reading and writing’, etc. Is there a more non-Gates funded perspective to what the ‘R’ subject may be?
The National Writing Project has their opinion, ‘ agencies also realized that adding the arts to STEM is not enough. We also need to add the thinking skills embodied in reading and writing. STEAM may condense into STREAM!’ This project also states how the National Endowment for the Arts, the NSF helped with the ‘A’ in the “STEAM”. Refer back to the above STEM to STEAM articles to see how CCSS aligned both these groups are.

In my researched opinion, it appears the STREAM, just like the other standards based education reforms, needs proper vetting BEFORE they are made into law, but more importantly BEFORE they are EVER introduced into our classrooms!!

FTF: Crossing into CCSS Land

Sometime in the last 2 weeks I promised you, my readers and followers, that I’d get back to looking into where CCSS/CTE hides in plain sight among us. Today, I’ll pick that trail back up. It’s a very important aspect of the CCSS Machine we shouldn’t ignore.

If you’ll recall, I’d just been to an educational conference which was targeting home educators. (see the original article:

) In the original article, I shared with you the grabs for attention marketers use to draw in folks from ALL educational choice avenues. Remember, those avenues could be a private charter, a public-private charter, a virtual school, a private school, a homeschool, or a faith-based school.

While the advertising may not always shout “Common Core” or “Common Core related”, look beyond the slick sales pitch and “Boom!” there you find it. UGH! What’s an anti CCSS Warrior to do? Get informed, show others, and help beat the CCSS Machine’s propaganda. The remainder of today’s article will look at some other curricula sources with CCSS  ties.

Why Would Companies Want to Be Overt?:

This is a question I’ve asked myself a million times. Especially considering how many companies know they can reach those in private education (which, in my current state of residence {NC}, includes home education). I firmly believe it has a two-fold purpose: a) makes the company more profitable b) feeds the lie that somehow those students who aren’t using CCSS tied resources will be left out, fall behind, or not measure up. What a crock of CCSS crap! (pardon my language, please)

“The Critical Thinking Company” (http://www.criticalthinking.com/full-curriculum):

A long-time trusted resource for many who choose to educate outside the traditional public schools. They’ve also thrown their hat into the CCSS ring. Here’s a portion of their statement:
“The skills and concepts taught in our products are the result of our surveys of state and national educational standards. We will continue to avoid any topic in any set of standards that is overtly political. We firmly believe it is not our place to attempt to influence the politics or values of any student. Most Common Core Standards are already found in various state standards, but the list of Common Core Standards is not complete. Since a large number of states (45) have signed on to Common Core Standards, The Critical Thinking Co. will now include Common Core Standards in its broad survey of state and national standards to determine the skills and concepts taught in each grade level subject, but we will not base our products solely on any one set of standards.”

Warrior Warning: Critical thinking is NOT in its purest form in the Common Core Standards. Research and proof of this is available. There are alternatives to Common Core with critical thinking that ARE in a pure form. Don’t be fooled by the CCSS Machine’s weak argument that ‘critical thinking’ via the Standards is worthy.

“Kumon Learning Centers” (http://www.kumon.com/resources/kumon-and-the-common-core/):

Kumon’s website tells you they aren’t necessarily aligning to the CCSS, but they are certainly in the game of augmenting it. See for yourselves with their statement on literature: “With over 50 years of experience, Kumon is internationally benchmarked and contains the elements essential for studying college-level calculus and advanced literary texts such as Shakespeare. The Common Core aims to be internationally benchmarked, has a broad array of learning goals and shares many core competencies such as proficiency in advanced algebra and understanding Shakespeare.

Warrior Warning: Research and proof have shown how Shakespeare are advanced algebra are used in Common Core. 

“Learning By Grace” an Online Homeschool, (http://www.learningbygrace.org/):

This is indeed one of the trickiest brochures I’ve seen. If you aren’t super observant, the highly identifiable logos of PearsonMacGraw-Hill, or, the many others there will go unnoticed..and that’s, I believe, the plan of the those running the CCSS Machine. Here’s a screen shot to show you.

(*Note: Let me pause here to point out that not only are these resources available to home educators, but in some cases these are used in private schools, private charters, or by those in the more traditional education choices as extra curricular resources. When it comes to Common Core, we must investigate the resources carefully!)

Funcation Academy, (www.funcationacademy.com):

This one is very puzzling to me. The flyer I received said absolutely nothing about Common Core. The website has almost no information about the Standards, that is easily seen. The mission statement certainly doesn’t tell you anything that would be identifiable as CCSS related. However, visit the virtual academy and slowly the CCSS begins to appear. For example in the ‘enrichment programs’ you’ll see the “IReady” program. “IReady” is from Curriculum Associates. CA is most definitely CCSS aligned. The “Funcation” site is based in FL, however, the Curriculum Associates page I’m providing as proof of evidence for CCSS alignment features NC (North Carolina). “I am aware that each state has a different curriculum. I personally love CCSS. I was just speaking to why some might be resistant because not all states have figured out their curriculum. I fully understand the difference between the curriculum and standards and I am glad it is working in your state.”

Warrior warning: Are you spotting how purposefully the CCSS is being hidden by these companies?

When I spied the booth for this company, even the slogan used caused me to wonder about the connection to CCSS. “Combining the Science of Reading with the Joy of Learning”.  Once on the website, the suspicions were confirmed. In the K-1st grades, a program of theirs called “Foundations” is 100% aligned to the Common Core. Don’t take my word for it, read theirs, Foundations takes children from non-readers to independent readers over the course of three engaging and multi-sensory levels of language arts instruction. What Could Possibly Be ‘Right’ About Common Core? In today’s post we’ll measure the latest ‘new evidence’ about Common Core in the classroom. Let’s get the Fib-o_Meter fired up!

First, the organization:

ASCD (formerly, The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) The website: http://www.ascd.org

Next, The Book:

The new book that’s got the Fib-o-Meter all fired up? “17,000 Classroom Visits Can’t Be Wrong” by authors John V. Antonetti and James R. Garver, the designers of the Look 2 Learning model of classroom walkthroughs. ASCD is so proud of this book that you can not only buy a copy off the website, you can get a sample download of the book.

Fib-o-Meter’s guess is this is so you, too, as an educator can get started right away ‘doing IT correctly’.  Let’s see what we can find. Now, while I can’t give the download sample, I can point you to where to get it for your own research. Fib-o-Meter will help guide you on some of the biggest CC points. Why, a true PLC shouldn’t shove agendas, it should encourage individuality of the teacher, the respect for him/her to know what would be applicable, and the trust to pull it all off. Page 5 introduces the “TIMSS” (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study). Well, let’s see what the Fib-o-Meter can share. “Total Truth” that this study exists. However, bear in mind it’s part of the U.S. Dept. of Education. SO, objectivity is going to be somewhat skewed in regards to CCSS, don’t you think? (see: https://nces.ed.gov/TIMSS/)

Other Things to Consider:

Fib-o-Meter found these things worth considering:

  • “Colleagues on Call”, considering they influence others, you want to note that the author featured in the Carnegie event is a co-founder of ‘C on C’. Think influence in education isn’t a big deal these days? You may want to consider where ‘C on C’ goes. According to their website, “ongoing partnerships with many schools, districts, service centers, professional organizations, and departments of education.” It is because of groups like this why we need to look further at who’s pushing the districts, the superintendents, and others straight into the CCSS Machine at break-neck speed (see the ‘related’ below). ‘C on C’s’ website: http://www.colleaguesoncall.com/our-work.php

Related to All This, Because They Handle School Leaders:

  • From a post I wrote as a guest on LadyLiberty1885’s blog last year is this excerpt. It shows that influences among leaders in schools, etc.
  • “One such  “group known as NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals). According their website, they have much help in aligning not only honor societies to Common Core, but they have a guide for school counselors. Look down at bit on the page and you’ll see the Hunt Institute, the Council of Chief State School Officers, IDEA Partnership, Council of Great City Schools and others.   • “The CCSS-aligned tests were designed to assess student achievement, and any effort to rush implementation of them that includes using the test data to inform teacher evaluation is ill-conceived. Frustration over an arbitrary deadline to implement tests in a manner for which they were not intended threatens the good that stands to be gained from successful implementation of the CCSS and related assessments. Whatever happens in the news and the political debate, districts are already hard at work implementing these new standards and their related assessments. In order to see how the implementation of the new standards is faring, AASA conducted a survey of superintendents and administrators throughout the country in April, 2014. With 525 responses representing 48 states, the survey provides a glimpse into the planning and implementation of the new standards and assessments as well as the support superintendents are receiving from the state and community. Overall, most superintendents have already begun to implement the new standards, which they see as much more rigorous than previous standards. The new standards will increase students’ critical thinking skills and ensure that they are more prepared for college and the modern workforce than previous standards did. Well, I’m not sure about you, but I think the Fib-o-Meter’s dealt enough “Total Truth” for one day AND exposed enough “Total Fallacy” as well. The original statement the ASCD folks claimed was “17,000 Classrooms Can’t Be Wrong”. I know as long as Common Core is involved, those 17,000 classrooms will be grossly under-served. Right along with the millions of other classrooms left OUT of the book!

I don’t know about you, but being the researcher on Common Core Standards that I’ve become, I get quite a bit of email. So, imagine my surprise when I received the following excerpt, “Join us for this two-day opportunity to connect and collaborate with colleagues from the school, library, museum, and home learning worlds–and anyone interested in reinventing how we think about and facilitate learning.” After this there was the usual kind of details one expects when you get an invitation. Of course, at the bottom of the email are the links to learn more about those who are presenting and have provided resources before hand. One of those links will serve as our Riddle on this “Riddle Me This” Sunday. Will it lead us to Common Core? Let’s find out!

“What IF?…”

The riddle above (at least for the conference I was receiving this invitation to) was completed by the phrase “360 Learning” So the entire ‘riddle’ would read “What IF…? 360 Learning”. The main goal of the conference..ahh, my anti CCSS friends, why according to this invitation, it’s ‘reinventing education’!

The main feeling of the organization appears to be major change makers. Now, in certain situations, changes are fine, BUT with all the current ‘reinventing of education’ going on, I’m not sold that this organization’s any different. So, let’s continue dig into them, shall we?

Their philosophy in the classrooms for K-12: “Effective education relies on student-centered approaches and blurring the lines between learner and educator.”

Their philosophy in the classrooms for post-secondary: “encouraging people to take a more liberal arts approach to life into a movement empowering a global community to share their ideas, create networks of communication, and collaborate in designing actions.”

Pardon me, but does any of this sound the least bit familiar to CCSS?
