FTF: PreK Research: CCSS, CBE, and a Host of Others

As anti CCSS Warriors, we’ve heard of educational research on the K-12 level, the higher education level, but did you know there’s an educational research group for those in pre-kindergarten? I first wrote about the National Institute for Early Education Research and their Zero to Three involvement:

While that article will name the same groups below, this time I’m taking a much closer look at each of the lesser known groups involvement into CCSS aligned preschool. What is interesting, is the NIEER is housed in Rutgers University.

 

NIEER’s Mission:

From the website’s ‘mission statement’, The National Institute for Early Education Research (NIEER) conducts and communicates research to support high-quality, effective early childhood education for all young children. Such education enhances their physical, cognitive, and social development, and subsequent success in school and later life.”

As part of the Vision/MIssion of NIEER
NIEER also leads the Center on Enhancing Early Learning Outcomes (CEELO), one of 22 comprehensive centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education’s Office of Elementary and Secondary Education to strengthen the capacity of State Education Agencies to lead sustained improvements in early learning opportunities and outcomes.”


Before we get to HOW the NIEER influences early education, I think you might be interested in what groups fund the National Institute for Early Education Research.

From the website the following pro CCSS groups fund the research. Most of these are well known supporters. The ones you may not recognize have links you can follow to learn more:

The Fund for New Jersey, see their 4/2015 pdf document’s section 3 which details NJ education: NJKids (one of the key components? Extended preK to full day classes)
You can also find the Fund for NJ has granted the Education Law Center money to further strengthen public schools and extend preschools to full days. Find that evidence:

Before we leave the Fund for NJ and its grantee, the Ed Law Center, you might find it interesting that one of the Ed Law Center’s initiatives is for the “Great Schools of NJ”. If you didn’t know it, “Great Schools” is very much CCSS aligned/funded. How do I know? After all the “Great Schools of NJ” is a non-profit organization. The Schumann Fund for New Jersey, before we delve into their ties, I wanted you to see the screen shot below. The latest grant is to an early education program named “Brick”.
“Brick” stands for “Building Responsible Intelligent Creative Kids”.

There are other grants this Foundation you’ll want to investigate. As well. Especially their support of the ‘Grantmakers for Education’ which is tied to  the Fordham Institute, as well as others. In terms of human capital development, the Foundation has been supporting work to identify how schools can become more productive by, for example, increasing the quality of the teacher workforce or adopting more effective curricula.  Because success in the contemporary economy requires individuals to acquire education and training beyond high school, the Foundation is building a portfolio of projects on post-secondary education.”
Among the past grant recipients are the pro CCSS groups: Brookings Institute and  Harvard University (well documented ties to CCSS)

Back to NIEER:

I found buried in their publications and research this document which was presented in the ‘resources’ section of their newsletter detailing the re-authorization of the ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act). This document was published by the National Association of Elementary School Principals (NAESP). The topic? “Making PreK to 3rd Grade Assessments Matter”. You won’t believe what you read. It is full of CBE (competency based education). CBE is a huge portion of not only CCSS, but CTE (Career Tech Education).

You really should look at the entire July 2015 newsletter. Why? You’ll find a global investment summit where the topic was early childhood education; you’ll find a federal budget for early childhood learning; you can find studies, and links galore.

As far as the NIEER state by state yearbook (the original screen shot of this article), you’ll want to investigate that, too. CCSS is listed in the glossary of abbreviations. You’ll also see Title One funding and TANF funding (Temporary Assistance for Needy Families). FOM Friday: CCSS “Can’t Be Wrong”?!

What Could Possibly Be ‘Right’ About Common Core? In today’s post we’ll measure the latest ‘new evidence’ about Common Core in the classroom. Let’s get the Fib-o_Meter fired up!

First, the organization:

ASCD (formerly, The Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development) The website: http://www.ascd.org

“Total Truth”, each state has an ASCD Affiliate. So do several countries across the globe. The purpose? “Common values and goals”. (see: http://www.ascd.org/about-ascd/Affiliates/Directory/Affiliate-Directory.aspx )

Next, The Book:

The new book that’s got the Fib-o-Meter all fired up? “17,000 Classroom Visits Can’t Be Wrong” by authors John V. Antonetti and James R. Garver, the designers of the Look 2 Learning model of classroom walkthroughs. ASCD is so proud of this book that you can not only buy a copy off the website, you can get a sample download of the book.

Fib-o-Meter’s guess is this is so you, too, as an educator can get started right away ‘doing IT correctly’.  Let’s see what we can find. Now, while I can’t give the download sample, I can point you to where to get it for your own research. Fib-o-Meter will help guide you on some of the biggest CC points. From Page 4: there was talk about ‘benchmarks’ being used as school effectiveness tool. “Total Fallacy” when you consider the entire ‘benchmarked CCSS’ myth has been busted open long ago. Page 4 also shares about “PLCs” (professional learning communities) guiding thoughts..Hhmm..when you consider the multitude of PLC workshops expressly for CCSS, I guess the guiding thoughts would be all about Common Core. (for example, see: http://www.schoolimprovement.com/how-to-make-friends-and-influence-people-with-the-common-core-standards/ ) If this isn’t enough for you, check out the agenda behind those 21st Century Community Learning Centers, which are also helping guide thought, blur lines, and so much more. (see: http://www.p21.org/). “Total Fallacy” for this entire topic! Why, a true PLC shouldn’t shove agendas, it should encourage individuality of the teacher, the respect for him/her to know what would be applicable, and the trust to pull it all off. You can’t have any of that when you are constricted by the CCSS. (see: https://whatiscommoncore.wordpress.com/tag/teachers-against-common-core/ )

Page 5 introduces the “TIMSS” (Trends in International Mathematics and Science Study). Well, let’s see what the Fib-o-Meter can share. “Total Truth” that this study exists. However, bear in mind it’s part of the U.S. Dept. of Education. SO, objectivity is going to be somewhat skewed in regards to CCSS, don’t you think? (see: https://nces.ed.gov/TIMSS/)
“Total Fallacy” that we should even try to use the TIMSS in regards to CCSS, as revealed in this article by a guest for Pioneer Institute. (see: http://pioneerinstitute.org/news/why-common-cores-math-standards-dont-measure-up-by-guest-blogger-zeev-wurman/)

Other Things to Consider:

Fib-o-Meter found these things worth considering:

  • “Colleagues on Call”, considering they influence others, you want to note that the author featured in the Carnegie event is a co-founder of ‘C on C’. Think influence in education isn’t a big deal these days? You may want to consider where ‘C on C’ goes. According to their website, “ongoing partnerships with many schools, districts, service centers, professional organizations, and departments of education.” It is because of groups like this why we need to look further at who’s pushing the districts, the superintendents, and others straight into the CCSS Machine at break-neck speed (see the ‘related’ below). ‘C on C’s’ website: http://www.colleaguesoncall.com/our-work.php

Related to All This, Because They Handle School Leaders:

  • From a post I wrote as a guest on LadyLiberty1885’s blog last year is this excerpt. It shows that influences among leaders in schools, etc.
  • “One such  “group known as NASSP (National Association of Secondary School Principals). According their website, they have much help in aligning not only honor societies to Common Core, but they have a guide for school counselors. Look down at bit on the page and you’ll see the Hunt Institute, the Council of Chief State School Officers, IDEA Partnership, Council of Great City Schools and others.   • To find out some “Total Truths and Fallacies” (I’m sure you can correctly match the truths/fallacies to the boldly highlighted words) from the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), see this excerpt below (the entire document: AASA_CCSS_Report):
  • “The CCSS-aligned tests were designed to assess student achievement, and any effort to rush implementation of them that includes using the test data to inform teacher evaluation is ill-conceived. Frustration over an arbitrary deadline to implement tests in a manner for which they were not intended threatens the good that stands to be gained from successful implementation of the CCSS and related assessments. Whatever happens in the news and the political debate, districts are already hard at work implementing these new standards and their related assessments. In order to see how the implementation of the new standards is faring, AASA conducted a survey of superintendents and administrators throughout the country in April, 2014. With 525 responses representing 48 states, the survey provides a glimpse into the planning and implementation of the new standards and assessments as well as the support superintendents are receiving from the state and community. Overall, most superintendents have already begun to implement the new standards, which they see as much more rigorous than previous standards. The new standards will increase students’ critical thinking skills and ensure that they are more prepared for college and the modern workforce than previous standards did. School and district staff are viewed as prepared and engaged in implementation of the new standards.”

Closing:

Well, I’m not sure about you, but I think the Fib-o-Meter’s dealt enough “Total Truth” for one day AND exposed enough “Total Fallacy” as well. The original statement the ASCD folks claimed was “17,000 Classrooms Can’t Be Wrong”. I know as long as Common Core is involved, those 17,000 classrooms will be grossly under-served. Right along with the millions of other classrooms left OUT of the book!

As far as those ‘Classroom Walk Throughs’ and how they relate to Common Core?..that’s another article unto itself.

FOM Friday Update: Truths and Lies of CCSS

As you’ve come to depend on, it’s Friday, which means we put Common Core to the Fib-o-Meter Test!

Today’s update features one of my very first posts called “Not On My Watch”. (see: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/09/01/not-on-my-watch/) As I’ve done all this week, I’m updating pertinent information in an effort to help us fortify our anti-CCSS arsenals. It’s going to be a bumpy year, I think, so what better time to start sharpening our swords. Here’s an excerpt from the original,
“Of the 10 following statements, there are 6 truths and 4 lies about Common Core Standards. See if you can correctly identify each.

  • 1) Common Core controls what is taught, for the most part.
  • 2) Common Core is part of a federal mandate.
  • 3) Common Core, to remain in place and continue on in each state will need to be funded by taxpayers.
  • 4) Testing and assessment costs will need to increase under Common Core.
  • 5) Data mined information stays within the state the information is gathered in.
  • 6) Common Core is copyrighted and cannot be altered.
  • 7) My child will be better prepared with Common Core in their education or job training.
  • 8) Funding for schools is held captive by Common Core Standards.
  • 9) “Internationally benchmarked” studies can be found on the Common Core Standards website.
  • 10) All opponents of Common Core are from the same political party.”

(Before we move to any updates, I challenge you to give this to a supporter of the CCSS or better yet, a school board member, elected official, or all of them. Would they know?)

Updates you can use:

If you’ve not visited the Common Core Standards website it awhile, it’s a good thing to see what they’ve updated on the website. For example, they, too have “Myth vs. Fact” category (I think Fib-o-Meter‘s much more realistic, however) that’s had a bit of a makeover since I last used some of the information to create the above True or False ‘quiz’. Take for instance, this statement, “Federal funds have never and will never be used to support the development or governance of the Common Core or any future revisions of the standards.” It is statements like these that the “Fib-o-Meter” was created for!! “Total Fallacy” for this one, Common Core website! I guess you’d like us to forget those RttT funds that saddled the states with CCSS in the first place, or the Perkins Act makeover which includes Common Core aligned adult education, the Career Pathways not only aligned to CCSS, but to the Departments of Education, Labor, and Health/Human Services masterful Workforce Quality Data Initiative!

Here’s another one made for the “Fib-o_Meter”, “The standards are not curricula and do not mandate the use of any particular curriculum.” Again, “Total Fallacy”!! Maybe the copyright owners (CCSSO and NGA) think we don’t notice all those “Common Core” stamps on the homework assignments. Maybe they think we don’t know about all the tremendous amounts of Common Core Curriculum that have not only been produced, marketed, sold, and aligned, BUT available almost everywhere you turn..even the Dollar Stores! I’m sure you know a teacher in a school with CCSS, ask them how much of their own material they get to use. The ones who’ve spoken to me have shared that there’s NO TIME to deviate from the CCSS aligned, assigned material!

More hype, thanks CCSS lovers!

New since I first wrote about all this is the Council for Great City Schools (another CCSS lover) Blog post titled,
“Parents Support the Core Despite the Drama” (see: http://www.commoncoreworks.org/site/default.aspx?PageType=3&DomainID=83&ModuleInstanceID=364&ViewID=047E6BE3-6D87-4130-8424-D8E4E9ED6C2A&RenderLoc=0&FlexDataID=1592&PageID=239) The main concept of the post is that parents need to hear from those in schools as to WHY CCSS is GOOD for their children. The organization even conducted a poll to back up the love from parents towards the Core. No where in the article does it state how MANY parents were polled, only percentages. Well, how credible can the findings be? Seriously, think about it! If I only poll a small number, let’s use 4 people, and I ask them the same question, my results, when percentages are used hides HOW many. Seventy-five percent results will always impress until you factor in that means 3 out of 4 parents agreed. But I don’t want us to get lost in the numbers around their poll. The base fact is Council for Great City Schools wants parents to embrace how great CCSS is. U-G-H!

In my original post I stated something to the effect that we are our own best children’s advocate. I’ll trust you to read the rest of the original to see how I challenged you in this fight AGAINST CCSS. I can’t leave you today without giving you a visual Fib-o-Meter ‘quiz’. See this below that I found in social media that’s worthy of not only a “Total Fallacy”, but “Total Failure” as well.
