Monday Musings: Is There a Better Way?

We've got the sight set for wiping out CCSS. Let's set our sights on CTE, too!
We’ve got the sight set for wiping out CCSS. Let’s set our sights on CTE, too!

Anti CCSS Warriors, we’ve made progress in the battle for wiping out CCSS, we’re on the move to now include the adult version, CTE. After going on another ‘undercover’ research trip into the ‘world of education’ this weekend, I came away with a few muse worthy findings. These, of course, lead to questions we Warriors need to consider in this extremely important ‘War Against the Core’!

What I Discovered:

1) A definite shift in what is being highlighted at educational conventions, conferences from academics to services.
2) A distinct ‘don’t ask, don’t tell’ aura. I saw this in action with one educational service where the parents, teachers, and students were drawn in like flies. The service is 100% aligned to CCSS, CTE, yet THAT fact was no where in sight. What was? Colorful prizes, discounts for signing up right away, and how much smarter your child would be by learning to read with a computer leading the way.
3) Since I’ve attended many, many educational conventions, conferences, symposiums, curriculum fairs, and the like, I know where the focus has been and is now shifting. I’ve been able to meet and interact with educators of ALL types, in all the different choices out there. Of all the folks I met with on this particular journey, less than 1 dozen noticed what I did…that educating our students in academics is being changed right before our eyes.
4) Laws in different states are also being updated to reflect the need for more accrediting from those schools which have, up to now, been just fine in graduating students. An example? Changing the scholarship requirements from ‘open to all graduating seniors’ to ‘open to graduating seniors with an accredited diploma’. For some schools, like homeschools, this will continue to be a warning sign of more control, more alignment to the ‘more traditional system’.

What’s The Solution?

In a recent conversation with a education professor who’s also an author and holds a doctoral degree, we were sharing how it’s been great to have so much information point to what’s wrong about Common Core and it’s ‘cousin’, Career and Technical Education, but who’s got a solution to offer as an alternative? This is a great question for us to not only ponder, but to get busy on. Our legislators are being bamboozled by the giant CCSS Machine, the Business RoundTable, the Chambers of Commerce on the “Who, When, Where, Why, and How” of CCSS/CTE. Very few of these elected men and women have seen the light that we, the anti CCSS Warriors have.

I’ve shared with you, as have others opposed to the CCSS Machine, there has been a credible solution offered by a dedicated group of NC citizens for the K-12 educational system. The “NC Plan” has been publicized nation wide as a worthy, CCSS free framework.
Freedom Project Education has purposed itself to be 100% CCSS free in its K-12 virtual school. However, as the professor and I were sharing in our conversation, we MUST have an alternative for the Post-Secondary CCSS/CTE overhaul. If we don’t all the K-12 CCSS free moves will be absolutely negated. The assessments, the data mining, and other K-12 CCSS tools are also in post-secondary education. We’d like to see those go away, too.

The CCSS Machine will be 100% successful in claiming all the post-secondary students it possibly can IF we, the anti CCSS Warriors, do not focus on this huge, yet under-discussed issue. Remember, post-secondary education encompasses EVERY citizen in this nation, who chooses to return to the classroom. EVERY taxpayer’s hard earned dollar is going to help fund (as it already has been doing) the CCSS/CTE alignment.

There are others out there just as purposed to freeing the post-secondary educational world of CCSS/CTE. There are a few institutions NOT CCSS/CTE aligned. However, with the rewriting of the ESEA of 1965 (Elementary and Secondary Education Act), the recent passages of BOTH the HR5 and S1177 (Student Success Act/Every Child Achieves Act, respectively), AND the up-coming bills for “College Promise” Act, updated “Higher Education” Act, any school receiving any type of federal education (and in most cases state education) dollars, will have NO choice in remaining free of the CCSS/CTE agenda. In short, all of the above cement the bridge between K-12 and post-secondary education.

We know, now, how the post-secondary educational world has been helpful in creating and continuing Common Core. We know, now, how post-secondary institutions are being turned into a grooming parlor for more CCSS/CTE drones. (examples of this can be found in my older articles about the colleges where education majors are being taught to teach only CCSS/CTE)

We know, without the shadow of a doubt our time to have a CCSS/CTE free America is short.

I urge you to contact Sen. Mike Lee, who is seeking folks like us to address the post-secondary educational dilemma.  His current higher education proposal(known as the HERO Act) is a start. While, from the summary, reads like another way to streamline education, it’s an avenue for feedback, we’ve not had before. By us providing people of influence with the credible facts and research we have about the CCSS Machine in post-secondary education, I think we can make a big difference. I’ve reached out to the Senator. I hope you, as my comrades, will do the same.

If not Sen. Lee, then someone similar whom you know will help us fight the CCSS Machine. There are at least 2 other Senators, concerned about the reformation of higher education, see: http://www.goacta.org/the_forum/senators_embrace_higher_ed_reform_agenda

Remember, we have the Machine in our sights. Let’s hit the bullseye, anti CCSS Warriors!

Finally, if you know of any other legislators, state or federal level, who join us as opposed to the CCSS Machine, please leave a comment to this article sharing his or her name and contact information.  We’ve got to work together to provide an alternative to a CCSS/CTE aligned education, no matter at what level it is.

RMT: Don’t Look Now, NC! CCSS/CTE Overload!

The CCSS Machine's rolling over every state in its path to do WHATEVER it can to align our students!
The CCSS Machine’s rolling over every state in its path to do WHATEVER it can to align our students!

While all our heads were turned toward D.C. this past week, our states kept rolling on in their CCSS/CTE ways. The ‘riddle’ today (since it is “Riddle Me This” Sunday) is “What did NC get while while ESEA re-vamping was happening in Washington, D.C.?” In short, the answer is ‘CCSS/CTE Overload’! As always, if it’s going on in one state, it’s going on in the rest of them.

NC DPI’s Announcement:

First, on 7/9/15, how NC’s proficiency rate is one of the best in the USA. Here’s an excerpt from Dr. Atkinson, NC’s State Education Superintendent (AND the president of the Chief Council of State School Officers; 1/2 owner of the CCSS copyright), ““North Carolina has set high expectations for our students,” said State Superintendent June Atkinson. “We know that today’s competitive economy requires more in order for our students to be well-prepared for success. The challenge before us is to ensure that our schools are equipped and staffed to help students reach these goals.””

Then, a Newsletter Highlight:

As we’ve noticed in all things CCSS related, the timing is precise. While one CCSS related activity is going on, others to support it are either in the works or just appearing. Case in point, NC’s ‘new’ Academic and Digital Learning upgrade. An avid reader of my blog and fellow anti CC warrior sent me a tip and requested I look into this. Here’s the tip, “I get the various DPI updates , this was in the July Web highlights.” Then, my contact shared what you see below:

4. Academic and Digital Learning Launches New Website Academic and Digital Learning recently launched a new website that provides easy access to its divisions that include: Career and Technical Education, Digital Teaching and Learning, Exceptional Children, Home Base, K-12 Standards, Curriculum and Instruction, and the NC Virtual Public School. To learn more about Academic and Digital Learning and how it prepares students beyond graduation for work, further education and citizenship, please visit  http://www.ncpublicschools.org/academic-digital-learning/.” (*NOTE: NC’s Virtual Schools are accessible by all educational choices, including homeschool students)

So, How “Recent” is Recent, NC DPI?

In trying to access the rest of the July 2015 news items from NC DPI, I stumbled upon a January 2015 newsletter where some of the ground work for this appears to have been announced. What do I mean? Here’s a ‘sample’,

Coming in July 2015!  Logging into Home Base with the IAM Service The IAM Service will be replacing the “PowerSchool Login” after the 2014/2015 End of Year processing, July 6. With this change, all North Carolina K12 students and employees will login to Home Base applications using their NCEdCloud username and password. The accounts are currently available and LEAs and Charter Schools can begin providing students and employees their accounts at any time. Employees can follow the “Claim Account” process described in For Teachers and Staff on the NCEdCloud IAM Website (ncedcloud.mcnc.org). Students’ accounts will be issued by their teachers, who have access to their students’ usernames and initial passwords. Parents will continue to use the PowerSchool Parent Portal for access to their student’s information. Identity and Access Management (IAM) is one of the NCEdCloud initiatives for the K12 community of North Carolina and provides LEAs and Charter Schools a tool to help manage the authentication and authorization needs of students, employees and guests (and eventually parents) in accessing cloudbased resources. It provides self service capabilities to all end users, and delegated administrator capabilities to LEA and Charter School technology leadership. The actual service is being provided by Identity Automation and the IAM infrastructure is hosted in Amazon’s AWS, a robust environment providing expandable capacity as well as increased stability. “

What’s more is that in the same Jan. 2015 newsletter, an effective digital teaching course was being offered (course began in Feb. 2015). Here’s the screen shot, the website to access the Jan. 2015 entire newsletter is included.

From That July 2015 Website Address:

From the website provided in the tip my anti CCSS buddy sent, I was able to find all kinds of information about Career Tech Education, Common Core, and more.
First, the website address: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/academic-digital-learning/

On the website’s main page, you’ll read this ‘lovely’ information, “This area of the agency encompasses Standards, Curriculum and Instruction, Digital Teaching and Learning, Career and Technical Education, Exceptional Children and the NC Virtual Public School. Area functions address all State Board goals but focus primarily on preparing students beyond graduation for work, further education and citizenship” Among the major tools to cause the preparation> NC’s Standard Course of Study (code name for CCSS) and Home Base (data mining). Assessments will be in BOTH Standard Study/Home Base.

If you’d like to see the 2009 NC, Career and Technical Education’s Strategy and thus, makeover to align to CCSS, strategic-plan

If you’ve followed my blog very long, you know I’ve provided scores of facts, documents, and other related information into NC’s total CCSS Machine alignment. My warriors, NC is far from the lone participant in this, as you can well attest to. I know it’s in every one of our states of residence. It has to be. The workforce/economy components of the reshaping of America are to encompass ALL 50 states, territories, and military posts.

Supporting all this alignment? “Programs that support digital teaching and learning are reinforced by legislation and policies for implementation of legislation.” Source: NC DPI’s Digital Teaching and Learning Policy page. (http://www.ncpublicschools.org/dtl/policy/ )

One of the main laws requiring adherence? The ESEA (Elementary and Secondary Education Act of 1965), which is currently in a state of re-vamping. Which leads us back to the current events in D.C. ESEA is ‘boss’ in every state of the United States.! What other laws support the alignment of America? NC’s Digital Teaching and Learning page, offers links to all the federal agencies involved: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/dtl/policy/regulations/ (*Note: NC’s DPI didn’t provide the state legislation, only the federal level)

One last note, the funding to help support the digital teaching and learning? E-rate! (see: http://www.ncpublicschools.org/dtl/resources/funding/) Related resource you can use, my previously published look into what some of those ‘pesky fees’ on your phone bill actually do in regards to all the digital education: http://preventcommoncore.com/?p=1223

May Day, May Day! CCSS/CTE Urgent News!!

Beginning today, I'll be featuring, all weekend, CCSS/CTE's united efforts to dumb down our students..at every level of education, not just K-12!
Beginning today, I’ll be featuring, all weekend, CCSS/CTE’s united efforts to dumb down our students..at every level of education, not just K-12!

Usually, on Fridays,  you anti CCSS Warriors would see the “Fib-o-Meter” appear. Believe me, today’s article will be FULL of CCSS/CTE Fibs! However, since there’s an urgency to getting as much information to you BEFORE the Senate resumes their education overhaul marathon, I’m devoting the entire weekend’s article to giving you ‘ammo’ (aka ‘information’) that we MUST share immediately to stop the audacious propaganda that’s literally streaming out of Washington, D.C. at the moment. It’s worse than ‘stuck on stupid’, it’s an attempt to bombard us with lies wrapped in ‘good legislation’ to promote the CCSS Machine’s total domination of American education!

We’ve seen the way the House of Representatives listened. We’ve fired back, not so nicely, as a result. We’re not afraid. We must use our pro-active effort  as a tool to be effective with the HR5, the ECAA, the HEA, and the most recent educational push: “College Promise Act”. (see the above screen shot)

The CPA, College Promise Act:

This Act is NOT the HEA (Higher Education Act). CPA is a totally separate bill designed to push the free 2 years of Community College. While that may sound great, this concept, has been researched, written about, and shared by many of the true nature of the legislation: Educational coercion!
 {*Note:  The HEA will be popping up soon. How soon, I don’t know. However, with the researched proof that the HR5, S1177, and HEA are all designed to be a seamless transition from grade to grade (preK to college), it will be heard in Congress. One report I’ve previously shared stated that Sen. Alexander is hoping it will be not only presented in session, but passed before the next big Congress recess. That’s a dire warning we MUST heed!}

A mere two days ago, a press release was shared stating senators from Wisconsin, Virginia, and New Jersey introduced the College Promise Act. The press release also shared that Arne Duncan was also included in a media conference call promoting the dire need for this legislation. By now, you may know that the angle being used by the CCSS Machine to create such legislation is equity in education for all students, especially low-income ones. I’ve no problem with making college more affordable, however, as I’ve stated time and time again, community colleges have already been CCSS aligned. With that stealthy move, community colleges became part of the CCSS/CTE track.

Press release: http://www.baldwin.senate.gov/press-releases/baldwin-americas-college-promise-act-to-make-higher-education-more-accessible-and-affordable

Other key points:
1) Community colleges, under the grasp of CCSS/CTE, while local, will not have local control!

2) Community colleges don’t only impact recent graduates from ALL high school choices, but adults returning to the classrooms after, maybe, many years. This means anyone will be slammed with the CCSS/CTE alignment!
3) ‘Free’ will NOT be free! How many times have we lived this out? In order for ‘free’ community college for some, it means others will have something taken away!
4) Just as in the K-12 bills, teachers and other educational staff personnel in post-secondary institutions will need assessing, re-education to handle all the behavioral aspects of the CCSS/CTE legislative parameters.

Another press release by the AACC (American Association of Community Colleges) you’ll need: http://www.aacc.nche.edu/Advocacy/Pages/acpa2015.aspx

A must read anti CCSS warrior article tying a lot of the information main stream media HASN’T told you about some of the movement towards aligned post secondary education:
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/04/14/ftf-chea-cte-ccss-and-america/

Senators aren’t the only ones pushing the CCSS/CTE agenda. The Representatives are as well.

Look for other Reps, like VIrginia Foxx who fully support Workforce. Workforce that's chock full of CCSS/CTE!
Look for other Reps, like VIrginia Foxx who fully support Workforce. Workforce that’s chock full of CCSS/CTE!

Other propaganda which surfaced yesterday during the D.C. education marathon:

As we know, ECAA and HR5 weave CCSS/CTE all throughout themselves to align for a trained Workforce.
As we know, ECAA and HR5 weave CCSS/CTE all throughout themselves to align for a trained Workforce.
Oh, there's lots more hype about CPA out there.
Oh, there’s lots more hype about CPA out there.

One resource the pro CCSS/CTE side is saying is a ‘great’ thing (which is a HUGE clue to how it’s exactly NOT a great thing):
http://www.clasp.org/issues/postsecondary/in-focus/americas-college-promise-act-new-legislation-supporting-our-nations-students-workforce-and-economy

In a brief statement of fact, why this is bad, is that every student loan will see more federal funds, less state funds (example: for every $3.00 the federal gov’t loans, the states loan $1.00). Translated: more federal control; watered down degrees with CCSS/CTE alignment, and a horrid amount of student debt.

I’ve covered CLASP’s overreach before now, They’re not just pumped about the College Promise Act, but the HEA, too!

Closing:

I know we, the anti CCSS warriors are being flooded at the moment. Congress is presently, very active. As tired as we may be, we MUSTN’T let up the pressure directed toward D.C.!!
Yes, many of us anti CCSS warriors are sharing lots of information to combat the rhetoric we’ve come to identify and despise. Yes, it may make your head spin. However, my fellow warriors, we must consider what’s at stake. Is it worth the dizzying pace? Absolutely! We MUST press on! We MUST be the thorn in Congress’s side. We MUST fight for our students!!

Super Sunday: For the Guy Anti CCSS Warriors

Warrior Dads, like our Warrior Moms, are SO important to our battle for education sans the CCSS Machine.
Warrior Dads, like our Warrior Moms, are SO important to our battle for education sans the CCSS Machine.

Greetings on this Sunday. The “Riddle Me This” usual Sunday article is taking a short time out to give a BIG hat tip to all our Dad anti CCSS warriors out there. We “Warriors Against the CCSS Machine” are even more effective when we have Dads covering our every move. Likewise, they are even more effective when we Moms cover them. Join me in saying “Thanks” to these true gentlemen….

Dads Against Common Core:

This Facebook page is about 1,000 folks strong. From their photo album it appears the group’s page began in 2013. If you’re a Dad fighting this awful mess and are interested in joining DACC, here’s the link to their page.

Dads in Other Groups:

There are MANY other Dads out there fighting for their spouses, children, and communities in an effort to be free of anything Common Core related. Too many groups to mention by each of their names, but I know you know where these Dads are.

To the ones who daily write to keep our cause visible, I say ‘Keep going!’, we need you.

To the Dads who march, protest, or otherwise make their voices heard in public, I say ‘Tremendous job!’, thank you for shouting out.

To the Dads who are the behind the scenes warriors, I say ‘You rock!’, there is NO way some of us Mom warriors could do what we do in the fight if you weren’t standing there. These would be the Dads like my husband. He is against the CCSS Machine, he works for an institution embroiled in the midst of the post-secondary world of CCSS/CTE (Career and Technical Education). In spite of the ties, he stays there to make a quiet stand against all that mocks our nation. He is supportive in the fact that day in and day out,  I have what I need to serve you. No, you won’t see him in public as much as I am; no you won’t hear him speak out much; no, he won’t be writing my articles. But know this, if I’m seen; if I’m writing; or if I’m speaking out, it is because he’s got my back.
These types of Dads, in my opinion, are the unsung ‘Captains’ in our anti CCSS ‘army’.

Thanks, Dads. America needs you. Stay strong, stay healthy, continue to be a student’s hero, and most of all stay anti CCSS!

You are so worth fighting for, my fellow anti CCSS warriors. Let's continue to do this for our students!
You are so worth fighting for, my fellow anti CCSS warriors. Let’s continue to do this for our students!

Sic’ ‘Em Saturday: CCSS Menu, Your Choice

applemenu

Warriors against Common Core, make no mistake, Common Core isn’t only going to be set in stone for the next 7 years IF the HR5 re-authorized bill headed up by Sen. Alexander is passed; it will also be set in stone IF the HEA re-authorized bill headed up by Sen. Alexander is passed, as well!!

Many warnings have been given over the past months–by others who’ve researched both bills and in my articles. I’ve researched the HEA one especially.

While HR5 is set to impact K-12 students, teachers, and their schools;  HEA’s Common Core tentacles will grasp all citizens no matter what educational choice they had in the past. This means if you were homeschooled, attended a private charter, or private faith-based school for K-12: Common Core via its adult version of Career and Technical Education (or Career Pathways, Career Clusters, American Apprenticeship Initiative, Workforce Training) will be there. This means if you just graduated from a public charter school, a public school of any kind, your introduction to Career and Technical Education (or the other names above) has already begun! This means that if  you’re hold a job which requires you to further your education via post-secondary education, Common Core will ensnare you, too! This means if you’re going back to school to begin a new chapter of life, Common Core is your ‘welcome back’ to class!

Both bills, HR5 and HEA contain data mining, high stakes assessments which encompass not only students, but the teachers, professors, and/or instructors.

Both bills are being sold to America as improvements for education. HR5 will give the states sovereignty again. HEA will save taxpayers money. Again, both of these points have been proven to be smoke in our eyes to blind us from the stark reality of what is really written in both bills! Both bills are the babies of not only Sen. Alexander, but a wide array of the CCSS Machine members–both public and private citizens and/or their corporations. Many hours by dedicated researchers have shared all of the above and even more tied to BOTH bills.

So, what can you do? Tell your Congress members to kill BOTH bills..not just one. Where one dies, the other can live on and be implemented even moreso in our laws. Don’t let the CCSS Machine continue to use the law to hide behind or be embedded in when Common Core (and all that goes with it) are ILLEGAL in the first place!

We don’t have time for emails, snail mails, we MUST call ASAP!
Call the United States Capitol switchboard at 1-202-224-3121.  The switchboard operator will connect you with the office you request. Call your Congress members, call the Congress members who don’t represent you. Call every single Congress member on the Education and Workforce Committees; the Education Appropriations Committees; the Early Education Committees; the Committees overseeing alternative education, special education. Make your voice be heard, Warriors..our country needs you..NOW! Remember, we’ve been given an educational menu of apples gone bad. We need a different menu for our students.

RMT: Halting a CCSS/CTE aligned Workforce?

CCSS/CTE/CCR/Career Pathways/Career Clusters/Aligned Apprentices = Epic Fail for America!
CCSS/CTE/CCR/Career Pathways/Career Clusters/Aligned Apprentices = Epic Fail for America!

To the Warriors against the ‘Core’, we’ve learned over and over that the CCSS Machine has many parts to it. Those parts include Career Clusters, Career Pathways, the American Apprenticeship Initiative, Career and Technical Education, and the  Common  Core Standards (which encompass every subject, including the Arts and PE).

One of the biggest parts of the Machine? That would be the amount of legislation expressly written to protect the embedding of all this illegally based education reform!

To date one of the most important pieces of this type of legislation is the (already passed as  a law in 2014 on the federal level) WIOA. Also known as the Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act. The other key pieces of federal level CCSS Machine protecting legislative moves are the re-authorizations of the ESEA/NCLB (HR5, which has had a name change every time we turn around) and the HEA (Higher Education Act).

So What’s the Riddle, Today?:

As you know, each Sunday, I have a riddle for you. So what’s today’s based on the topic thus far? Can we halt the WIOA’s overreach in any way? Let’s find out.

Scores of articles (several are available right here on my blog; just use the ‘search bar’.) have been written; interviews recorded; documents uncovered (with the express purpose of exposing the vast amount of CCSS/CTE/Career Clusters/Career Pathways, etc.) as proof of the embedded and planned course to reshape America starting with education. In the past, the message had been somewhat marginalized.

However, it appears the message is gaining a wider voice and many citizens are recognizing action MUST be taken to save our nation!..beginning with education. You see, the trail of the CCSS Machine STARTS at the child care years and steamrolls all the way to career-land. No educational choice will be respected, no citizen left unscathed by the time the full impact of the WIOA, HR5, and HEA are felt…IF left as is, in their current forms!  I’ve inserted 3 visuals below to illustrate my points.

An aligned collective community?! Is this really what CCSSO has begun? Common Core is entrenched in this, folks.
The Initiative named above is connected to the CCSSO (Council of Chief State School Officers) by way of KnowledgeWorks.

The visual below shows what parts of WIOA are already in play to ‘align and mine’ student/workforce data. What’s not in the visual is the language stating how this information pipeline will ‘marry’ with SLDS (Student Longitudinal Data System).

Click to enlarge to see which round your state receive 'align and mine' money. IF you do not see a color on your state, you've not been awarded money yet.
Much like RtTT, states have been awarded incentive money for the WIOA data pipeline.

The 3rd visual is an old one, but is very fitting as to the success of the CCSS Machine’s efforts in WIOA. What’s the ‘secret’? P3s! Public private partnerships. They’ve invested millions of dollars on lobbying for WIOA and advertising it as ‘a good thing’.

P3s, education's nightmare in friendly form.
P3s, education’s nightmare in friendly form.

So, the Answer to Our Riddle?:

Continue to HELP spread the message that WIOA is bad news! That HR5 and HEA are terrible moves!

One of the ways in which you can impact WIOA is to contact your federal level Congress members IMMEDIATELY!

Another way is to use any ‘public comment’ window the federal levels open up. These ‘windows’ are announced; this is true. However, if you don’t know these announcements have been made, how can we participate? We’ve seen this type of move made before by the CCSS Machine and anything connected to its viability.

Currently the U.S. Dept. of Ed has one for WIOA (it is only open until the 15th of June 2015). I’m providing the information below so you CAN share it, respond to it, and be ‘on the record’ as an anti CCSS Warrior.

Here’s the information release (notice no date appears as to when this released was posted) about the public comment window becoming available:
http://www2.ed.gov/about/offices/list/osers/rsa/wioa-reauthorization.html#nprm

Here’s a blog entry I found announcing the public comment window’s time period and supposed changes:
http://www.ed.gov/edblogs/osers/2015/04/osers-seeks-public-comment-on-proposed-rules-to-implement-workforce-innovation-and-opportunity-act/

What the U.S. Dept of Ed isn’t sharing about WIOA is just how embedded in CCSS/CTE the law really is. For that side of the truth, you’ll need facts. Below are some related resources I urge you to dig into.

Related Resources:
