Update on “Of Late”

When I wrote “Of Late”, I knew there were several key pieces of evidence to present and somehow tie together. 

Almost immediately after the article hit the social media circuit, I got at least 2 other leads from fellow Warriors, making EVEN more connections to the subject matter in “Of Late”. If you missed that topic, it was all about the how our current U. S. Congress is bowing MORE to a global vent for workforce based education for all ages and all educational choices.

What follows is to be used as tools for every anti Fed Ed Warrior out there. Yes, it’s in-depth. But, it needs to be.

Where I Left Off:

Warriors, I left you with the confirmed evidence that American education is being used as a tool against us for the purpose of reshaping our nation. To continue that re-shaping, look to North Dakota, first.

Heading West:

My fellow Warrior from “The Roughrider State”, noticed that some of the items I shared seemed a bit TOO familiar. She then referred me to Gov. Burgum’s recent Innovation in Education Summit. She laid out some quick facts about the ties some of those presenting ‘expert’ evidence have to the CCSS Machine. She heavily questions how well these people represent the values of the North Dakotians.

I  found Dintersmith involved in another education reform area (which was also another tip from my ND friend). That is the “Most Likely to Succeed” documentary. This was filmed back in 2015 and was considered a hit by the Sundance Film Festival. What the documentary shows is chilling, Warriors. Below is the just over 2 minute trailer. Notice the key CCSS Machine members (Robinson is tied to Pearson, Khan is tied to the Khan Academy and received Gates Foundation funding to switch to CCSS, Common Core State Standards.)

If you’d like to see the “Most Likely to Succeed Learning Sparks” (short videos to spur you into action to help create more ‘innovation’ in your schools), find them here. Warriors, you find out how to ‘hack’ education and more. Look for Linda Darling-Hammond to be among the ‘experts’. Try not to cringe.

Warriors, I haven’t forgotten Dintersmith’s assignment by former President Obama (in the brief bio description above) to the UN. Neither should you.

Time and time again, I’ve shown you fact based research on how the former leader and his administration bent over backwards to help continue the cycle of ‘dumbing down’ American education.
There was the PCAST Report from 2010 where STEM was ushered in as a disguise for the UN’s SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals), thanks to the NSF (National Science Foundation) and many other CCSS groups. There was also ‘innovation’ after ‘innovation’ initiative or some digital push to be foisted on our teachers and students.

Thanks to ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act), those ‘innovation’ and digital overhauls are 100% certain. Has our current President slowed any of this down? Hardly.

Mr. Trump has, in fact, seemingly turned a deaf ear to the CCSS Machine’s technology de facto moves.

Warriors, remember, Dintersmith is a business man, not an educator. The fact sheet for the same White House Report reveals not only a big STEM push, but CTE (Career Tech Education) push, too. Both STEM and CTE are tied up in CCSS, apprenticeships, and the global education scheme of the United Nations.

Getting Back To The “Most Likely”:

Warriors, here’s an almost 30 minute video featuring the producer and lead team member for “Most Likely to Succeed”. You’ll not only see clips from the full documentary, you’ll hear first hand pro CCSS Machine discussion. Once again, Linda Darling-Hammond will surface during this video with her explanation as to how ‘grit’ will help solve the outdated American education. Listen all the way to the end. There is key evidence there.

One of the major concerns of my ND Warrior friend is shared by others in a few other States. The profiling of our high school students. If you’ve heard of “NorthStar” you know what I mean. Part of the ‘retooling’? “Academic interships”..a fancy name for ‘Apprenticeships’!! If you’ll remember, Warriors, most of the “Of Late” article spells out for us the global ties to apprenticeships, higher education, and more. To see School ReTool’s Academic Internship plot, visit here.

Warriors, since most of the apprenticeships and internships are targeting our high schoolers in an attempt to groom them for higher education, we know to be watching the post-secondary reform like a hawk. You also know, I have been helping you do just that for years. EdWeek has an article, published earlier this week which reveals some valid points (even for a pro CCSS/ESSA source).

Point #1: Since the U.S. Secretary DeVos has been in office, she’s tackled much more higher education reform than K-12th grades.
Point #2: There’s a ton more federal control on colleges, community colleges, proprietary (for profit) schools, and all the early college, skill prep programs to unite K-12th to post-secondary education.

Innovation Kills:

Warriors, much of the conversation about all this alignment, reform, and increased innovation leaves out the bare faced fact that innovation actually stunts our minds.
How? Too much of anything is bad for us. As the push to unite the USA to a global education continues; technology and innovation/infrastructure for such will continue to envelope us. 

Released in 2016, is the short You Tube film which depicts a father and child. Conformity to a work/school system is the topic. According to the resource I found highlighting this film, the tone of the writer is that we must change society to join work and education.
Exactly the message we are hearing from the UN, Congress, and our Administration in Washington, D.C. 

The writer stresses that is it our current mindset toward work and school which is killing our student’s minds. In the fact-based research and evidence, it is the CCSS Machine grasp on education which is doing the stunting. NOT parents, not our environment.

I was able to find that one of the producers of “Alike” (Daniel M. Lara) is tied to the Blender Foundation and their 2016 Conference, where he was a featured speaker. Blender Conferences have been an annual event for a while now. Blender’s focus? Arts, technology, animation, and all related subjects. I also found that the Blender Foundation was cited as a resource (page 86) in a STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math) publication from 2015 for IGI Global for use in America. This Google Book is a goldmine of education reform. Chapter 83 is all about embedding pedagogy into NGSS (Next Gen Science Standards), you’ll see how innovation is to be used to target those ‘less academic’ than their peers, you’ll find out STEM is being unleashed on our babies, how ‘blended learning’ and PBLs (Problem Based Learning) is to shift education’s responsibility from teacher to student as a force tactic, future trends for K-20 education (kindergarten to 4 year college degree or similar), service based education (as in grooming the ‘collective, global citizens’), computer games as science teachers, multi-pronged distance education, how the Europeans are educating in these ways, open source lectures (coding classes will tie in here), and, more. (*Note in the beginning pages the number of American Universities.)

Interestingly enough, Betsy DeVos and Ivanka Trump just promoted more girls to STEM in the Smithsonian Museum, 7/25/17. They teamed up back in March 2017 to do much the same. (*Note: Not so funny, one of the UN’s SDGs is promoting women in education, especially STEM.)

Warriors, as you know I’ve shared with you how sold out to the CCSS Machine, NC is. Living here has given me the opportunity to show you things to watch for. Look below. One of the NC legislators is bragging on how ‘we’ will be the first in the nation for state-wide classroom internet access. Remember, ESSA’s mandates in technology include such. Way to align, NC.

Access the “Economist” article and you’ll literally read the beginning words with the name of B.F. Skinner, quickly followed by Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerburg.

Global Models at Home

Warriors Against the Core, you know the fight we have is vast. We know it has taken much sacrifice. We also know the truth, while setting us free, has also caused many to disbelief what we have researched and shared. Some are SO much in disbelief they marginalize us as ‘crazy’ or, my personal favorite, “conspiracy theorists”.

Many have said homeschooling is ‘safe’. Warriors, not only have many others revealed that homeschooling, is in fact, in the cross-hairs of the CCSS Machine, but finding out how safe/not safe education is has been my main motivation since 2009.

I have lost count of how many articles, how much research, and how many hours writing it has taken to help keep you informed about just HOW home education in America is being set up to be entrenched in the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act), the HEA (Higher Education Act), STEM Act (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act), AAI (American Apprenticeship Initiative), and anything remotely connected to all these.

So, it is absolutely NO surprise to find the UN (United Nations) is invading American homeschooling as well.

The AHMUNC (American Homeschool Model United Nations Club):

The Club’s history: The American Homeschool Model United Nations Club (AHMUNC) was founded from a strong heritage in the Classical Homeschool Academy of Princeton Model United Nations Club (CHAPMUN). AHMUNC was founded to bring together homeschoolers from across the United States who are interested in global affairs.  The club: hosts the American Homeschool Model UN Conferencepromotes Model UN to homeschoolers through in-person and virtual events; holds its own crisis and historic simulations; and attends Model UN conferences.”

Interestingly enough, many of our home educated students leave their in-home classrooms headed for colleges, universities, and elsewhere. There are Model UN Clubs at the collegiate level, too. 

Before the Club was CHAPMUN based, it was tied to the  “PMUNC (the Princeton Model United Nations Conference) and ILMUNC (the Ivy League Model United Nations Conference at University of Pennsylvania).”  In 2013,  The ‘North American Invitational Model United Nations (NAIMUN) hosted by Georgetown’ was added.

The Purposed Indoctrination Starts Very Quietly:

The purpose of being Model UN:Model United Nations is a fun and dynamic atmosphere for students to learn about issues from around the world. More than textbook learning, students learn the dynamics of debate and working together to form resolutions.” What you see below is a quote from the former leader of the UN (United Nations).

You might also find it very interesting that the student leader of the PMUNC authored a Nov. 2015 paper as an assignment. Among the topics? The OAS (Organization of the American States) and Smart Cities.

While I haven’t looked into the OAS, I have shared with you in previous posts, how the “Smart Cities” are tied to the CCSS Machine.

If you do not know the roots of the OAS, here is what the author cited in her paper, The Organization of American States was formally established by the 1948 Charter of the Organization of American States in Bogota. However, this meeting of the 21 member states was, in fact, the Ninth International Conference of the American States. The first of these conferences hosted 18 nations and was held in Washington DC from October 1889 to April 1890. These periodic meetings were fundamentally based in the “continentalization” of the Monroe Doctrine, ensuring the collective protection of the Western hemisphere by creating obligations and encouraging cooperation among all states in the region.” (*Note: her footnotes reveal her sources as the OAS itself and the Britannica Encyclopedia.)

What the heck is a UN4MUN Procedure?! In the WFUNA’s words, UN4MUN simulates the United Nations accurately and gives participants an experiential insight into how the UN really functions. This includes a goal of adoption of resolutions by consensus, meaning delegates have negotiated resolutions to a point where they feel it can pass without even needing a vote, which is important in real life to ensure implementation of the resolutions by UN Member States. The collaborative nature of the procedure to focus on every solution presented is in stark contrast to the simple majority voting goals of rival resolutions in traditional Model UNs.”

Back in January of this year (2015) I shared with you all kinds of information on the 2 assessment consortia. All kinds of “Total Truths” were shared..even the technical bulletins detailing what flow the data collected follows. Here’s one of those “Total Truths”,
“Jan. 31, 2012 – “The SMARTER Balanced Assessment Consortium and the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) today announced they have awarded a contract to Pearson to develop a new Technology Readiness Tool to support states as they transition to next-generation assessments. This new open source tool, with the assistance of the State Educational Technology Directors Association (SETDA), will support state education agencies as they work with local education agencies to evaluate and determine needed technology and infrastructure upgrades for the new online assessments to be launched by the two consortia in the 2014-15 school year.” Then a bit further down, “SMARTER Balanced and PARCC both received grants from the federal Race to the Top Assessment Program to work with states to create next-generation, comprehensive assessment systems. The development of the Technology Readiness Tool is one component of their initiatives to establish infrastructure and content for common online assessments.

Tech Thursday: Common Core Military Special

Normally on Thursdays, I treat you to an article about Common Core in post secondary education. Today, however, I’ve got a special article. Collaborative for Student Success has just released a new infograph about Common Core and our U.S. Military students.

What you don’t see below is the staggering number of students set to be in the direct line of fire for receiving CCSS in military schools. Eighty-two thousand (82,000).
Outside those military families, look at those students wishing to get in the military, no matter where they attended high school, a CCSS laden exam awaits (more on that later). As far as not having enough students qualify to to join the military upon graduation from high school? I found one article which suggests the reason isn’t because of education, but because the recruiters don’t need as many service men and women, so they can be a bit more choosy in selecting new members of the armed forces! From 2003:

A document I found on the State Dept.’s website caused me to pose a question. Could the ‘common core curriculum and programs’ developed for the military training be the same as the CCSS of today? I’ve provided a screen shot where you’ll be able to see how some funding was being used. While I’ve not been able to actually see the curriculum, it does leave a question for us.

Why this question is of concern:

While the above may or may not be THE CCSS, it should concern us. Why? If you look at some of the courses taught in the Civilian Military Naval Post Grad School, you’ll see that the United Nations plays a huge role in it; you’ll see that legislators are involved in some of the classes as well. How do I know this? As an example, take a look at the Naval Post Grad School. Knowing that the UN is behind CCSS and has recently (as in yesterday) been pushing for more CCSS globally, we should be very concerned! We should be finding out all we can!!

Army Supports the CCSS:
Read the statement from the head of U.S. Army in full support of CCSS. Hasn’t anyone told him as a defender of the U.S. Constitution, support for the Core is treason?

Dept. of Defense Backs the Core:
Read the Rand Corp. book detailing how the DofD has implemented CCSS into military schools. Again, why are those who took an oath to uphold the Constitution even considering such an act of internal hostility??http://www.rand.org/pubs/occasional_papers/OP384.html

If you aren’t familiar with Rand, here’s their description from their website, “The RAND Corporation is a research organization that develops solutions to public policy challenges to help make communities throughout the world safer and more secure, healthier and more prosperous. RAND is nonprofit, nonpartisan, and committed to the public interest.” What’s ironic is that Rand prides itself on fact based research. How in the bloody heck can you even consider CCSS fact based research when so much has been proven to be totally undeserving of being used?! I can also tell you to read the section on education (begins on page 12) and then refer to the list of donors who supported Rand in 2014. You’ll find the complete list on page 64. The mission of the Collaborative is to support the state-led efforts of State Education Agencies and local education organizations responsible for educating and informing all stakeholders — parents, students, teachers and community leaders — about the new state standards and assessments. There is great support for the Common Core State Standards among educators – from the National Network of State Teachers of the Year, the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics to the National Board for Professional Teaching Standards, the National Education Association and the American Federation of Teachers.”

FTF Tuesday: Meet SHEEO

We all love a great discovery, don’t we? Especially in finding out about how far and wide the net is cast across our nation when it comes to Common Core. Today, you won’t be disappointed. We’re going to be finding out about SHEEO, The States Higher Education Executive Officers Organization. They are regular partners with the CCSSO (Council of Chief State School Officers) and the U.S. Dept. of Education. We know so much already about the USDofEd, CCSSO, we’ll be homing in on this ‘new’ organization.

SHEEO, partner of The CCSSO and others:

(www.sheeo.org) According to the website the organization has been around since 1954. Among its purposes, it serves the member states via their higher educational systems, helping shape education policies, and being a liaison between states and the federal government. Currently, there are 55 members from many different states and Puerto Rico. The Executive President is the Executive Director for the Higher Education System in Alabama, Gregory Fitch. Be sure to discover who represents your state. My SHEEO representative is the President of the University of North Carolina, Thomas Ross. We have 17 campuses across our state. As a parent of a student at one of the UNC member schools, I’m not surprised to discover the link, but it is proof, that none of us are ‘safe’ from the overreach of CCSS. (Common Core State Standards)
*Note: You’ll want to especially look at the SHEEO members from the states which didn’t ‘adopt’ the Common Core, like Alaska or Texas. Why? Because, as I’ve written extensively about, the College and Career Readiness, the Adult Common Core will be in post secondary (aka higher education) institutions. This encompasses community colleges and on-line learning as well.

Partners of SHEEO include the CCSSO (Council of Chief State School Officers), the College and Career Readiness Project, and the National Center for Educational Statistics. There are other partners you’ll want to investigate as well.

Current Projects:

1) College and Career Readiness Partnership (CCRP). Here’s an excerpt that you MUST read and share, “In December 2010, three national education leadership associations—the American Association of State Colleges and Universities (AASCU), the Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO), and the State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO)—joined in a College and Career Readiness Partnership (CCRP) to promote broad implementation of new Common Core State Standards (CCSS) in mathematics and English Language Arts (ELA). Through its combined network of leaders, the CCRP works collaboratively to address those issues that reside at the intersection of the PK-12 and higher education systems. Primarily, this includes addressing what is needed for successful utilization of the CCSS and common assessments of student achievement, both to improve college readiness in PK-12 and to make effective use of these assessments for placement and other decisions in postsecondary education.”    In June 2011, the CCRP staff worked with the Steering Committee to select a first Cohort of seven states—Kentucky, Maine, Massachusetts, Missouri, Oregon, Tennessee, Wisconsin—to work closely with the Partnership through State Leadership Teams on the statewide goal of effective, cross-sector, Common Core implementation.” The following excerpt is from the AASCU’s announcement, “The Phase II timeline is October 2012 – December 2013. Missouri, Oregon, Wisconsin will continue as Cohort 1 of Phase II and five new states will be invited to join as Cohort 2 for Phase II.” According to the American Association of State Colleges and Universities, Lumina Foundation and the Hewlett Foundation fund the entire Project. Both are well known CCSS supporters.  This organization has its own set of CCR initiatives going. To find out more about the CCRP, Defining_College_Career_Readiness Be sure to remember, states which do not ‘adopt’ CCSS, do indeed have ties to this project. For example, Texas has “Project Share”. Also, research the paper’s author. You’ll be glad you did.

2) MSC, Multi State Collaborative to Advance Learning Outcomes Assessment. “The MSC is designed to produce valid data summarizing faculty judgments of students’ own work, and also seeks to aggregate results in a way that allows for benchmarking across institutions and states. The primary goal of the initiative is to provide assessment data that will allow faculty and institution leaders to assess—and improve—the levels of student achievement on a set of cross-cutting outcomes important for all disciplines. With the active support of the State Higher Education Executive Officers Association (SHEEO) and the Association of American Colleges and Universities (AAC&U), nine states—Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Missouri, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Utah—agreed to collaborate in the development and pilot testing of a different model for learning outcomes assessment—a model that is rooted in campus/system collaboration, in authentic student work, and in faculty curriculum development and teaching activity. The project builds on efforts in Massachusetts (as part of its Vision Project) and builds on the AAC&U LEAP initiative through which it developed a common set of rubrics—VALUE Rubrics—to assess the LEAP Essential Learning Outcomes.” Below is a graphic you’ll want to notice in detail, so click to enlarge it.

3) Lumina, SHEEO and your state’s funding:

This project is known as “Moving the Needle”. “The State Higher Education Executive Officers (SHEEO) association supports the Lumina Foundation’s push to reach a 60% college attainment rate in the United States by moving from an access agenda to a focus on both access and success. As the membership organization for the state-level governing and coordinating boards of higher education, SHEEO is focused on state-level policy and the role(s) the states can play to reach the goals of the completion agenda. As such, SHEEO is uniquely positioned to understand and consider the varying state contexts that our members operate within and use this knowledge to evaluate state policy recommendations related to college affordability.”

4) Common Education Data Standards (CEDS), this project works with AIR (Association for Institutional Research), WICHE (Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education) which is funded by the Gates Foundation, and the Postsecondary Electronic Standards Council. FTF Tuesday: ST, SEL, Common Core

It’s “From the Files” Tuesday!! Time for me to share something from the stash of  CCSS downloads I’ve been able to collect. Today’s feature: “ST and SEL”. Huh?! What’s “ST”? What’s “SEL”? “ST stands for ‘systems thinking’. “SEL”, is short for social and emotional learning’. ST and SEL _ Soled Partnership   As my files go, this is not a particularly big one and is skimpy on information. However, if we look closely, even this ‘slim jim’ can reveal much.

Triple-Focus

“Triple Focus” or Triple Whammy?

From the main website, selling the book you see above, the description is as follows:  “Daniel Goleman and Peter Senge provide educators with a rationale for incorporating three core skill sets in the classroom—understanding self, other, and the larger systems within which we operate—and show why these competencies are needed to help students navigate a fast-paced world of increasing distraction and growing interconnectedness.”

Okay, well said, but what exactly does this description mean? Who are these gentlemen and where’s the CCSS connection? Let’s press on.

SEL:

Social and Emotional Learning is a global movement. One portion of its development began as “Social Development Curriculum”. Created by Roger Weissburg, formerly of Yale University’s Psychology Department, now at the University of Illinois, Chicago as “Chief Knowledge Officer”.

‘SDC’ is considered (at least by the authors) to be one of the pioneering pieces of SEL. Their argument is if you behave well in class, you’ll perform better in class…especially at testing time.

Here’s what CASEL (Collaborative for Academic,  Social, and Emotional Learning) says the outcomes for SEL are to be:

“The short-term goals of SEL programs are to one, promote students’ self-awareness, social awareness, relationship and responsible-decision-making skills; and two, improve student attitudes and beliefs about self, others and school.”

CASEL defines academic, social, and emotional skills can be grouped into 5 ‘core clusters’. While you really will want to check out the 5 core clusters, I’ll share just one of them. I think you’ll understand why when you consider where all this is leading up to Common Core. Here’s the exact definition of self management: ‘The ability to regulate one’s emotions, thoughts, and behaviors effectively in different situations. This includes managing stress, controlling impulses, motivating oneself, and setting and working toward achieving personal and academic goals.’  See the rest: http://www.casel.org/social-and-emotional-learning/core-competencies

So how are SEL, CASEL, and the authors connected?

Daniel  Goleman is one of the co-founders of CASEL as well as the co-author of the “Triple Focus”. Also sitting on the Board of CASEL are Mr. Weissburg (from above), Linda Darling-Hammond (a well known pro CC advocate), and the University of Illinois at Chicago is where their research base is held.  As in any collaborative, especially in education today, you’ll find all kinds of groups represented. This one’s no different. Among the different schools and youth groups(including Special Olympics) guiding CASEL, the following pro-CCSS companies or charitable trusts are involved:

Institute of Education Sciences, a direct arm of the U.S. Dept. of Education..absolutely no need to wonder where CCSS support is there. You’ll want to read their connection to CASEL: http://www.casel.org/funders/institute-of-education-sciences

Noyce Foundation, “In 2013, CASEL received its first-ever grant from the Noyce Foundation for a collaboration with the Charles A. Dana Center at the University of Texas at Austin. The Dana Center focuses on mathematics and science education with an emphasis on strategies for improving student engagement, motivation, persistence, and achievement. The CASEL and Dana Center project focuses on the intersection between SEL and the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics.”

From the thin file I’ve shared, if you open it, scroll down to the bottom, you’ll see in red, “Deeper Learning and the Common Core”. That’s where we are headed next. It’s a post from 2013. Here’s the link: http://soledpartnership.org/450/

The post tells you the project actually began in 2012. Is funded in part by the Hewlett Foundation (we heard of their CC funding in other posts). If you read a bit further, you’ll see ‘related articles’. Here’s an excerpt from one of those about the beauty of CC and systems thinking. “The Common Core Deeper Learning project draws connections between the rigorous learning of the CCSS and the use of system thinking tools and habits. The nearly perfect match of the CC ELA Standards for Reading and the systems thinking…” The excerpt is from a 2014 article.

ST:

Systems Thinking was ‘discovered’ back in 1956 by an MIT Professor Jay Forrester as a component to better understanding new ideas in social settings, much like we do in understanding fields like engineering. Why engineering? Because preciseness is needed. According to the Thinking Net (website: http://www.thinking.net/Systems_Thinking/OverviewSTarticle.pdf), where I found an easy to understand explanation of ST, states that traditionally, we break our thinking down into small pieces. Systems thinking doesn’t do that. You’ll notice, if you access the pdf above, it is using crops as an example. Supplant that example with CCSS and our students.

Contrast that example of ST with the one from Waters Foundation, which helps fund the CC Project we’ve been looking into.
“Systems thinking utilizes habits, tools and concepts to develop an understanding of the interdependent structures of dynamic systems. When individuals have a better understanding of systems, they are better able to identify the leverage points that lead to desired outcomes.”

Now, consider the two. Can you imagine why kids are struggling with the CCSS so much? It is developmentally unsound to expect a younger student to see an entire system. They have to break things down in smaller pieces! We don’t begin our students with books, then expect them to DIGRESS from there into paragraphs, sentences, words,  and letters, do we? NO!! We begin with letters, move UP to words, sentences, paragraphs, and then books.

Closing thought:

If you go to vote today, please consider the candidates, especially for school boards. Are they supportive of CCSS? If so, don’t allow them into office. If they are on the fence, share this information with them, as well as all the other information you have about the inappropriate development component of Common Core.

Sic’ ‘Em Saturday: Creatively Turning the USA Common

How many of us have, by now, seen the image below? How do you think it’s connected to Common Core? DO you think they are connected? I wasn’t so sure, but now I know!

“Creative Commons”:

If you’re like me, you have seen these. With so much “CC” stuff out there, I was under the impression the “CC” you see above in some way denoted “Common Core”. However, I was wrong. It stands for “Creative Commons”, as in “Creative Commons Licenses. The non-profit company got is start in 2001. Supposedly to help everyone share their creative projects freely. The images you see above ARE code. Each of them denotes the level of control being expressed by the person, company, or group holding the CC License. While there are tons of tutorials out there telling you what each symbol means, I’m not diving into that. As you know by now, I’m looking behind the obvious.

Gates Foundation:

Yes, the Gates Foundation is an ardent supporter of the CC Licensing. So much so that the Foundation has awarded Creative Commons with $8,755,145.00 in grants for ‘college readiness’ and ‘postsecondary success’ since 2011. (see: http://www.gatesfoundation.org/How-We-Work/Quick-Links/Grants-Database#q/k=creative%20commons)

2011’s “postsecondary success” grant’s purpose: to provide federal grantees support for quality development of interactive curricula, open licensing, technical interoperability, collaboration between like projects, and widespread adoption of open curricula by community colleges and states.’ We know, from past posts here and elsewhere that community colleges are aligned or are being aligned to Common Core. Here in NC, all 58 of our community colleges are aligned with the Standards. (I’ve wrote that up about a month ago) 

2011’s ‘college readiness’ grant’s purpose: to partner in the development of the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative, to help identify learning resources that complement Common Core State Standards.’ This is globally, including America.

2013’s ‘college readiness grant purpose: ‘general operations’ for not only the US, but the global community.

Center for Public Domain:

Housed at Duke University (see: http://web.law.duke.edu/cspd/), known as the Center for the Study of Public Domain which began in 2002, according to their website.
Duke University has been the recipient of many Gates Foundation grants, including ‘postsecondary success’ via developing & implementing a MOOC (massive online open course) MOOCs impact students everywhere.

Learning Resource Metadata Initiative:

From the LRMI’s ‘about’ website page, the entire initiative was started to help Common Core Standards along. The exact wording, “This initiative started with the creation of tags in accordance with the Common Core Standards.” What companies are behind the LRMI?
Creative Commons and the Association of Educational Publishers.

The following excerpt is regarding locating CCSS resources on-line, “That’s where the Learning Resource Metadata Initiative (LRMI) comes in. Launched in June 2011 and co-led by the Association of Educational Publishers and Creative Commons, the LRMI is working to create and implement a standard tagging specification for learning resources that enables alignment to learning standards, such as the Common Core. The LRMI’s work extends the effort by Schema.org (a consortium involving search engine giants Microsoft Bing, Google, Yahoo!, and Yandex) to establish a standard method of tagging Web pages across the Internet.” 

LRMI is also being funded by the Gates Foundation and the Hewlett Foundation. The Initiative began in 2011. Common Core aligning was to be completed by 2012. One last huge thing you need to know about LRMI, it’s ‘stewardship’ is under an American based non-profit group, Dublin Core Metadata Initiative. (DCMI), which is a project of the Association for Information Science  and Technology. However, Korea and Japan are also involved in housing the Initiative’s website and registry. This DCMI has links to International Standards and American National Standards. (To find these, go to: http://dublincore.org/specifications/ and click on ‘Dublin Core Metadata Element Set’.
