Anti Fed Ed Warriors: Heads Up!

This is an urgent call to the Anti Fed Ed Warriors out there. While the chatter heads are going on about the reasons why or why not it’s a good thing the U.S. Government is ‘shut down’, one thing’s for certain. As far as the educational overreach, it’s ‘game on, as usual’.

To what am I referring? S 615 (the U.S. Senate’s latest attempt to re-authorize and/or to amend the 1965 HEA, Higher Education Act). S 615 is being sponsored by the CO Senator, Michael Bennet. The Bill also has Sen. Marco Rubio’s (FL) backing.

phone call2

The Urgent Call:

Warriors, I’m calling your attention to S 615 as it’s the 2nd Senate HELP hearing for the Higher Education Innovation Act. It is scheduled to go on as planned for Jan. 25th, 2018, according those answering the phones at Congress right now. That’s the day after tomorrow! Appearing as witnesses: Dr. Joe May (TX), Dr. Deborah Bushway (MN), Mrs. Donna Linderman (NY), Mr. Michael Larsson (MA), and, Dr. Barbara Brittingham (MA). This hearing begins at 10 AM (EST). It will be archived.

So, what’s S 615’s name? The Higher Education Innovation Act!! (*Congress is stuck on a pattern, Warriors. Look at some of the recent legislation turned laws. WIOA, for instance: Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act; the ESSA’s copious amount of language devoted to ‘innovating’ education.

1524025_768426799875328_9203653907048883076_o
In the years since CCSS was forced upon our nation, Congress still hasn’t learned that slapping ‘innovation’ on the same old reform doesn’t work!

January 25th is the same day Senate HELP will nominate a new Assistant Education Secretary* (Frank Brogan) for K-12th grades. This hearing begins at 2:30 PM (EST) and will be archived as well.

(*Note: the highlighted links for both hearings will take you directly to the U.S. Senate HELP website. You’ll need to refresh the link for the ‘live feed’.)

*Brogan is a close buddy of Jeb Bush’s, at least according to the Tampa Bay Times. As we know, Warriors, Bush’s Foundation for Excellence in Education is the ‘chief fallacy maker’ behind “National School Choice Week”. So, if we’re wondering about Pres. Trump’s commitment to end Common Core, we really should be protesting this nomination in double time.
******************************************************

If you, like me, missed the first hearing on S 615 (held 1/18/18), you can find the archive here. This hearing discussed the supposed transparency associated with student debt and how Americans will be able to afford higher education. You’ll also want to access the Senate HELP Chairman’s 1/18/18 press release. You’ll see that according to Sen. Alexander (who does acknowledge federal education presence, but doesn’t apologize for it), that the background for S 615 is actually 4 and 1/2 years old and has had a whopping 18 bi-partisan meetings. As usual, Warriors, we’ve not heard of ANY of these meetings, nor been invited as serious ‘stakeholders’ to the table.

In the 1st archived hearing, no doubt you’ll hear lots about the need for data mining/tracking to be part of the ‘simplification’. You’ll also be ‘treated’ to lots of FASFA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) rhetoric, too.

As other anti CCSS Warriors have shown us, the FAFSA has become a weapon against our students. FAFSA, also can be tied to a data breach, as well as the SETRA and FERPA legislation which Congress appears to be hell-bent on for a national data base. This type of data base would have Americans in schools, or not, tracked like never before.
(SETRA and FERPA stand for Strengthening Education Through Research Act and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.)

Needed Background Context For You:

Warriors, if you’ve followed me long on this blog, or heard me speak out numerous times, you know I’ve been warning you for quite a while about the HEA being the last link in the chain of total birth to adult CCSS (Common Core State Standards) alignment. You also know that there are several others who have been just as diligent in warning our nation.

You may also know I’ve been able to prove how the current form of HEA is embedded in the K-12th grade law. It’s mainly embedded by Career Tech Education (CTE). Why? Simply put, the 2014 passage of WIOA (Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act) used CTE as the adult version of CCSS in order to tie jobs to education.

For more context about HEA and ‘innovation’, let me point you to at least 2 reasons WHY Congress is uniting itself with the CCSS Machine:

10/6
What’s “10/6”?
The ’10’ refers to the Agenda Points the U.S. Dept. of Education has had in place for some time. The ‘6’ refers to the Agenda Points the U.S. Dept. of Labor has had in place for some time.

essagoal
Much like ESSA, HEA’s re-authorization will continue the ‘worker’ mindset, not the academic mindset to needed to be a great and free nation!

10/6 was woven into WIOA, then ESSA. It was woven into the current HEA version (2008) and will be woven into the newer version of the HEA.

How? By CCSS/CTE/STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and, Math)/CCR (College and Career Readiness); or as ESSA called it, “Challenging State Academic Standards” are precisely where 10/6 intersect in each existing law concerning ‘education’ from a federal level. The intersection even has a name, “Career Pathways”.
Warriors, on Page 14 of S 615, the intersection of all this is visible:

S615p14.jpg

Closing:

Like the big blue picture above, Congress is working overtime to try to convince Americans that ‘innovation’ will solve ALL our educational woes. What they miss consistently is how MUCH ‘innovation’ is HARMING our students of all ages!

For your further contextual base, my most recent previously published HEA articles:
a) CBE (competency based education) is also woven throughout WIOA, ESSA, and, HEA. This will lay out how it’s a pattern set forth by the UN (United Nations).
b) Congress’s sense about education is definitely NOT academic-minded. This look from mid 2017 will lay out a plethora of workforce-based-education-career-tracks Bills.
c) This June 2017 article of mine traces the vast amount of UN-directed data tracking higher education (as also seen in Pre-K to 12th grades) has in place already.

Lastly, the House of Representatives passed its version of HEA on 12/13/17. It’s called the PROSPER Act. It too, is a trap.

5 Days

Anti CCSS/Fed Ed Warriors,

In the COMING 5 days, you can probably ‘bet the farm’ that the U.S. Congress will continue their part in the CCSS Machine’s grinding down of our nation. What about your State’s legislative body? If they are like where I live, they have already ‘left the building’. However, they too, were ‘busy beavers’ before they left.

Congress is rushing. A couple of big reasons:

A) 2016’s fiscal year ends. That means, October 1, 2016 begins the fiscal year 2017. That means all those items which were in the series of articles I wrote about the 2017 Fed Ed Budget nightmares will become a reality. Fiscal 2017 also brings us ever closer to the full impacts of the Every Student Succeeds Act, ESSA.
If you want the series:
a) https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/02/11/fed-ed-2017-are-you-ready/
b) https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/02/12/fed-ed-budget-for-teachersleaders/
c) https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/02/13/big-bucks-for-post-secondary-ed/

B) The 2016 Elections are the OTHER big push to wrap up the overreach activities…for now.

My anti CCSS Warrior voice howls!

Congress, You are NOT doing the job you are elected to do TODAY. You are NOT truly listening to your voters. You are NOT creating legislation or voting on it as IF it’s the LAST piece of business you ever do in D.C.! You are an ELECTED person with the PRIVILEGE of service, NOT the GUARANTEE of job placement! You have forgotten overreach in education is ILLEGAL! So why should anyone send you back to do it all again?!

horace-126-96-09
During the past 5 days, not every one of my articles has been accessible.  So, in the confidence you can use these fact based research articles to REMIND Congress of ITS true place, I offer:

1) Congress Loves CTE (Career Tech Education)
Use this to remind Congress, sold out members to the lobbyists for the CCSS Machine is UNACCEPTABLE!
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/08/09/congress-loves-cte/

**After the elections, H5587 (Strengthening Career Tech Education for the 21st Century) should shift over to the Senate, as it passed the House, 405-5. As of this writing, there is no hearing scheduled by the Senate HELP Committee to move on the sister bill (which by the way was postponed in the past 5 days), S3271, Workforce Advance Act. BOTH HR5587 and S3271 are in the “Congress Loves CTE”. I checked the calendars for both the Senate and House and saw no mention of either of these education bills.

2) Related to the HR5587 and S3271, is  S3190, Strengthening Our Rural Health Care Workforce in the 21st Century.  Use this article that you will not ACCEPT one more piece of legislation which cements a healthcare law no one took the time to read.
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/08/16/ctes-health-country/

Also related, and not appearing on the calendars for the upcoming 5 days in D.C. is the extremely egregious bill of all, S3174, or the Ladder Act. Any bill related to workforce which uses the opening word of “Leveling”, you know is going to mean MORE federal control.  Use this article to send the message to Congress that ONE more Executive Branch (independent) Council is not only UNACCEPTABLE, we WILL not fund it! https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/08/18/americas-obsession/

In the past 5 days, the U.S. Congress also saw the advancement of the H5963 (Supporting Youth Opportunity and Preventing Delinquency Act of 2016). The House passed it by 382-29. I covered this bill in “The Chain Gang Cometh”. This was the one article which caused the most uproar. Here’s the link:
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2016/09/13/the-chain-gang-cometh/
Use this article to tell Congress, NO! Absolutely no support or opportunity is worth what is being considered as appropriate for our children!

**Since ‘Chain Gang’:
a) I have heard from several concerned parents who are already seeing some of the same moves mentioned in the article happening now in their children’s schools.
b)  I’ve also heard from my dear fellow anti CCSS Warrior, Dr. Karen Effrem, who did plunge deeper into the Bill than I could. She was addressing my deep concerns over the language of the Bill.
She found that the those chemical agents are only mentioned one time in the entire Bill, in the definitions portion of the Bill. Use of and/or limits for use are not in the Bill, just the definitions.
“Incapacitate” is part of the Bill’s definition language for ‘chemical agents’. It doesn’t appear anywhere else.
Dr. Effrem also shared this with me, “However, the bill also adds another new definition called “dangerous practice,” which is “an act, procedure, or program that creates an unreasonable risk of physical injury, pain, or psychological harm to a juvenile subjected to the act, procedure, or program.”
After this, Dr. Effrem also said it looks as is the Bill is to minimize use of dangerous practices via several mandates. She directed me to page 44. However, at the end of page 44, you’ll see this, “including by developing effective behavior management techniques;” (so, in essence, not so many restraints, but more behavior management). On page 52, you’ll see the training efforts and reforms have produced reduction/elimination of dangerous practices.

Both Dr. Effrem and I agree, even with what we both found, this Bill has some definite areas we WARRIORS must watch, ask about, and be ready to protect. Why? Refer to the parental reactions this article stirred. Dr. Effrem suggested we contact the main sponsor, Rep. Curbelo. We both realize time is short, but with definitions for chemical agents in a Bill for our children and the gray areas for who uses, when used, and IF they are to be continued is a HUGE problem. Oh, and Curbelo’s in the midst of a re-election campaign.

In the period between Congress’s departure and whomever returns, Warriors, we should keep the amount of parental concern in our forefronts. Then, add the following concerns around H5963:

a) the U.S. Dept. of Ed’s definition for ‘at-risk’ youth encompass several more student groups than those who are low-income or at-risk/troubled.
b) younger and younger students are being identified as ‘at-risk’ or ‘troubled’ (an example: the number of kindergartners who are being suspended for simply being child-like in their actions).
c) to be identified as ‘at-risk’ or ‘troubled’ there are mental health assessments, behavior management or interventions which are increasingly being placed on the already overburdened teachers.

If you’d like to know the side effects of use for the chemical agents in the Bill:

#KnowBeforeYouVote

2016elect

Warriors, one of the best weapons we have this election season is PRESSURE. The sold out leaders (from our school boards to the White House) have been identified. If these CCSS Machine members haven’t been identified by now, it is only right they should be now. Why? Our vote is our voice! If our stance against federal overreach in education is solid, so should our voice! To say we stand against CCSS and ALL that goes with it, then elect or re-elect those who will continue its chokehold on our nation, will be a signal that we’re not as effective as we can be in the War Against the Core.

So, I invite you to use the #KnowBeforeYouVote to share what you know about any candidate who’s running. For example, here’s a screen shot plainly showing names, the CCSS Machine member organization and some researched truth. If you like and support ANY candidate who’s not being forthright about education, confront them. If the candidate is using one too many canned educratic words, confront them! How you use your pressure as weapon is up to you. I, for one, will use as much evidence which is truthful, as I can.

knowbefore

So, what will happen in the next 120 hours? Plenty. What will we, the Warriors do between now and the election? Roar!

Timing is Everything

Due 8/1: All public comments on the Proposed ESSA Regulations.
To learn why the Proposed Regulations should be protested:
This researched guide from the United States Parents Involved in Education (US PIE):

From the hidden truths of the Proposed ESSA Regulations, US PIE found 5 general areas of concern:
a) Dr. King’s (Sec. of Ed) powers increased
b) State Plans and mandates proving less State Control
c) Mandates for States which taxpayers will fund
d) Data mining (will encompass entire communities)
e) Student measuring (assessments)

There is NO time to loose!

RMT Sunday: Beware of ‘Project AWARE’?!

Today’s “Riddle Me This” is geared toward finding the connecting ties between the federal overreach in education, the students, families, CCSS, 21st Century Community Centers, and more.

“Now is the Time” Initiative:

So as not to confuse you, the full title for Project AWARE is “Now is the Time” Project AWARE. I make a point to share this so that when you go to conduct a general search you can get straight to the initiative that is special to education. There are many “Project Aware” groups already out there. Each with a different purpose, but not for what we focus on today.

The U.S. federal agency the Project is housed in is the SAMHSA (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Administration) Website: http://www.samhsa.gov/grants/grant-announcements/sm-14-018, according to this particular page of SAMHSA, the entire goal is,
“The purpose of the NITT-AWARE-SEA Cooperative Agreement program is to build and expand the capacity of State Educational Agencies to increase awareness of mental health issues among school-aged youth, provide training for school personnel and other adults who interact with school-aged youth to detect and respond to mental health issues in children and young adults, and connect children, youth, and families who may have behavioral health issues with appropriate services. The intent of NITT-AWARE-SEA is to develop a comprehensive, coordinated, and integrated program for advancing wellness and resilience in educational settings for school-aged youth.” Now, before we go a bit further..ask yourselves..with all the meltdowns our students are having as a result of Common Core, with all the efforts to cut out parents, who will be the ones determining what is and isn’t a behavior issue? What guidelines are used in determining ‘resilience’?

The pdf document behind it all is from the White House and titled “Now is the Time: The President’s Plan to Protect our Children and Communities from Gun Violence”. Released in 2013 just after Sandy Hook (see: wh_now_is_the_time_full) From within the document, not only will data collection be a key component, but the Centers for Disease Control will be awarded research funds to study the ties between video games, multimedia images and violence, that is IF Congress gives the okay for $10 million to do so. Then, there’s this aspect, Doctors and other health care providers also need to be able to ask about firearms in their patients’ homes and safe storage of those firearms, especially if their patients show signs of certain mental illnesses or if they have a young child or mentally ill family member at home. Some have incorrectly claimed that language in the Affordable Care Act prohibits doctors from asking their patients about guns and gun safety.”

Let me pause us here to ask a couple of questions. Have we not seen an increase in the violation of privacy not only at schools but also at the doctor’s office? If the agenda for the 21st Century Community Learning Centers continues on, who’s to say which group of people will be consider the ‘other health care providers’? What about the increase in digital dependency for learning? Who know what images are seen by the students.

Another key component to the “Now is the Time” is the presence of even more school resource personnel (including mental health professionals  AND counselors trained to offer a nurturing environment. You may be asking, well, what’s so questionable about this? What am I trying to get you to see? Well, through the scope of CCSS, the agenda that goes with it, two things. First, the nurturing of a child is a parental responsibility NOT a school’s. Second, with all the CCSS training, purposeful alignment school counselors are receiving, I have to wonder about the presence of MORE personnel..especially in the name of ‘safety’s sake’. Now, please do NOT misunderstand me. I realize there are children who need extra support and that’s great, however, we shouldn’t be adding non-school related services to a school environment. But, then again when you are trying to align a community to the ‘cradle to career’ or even ‘cradle to grave’ mindset,  you gotta do what you gotta do. (If you’ve not read my published post about school guidance counselors being aligned to CCSS, please see: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/10/10/fridays-post-breaking-news-you-need-to-know/)

This report continues on with all kinds of federal agencies, federal funds, and federal plans to ensure how schools will be safe. Why are the local districts, states, and citizens marginalized? The states are sovereign, NOT the federal government! You’ll need to read the report to see which federal level agencies are a part of this.

According to this report, mental health patients need to be identified early. I’m all for that, as the parent of two bipolar students, I know mental health is important. However, it’s the WAY the students are to be treated, and by whom, I’m most concerned about. Why? Read this excerpt, “Project AWARE includes $15 million for training for teachers and other adults who interact with youth to detect and respond to mental illness in children and young adults.” The phrase coined was “Mental Health First Aid” and teachers would be the respondents. Are you kidding me? I wouldn’t want my bipolar children diagnosed or treated for their issues by a teacher, I expect a trained, licensed bipolar specialist to help them. The teachers should be teaching! Teachers can’t teach what they need to because CCSS limits them, but they can become mental health care givers?! How will this happen? We’ll have to see, but I can tell you the report shares not long after teachers becoming first aid givers for mental health that MORE money to train MORE health care personnel is in the plan as well. It even shares how the Secretaries of Education and Health/Human Services are the ones guiding the conversations. Seriously?! Finally, on the subject of mental health in our young people, the Affordable Health Care will expand who’s covered, how much is covered in mental health services.

safe_image

Back to Project AWARE:

If you go back to the website about the Grant announcements for Project AWARE, you’ll see more data mining, sharing..all in the name of schools, education, and a well balanced student. “It can assist by expanding state capacity to collect and utilize population data in order to develop and implement science informed policies and programs in schools and communities to ensure comprehensive approaches to create safe and supportive schools that address the mental health needs of young people. This will also include broadening efforts to coordinate and integrate across service systems including education, mental health, juvenile justice and law enforcement and supporting the development of approaches to integrate state and local comprehensive plans for infrastructure, services, and supports focused on the well-being and healthy development of children, youth, and young adults.” You’ll also see an expansion from not just a federal level, but state levels to be authorized to train lay people, have LEAs receive more money, authority! How is this being ushered in? Those ESEA documents! See the excerpt below:

“State Educational Agencies (SEAs) as defined by section 9101(41) of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act; and applicants for this grant announcement are required to also apply for the ED SEA School Climate Transformation grant.”

So, just what does the “AWARE” mean in Project AWARE? ‘Advancing Wellness and Resilience in Education’

How does my school district get this money? Through your state board of education. Here’s an example, I found when I typed in ‘Project AWARE Common Core’ in my search bar. An announcement from Illinois. You’ll need to click on the picture below to see the press release from 10/14:

You won't see CCSS in the press release, but search the IL State Board of Education and you'll find it.
You won’t see CCSS in the press release, but search the IL State Board of Education and you’ll find it.

Another example? From MN, a blog post that features anti CC warrior Dr. Karen Effrem discussing Project AWARE, CCSS, and students. See: http://ppjg.me/2014/07/09/minnesota-schools-common-core-and-mental-health/

Yet another example comes from the CCHR (Citizens Commission on Human Rights, St. Louis, MO) back in 2013, “As a result of psychiatric and psychological intervention in schools, harmful behaviorist programs and psychotropic (mind-altering) drugs now decimate our schools. These programs have trampled on the rights and roles of parents and have provided society with rising crime, drug abuse and suicide rates. Contact your local, state and federal representatives and let them know what you think about turning our schools into mental health clinics and turning our children into mental health patients.” The group encourages you to check out their pdf about the dangers of schools being turned into mental health clinics. (see: http://www.cchrstl.org/education.shtml#) Here’s just a small quote from the introduction to the PDF, “According to educators, academic, knowledge–based curricula has been jettisoned in favor of psychology that places the emotions and belief systems above educational outcomes.”

Here’s what the U.S. Dept of Ed had to say: http://www.ed.gov/news/press-releases/us-department-education-invests-more-70-million-improve-school-climate-and-keep-

While you’re at the Dept of Ed website, type in the full name of AWARE (advancing wellness and resilience in education in their search bar and just look at the descriptors you get in the results). You’ll see the goal is more about transforming what a school offers, what it does than how well it educates.

Related:

Since one of the goals to an aligned community is turning your school into a 21st Century Community Learning Center. Project AWARE is just one key to doing this. Here’s a related resource for you to also consider that will help transform your school into a 21CCLC. http://www.expandinglearning.org/sites/default/files/em_articles/2_upgradingafterschool.pdf

Closing:

So, my fellow anti CCSS friends, did we solve the riddle today? Should we be watchful of Project AWARE? Absolutely! I hope you’ve found some useful information to help you uncover where Project AWARE is in your school’s plan. Have a story about the Project you’d like to share? Please do!! We must help each other gain awareness about the back doors groups, funds, and those with a CCSS, ‘cradle to grave’ mindset have.

FOM Friday: Christian Colleges, Exempt from Common Core..NOT!

It's Friday, you know what that means! Time to measure what's truth, what's fallacy/fib or what's in between.
It’s Friday, you know what that means! Time to measure what’s truth, what’s fallacy/fib or what’s in between.

How many times have we heard that ONLY public schools have Common Core Standards? If you’re like me, you’ve heard this out and out fallacy TOO many times. However, how many folks have you met who still think Christian universities are exempt from the Standards? Yes, you read correctly, Christian universities. Many of us anti CCSS bloggers have covered the ways in which Common Core has been inserted into K-12 Christian schools, but yet, many don’t stop to realize, the post secondary world of education for those who are Christian is just as full of Adult CC.

First on the Fib-o-Meter, Concordia University:

Originally founded over 100 years ago by the Lutherans in Missouri, today CU has 3 physical campuses and on-line classes as well. All campuses, on-line or on-site are committed to the highest educational standards, care, compassion, and a Christian viewpoint. Hmmm….then why are there master degrees available for Common Core Standards, Career Tech Education, STEM? (see below)

What a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive.
What a tangled web we weave, when we practice to deceive.

For this undeniable proof, rating this on the Fib-o-Meter will be tough. Why? No statement saying ‘we don’t support Common Core’ is on the website I accessed, yet they are clearly teaching how to teach Common Core. Thankfully, Dr. Karen Effrem with the Education Liberty Watch was present at a California meeting recently. Dr. Effrem was speaking against Common Core, one of the supporters? Dr. Doug Grove of Concordia University. Dr. Grove is the Assistant Provost for Adult, On-line, and Graduate courses. (see the minutes from the Orange County School Board Meeting: http://www.ocde.us/Board/Documents/11.12.14%20BOARD%20AGENDA%20PACKET.pdf, scroll down to page 16) To access Dr. Effrem’s report: http://edlibertywatch.org/2014/11/elws-dr-effrem-participates-in-major-debate-on-common-core-with-national-experts/

So, NOW we can run this through the Fib-o-Meter much easier. Sorry, Concordia, you teach “Total Fallacy” with Common Core aligned classes. Concordia’s website address, should you want to look deeper, http://education.cu-portland.edu/

Oh, I almost forgot, another “Total Fallacy” for offering each new student a laptop ready to data mine! (visit the website to see what I mean)

Next up, Regent University:

Here’s another big named Christian based university. Let’s see what we can find out about their adherence to CCSS, if any. Website: http://www.regent.edu/ Their tag line, “Christian Leadership to Change the World”.

Well, one of the first clues they are Common Core friendly is the offer to Veterans. Now, do not misunderstand me, I love our Veterans! However, because of the federal funding attached to their higher education, I already know the university will HAVE to be CCSS aligned. Under the newer version of the Perkins Act is the first alignment, then under the new Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act (for more about the military financial aid and how it’s tied to the U.S. Dept. of Ed, http://www.military.com/education/money-for-school/federal-student-aid.html)

Then there are the CCSS aligned required textbooks for education majors,

1. Teaching Common Core Math Standards, Author: Muchala, Publisher: Jossey-Bass
Ed: 1st, 2012, Nook ISBN: 9781118237281; Hard Copy ISBN: 9781118108567
2. Learning to Love Math, Author: Willis, Publisher: Association for Supervision &
Curriculum Development, Ed: 1st, 2010, Nook ISBN: 9781416612285; Hard Copy ISBN: 9781416610366

There are even more books in the education major that will more than qualify. Pearson Higher Ed is used for teaching literacy. There are books on social emotional learning, too. If you want to access the entire textbook list, http://www.regent.edu/acad/schedu/pdfs/textbooksFA14.pdf

Sorry, Regent, if this is your idea of Christian leadership, I’d have to pass. For misleading vets, “Total Fallacy” (not to mention disgraceful). For implanting CCSS into future teachers, ‘boo’..and a “Total Fallacy”.

What if my Christian College is part of a larger denomination’s umbrella?

Great question! For example, the Southern Baptist Convention has a very large co-op/partnerships with colleges and universities in 19 states (and not just in the South). So how does a set up like this avoid Common Core, if at all possible? First, let’s consider their statement of relationship status. Right off the bat, the Convention’s listing tells you it is a courtesy to have all this information in one location. The next part is a bit tricky, so here’s a direct excerpt, ” With the exception of the five theological colleges associated with our SBC seminaries, the Southern Baptist Convention has no direct connection with any of these institutions. It provides no funding. It elects no trustees. Each institution is related to one of our partnering Baptist state conventions.”  After this distinction comes the money part. There’s a co-op agreement between the colleges/universities, the churches AND the Convention. Any scholarship or financial funding must come from each separate school as per their requirements. So, you have to search each and every school’s website to find out if there are tied to Perkins, or any other U.S. Dept. of Ed. funding. Then, you’d need to see if they participate in early college (formerly known by dual enrollment), International Baccalaureate or Advanced Placement programs (both of which are tied to Common Core). To rate each of the 19 states on the Fib-o-Meter at once wouldn’t be feasible for this unique situation. So, while the Convention itself has tried to distance itself from CCSS, each of the colleges/universities may not. Fib-o-Meter will have to rate this as “Fallacy”. Even more CC alignment:

Bob Jones University had Barbara J. Rooks (one of the co-authors for “Elements of Literature” published by Bob Jones Press) give a CC implementation presentation. Here’s the workshop description, “Common Core Standards are garnering attention in education. What are they? How can they help teachers and administrators? This workshop offers tips on implementing these standards into the English classroom.” The University offers no other information. (to see an up close look at the BJU stance, here’s a link to Lady Liberty 1885’s Guest post from July 2014, http://ladyliberty1885.com/2014/07/07/guest-post-common-core-in-charters-private-homeschools/) There’s quite a bit about private Christian schools from the K-12 perspective. For being a fence rider (this is someone who straddles a fence much like a horse and expects to not get splinters), “Fallacy” on the Fib-o-Meter.

Liberty University’s faculty blog writer Dr. Ackerman shared her thoughts back in 2013 that are quite sadly supporting the CCSS, but you need to see the way in which the support is written. The assumption is just because some are Christian, their CC should be better than other’s CC. To see the post, http://www.liberty.edu/index.cfm?PID=9720&blogpid=20067&id=697181 Sorry, Dr. A, but this is “Total Fallacy”. For using Pearson Publisher Higher Ed textbooks in Math (which will be CC aligned), “Total Fallacy”, this may fit in with your version of the Christian way, but I’m not interested. Oh, before I forget, “Total Fallacy” for STEM goes to your school as well.

Brigham Young University (BYU), in their on-line newsletter, http://universe.byu.edu/2014/11/11/to-teachers-common-core-is-not-such-a-bad-apple1/ will get a “Total Fallacy” for many reasons, but read this excerpt, “Tim Morrison, an associate chair of BYU’s Department of Teacher Education, said he believes the consistency of Common Core makes it better for children in a mobile society.” There are other comments like that (but I want you to see for yourselves).

Loyola University Maryland (http://www.loyola.edu/) is truly into Common Core Standards. Not only do they teach their undergrads, grad students how to be CCSS aligned, they help host pro CCSS Forums. Their associates include the Fordham Institute, as well. “Total Fallacy” for each of these. Learn about their most recent CCSS Forum, http://www.loyola.edu/news/2014/0821-leading-minds-common-core For more about their other CCSS projects, http://www.loyola.edu/search-results.aspx?&q=common%20core%20standards

Notre Dame (specifically their Institute for Educational Research), http://iei.nd.edu/, “Total Fallacy” ratings for STEM Academy, AP Training Incentives (which increase college/career readiness), and for its partnership with the U.S. Dept. of Ed (see: http://iei.nd.edu/our-initiatives/education-research/)

Closing:

Before we part for today, please know the following:

1) I have nothing against the Christian higher education students

2) I have no bone to pick with the idea of Christian based higher education

3) There are hundreds more Christian higher education institutions I’ve not covered. Why these? Because I wanted a cross section of the more well known schools for you to see just how far CCSS has infiltrated our society.

4) I am deeply troubled that those who profess to honor the Lord AND are in charge of educating others would want to have their students adhere to godliness in certain ways, yet uphold Standards based not only on lies, but that seek to discredit the Christians themselves.
