Education’s “Cooked Goose”

Warriors, we know education in America can be considered a ‘hot mess’. The state of education in the ESSA Era (Every Student Succeeds Act) could also be referred to as a ‘train wreck’.

For this article, I chose ‘cooked goose’. Why? It’s meaning as a phrase expresses spoiling plans; ruining someone’s opportunities. In other words, succeeding won’t happen.

Warriors, plainly stated, ESSA will NOT give our student success at what THEY want. It is designed to link itself to the WIOA, STEM Act, HEA, and all other related workforce/education laws. (*WIOA: Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act; STEM is short for Science, Technology, Engineering, and, Math; HEA: Higher Education Act)

Before we point the finger exclusively to Washington, D.C.; we must point it back to the CCSS Machine and it’s association to UNESCO.
************************************************************************************
Yes, before Bill Gates signed that ‘one curriculum for every child’ agreement (2004), there was the UNESCO publication called the International Classification of Standards.
************************************************************************************
The document was used as a basis for a presentation in 2009 by a team of ‘education experts’. Sutton and Golder. What was the point of this team in using a 1997 document?
***********************************************************************************
It was the same thing which prompted Gates to sign his agreement:

By Aligning TECHNOLOGY in EDUCATION, More ALIGNMENT in LIFE

For where’s there technology, there’s data. Where there’s data, there’s money to be made.
Quality education? Left by the wayside, Warriors.
************************************************************************************

Who Are Sutton and Golder?

Dr. Staurt Sutton is from the University of Washington at Seattle
Diny Golder
(aka: Diny Golder-Dardis) is a co-founder of P21 (Partnership for 21st Century Skills) She is also key to JES and Company.
(*Note: the embedded link for Golder is to a 2003 Symposium paper about increasing technology. You’ll see her roles in both capacities mentioned. You’ll also see the U.S. Dept. of Education’s involvement. You’ll also be directed to some external links about the CEO Forum. I was unsuccessful accessing these. However, I did find a 2001 publication by the CEO Forum. It’s cover states it all.)

CEO

Back to Sutton and Golder’s involvement:
Together this team produced 3 white papers together. All 3 were based on increasing technology in our classrooms; for teachers and students. They wrote these 3 papers for the ASN (Achievement Standards Network).

If you’ve not heard of the ASN, it was created by Golder and Sutton with grant money (2 grants) awarded them by the NSF (National Science Foundation), under the JES and Company’s name.

NSF is the group which created the acroynm “STEM” for marketing purposes in education. STEM is a tool used by the UNESCO for pushing the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals) in education.

Helping expand the ASN was a generous Gates grant award in 2012 to JES and Co.

In 2013, my dear anti CCSS Warrior friend, Donna Garner, published an article tying ASN, Jes and Co. to the CSCOPE (TX’s supposedly not-CCSS educational framework and standards) and the EdGate organization.

donnawork
************************************************************

ASN is now owned by D2L. D2L was founded in 1999 by John Baker of Canada. Today, D2L has some of the biggest CCSS Machine members as partners. Their ‘job’? Tying more technology and education together.)

Other Sutton and Goldar Work:

In 2008, it was a paper on matching education resources to education standards for all the grade levels between K and 12th grade. This document appears to be for the National Science Digital Library. It’s about how to use metadata.
In 2009, it was all about discovering concepts in education via learning objectives. It is in this document they base their findings and solutions off of the 1997 UNESCO Report. (*Note: the 2010 paper they wrote was for Australia’s curriculum and configuring it to RDFs).

SuttonGolderUN
UNESCO:

The 1997 Standards document was updated, just 2 years later (1999). It is in this one where you’ll begin to see the UIS (UNESCO Institute for Statistics) begin to surface.

STATISTICS means DATA; DATA needs MINING to be put into STATISTICS.
*********************************************************************************
Look at the way it’s portrayed on the website:

undata

Look at the reality of data ‘transformation’:

UNdatatrack

Warriors, why would I use ‘track’? Think about it, the technology increases in American classrooms are designed to track progress; to measure mental abilities. These results are then used to track the courses/classess and eventual careers. ESSA, WIOA, and HEA embed it. STEM increases it! There’s another reason I chose the word ‘track’:

pressureon
Warriors, ‘technical’ means technology use, which we know is data. We also know, that technology is part of ‘innovation’. Innovation has been used as a tool to update ‘infrastructure’. Education is being used as a tool to pump up jobs and the economy.

Do we see ANYWHERE in these contrived plots: a child’s desire to become what THEY want? Do we see anywhere how teachers can TEACH without conformity?! NO!

Education’s goose has been royally cooked!

I urge you to read the information from the above screen shot here. It will lay out the indicators by which our students and teachers will be aligned to. It will explain how this data is to be used, and include the GAML (Global Alliance to Monitor Learning). The GAML is doing its own ‘cooking geese’ with assessments and data mining.

Warriors, remember, the SDGs are all to be in place by 2030.

Tying This Back To The American Push for Technology/Data:

Warriors, the way ESSA is written, an huge increase in technology, data mining is in the works. It is because of the foundational shift created in part, by folks like Sutton and Goldar, that we are so far down the path to comply with the U.N.
Sutton and Goldar are hardly alone. We know the CCSS Machine has been infiltrating companies, legislators, and everywhere in between to force us to assimilate into the overall plan to ruin education.

One of the biggest data mining tools which unites education and jobs, here in America are the SLDS and the WQDI (Student Longitudinal Data System and Workforce Quality Data Initiative). These track your student (regardless of their educational choice) from the classroom to their careers…and beyond.

The Best For The Worst

Welcome back, my fellow Anti Fed Ed/CCSS Warriors!

I’ve returned home after a bittersweet journey. That said, let’s dive in, shall we?!
*******************************************************************************

In playing ‘catch up’ on the latest education news, I found this ‘lovely’ rotten apple:
The CCSSO (Council of Chief State School Officers) has been given an award for being one of the BEST non-profit groups in our nation!

If you missed this news, it is no surprise. It was announced on the CCSSO’s Press Release Page on 4/1/17 (aka: April Fool’s Day). CCSSO’s Twitter account waited to ‘tweet’ the news the same day as the first ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act) deadline expired. In fact, if you use Twitter and wish to see all the ‘cheering tweets’ CCSSO gave each State as they ‘lined up’ for ESSA (per the U.S. Dept. of Ed’s website), find them here.

ccssobest

Warriors, I hope you see not only the irony of the dates used, but the groups involved. It’s been known for quite some time how tied to the CCSS Machine the CCSSO is. The same is true for the U.S. Dept. of Education, too.
**************************************************************

So, what group(s) are involved in recognizing the CCSSO as ‘one of the best’?

The NonProfit Times:

First, here’s a quote from the CCSSO Press Release about the “The NonProfit Times”: “This is the second year that CCSSO made the list of 50 organizations recognized. The NonProfit Times partnered with Best Companies Group, Inc. on this report.”

NPTimes

What we need to know about the NonProfit Times is this: It is a publication of the BridgeTower Media group. BridgeTower Media uses its’ research arm, the Best Companies Group, Inc., for ’employee satisfaction’ data collection.

Crossing Over On A Bridge:

BridgeTower Media is the business arm of GateHouse Media: “BridgeTower Media is the business-to-business media division of Gatehouse Media, the largest publisher of daily newspapers in the United States.” Source

However, Warriors, BridgeTower is a ‘rebrand’ in business news! See below:

B2B
See the rest of the article.

Enter The Warriors:

So, how does this involve what we are experiencing in classrooms? Why as an Anti Fed Ed/CCSS Warrior should I take notice?

1) Technology is really big deal in modern education. Technology means data collection, sharing, and, power. Power for those who capture it/loss of power in our privacy. So, apply the following in that context.

SoftBank has a “Vision Plan. Technology is the root of the Plan. Also involved in the “Plan” is Saudi Arabia. The Plan includes increasing globally led AI (Artificial Intellegience). Apple, Inc. has already jumped into the Plan. Apple, Inc. is also part of the CCSS Machine’s overreach into educational settings.

GateHouse Media is considered America’s largest publisher of daily news. GateHouse, thus has tremendous influence in our local areas. Consider this, the single largest investor (Fortress Investment Group, LLC)  in GateHouse Media was sold to a Japanese based investment group (SoftBank Group Corp.) earlier this year!

2) Warriors, a globally based investment group has been able to get their collective foot further into our American doorways by making such a move. The evidence for globally-led influence in American education is becoming stronger every day.

3) Notes: Technology-based education was given the go-ahead with the passage of WIOA (2014’s Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act), STEM Act of 2015 (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math), and the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act, 2015). Technology based education in the HEA (Higher Education Act, 2008) will most certainly received the ‘go-ahead’ for streamlined education when it is re-authorized.

Current leadership in D.C. is ‘hell-bent’ on expanding technology, especially in classrooms. A huge portion of federal funds has been earmarked for technology purchases and upgrades via ESSA.

So, how does all this tie back to the CCSSO’s ‘award’?!

You have a  massive global group with plenty of CCSS Machine ties congratulating ANOTHER CCSS Machine member for being a best ‘non profit’ group. Non profit groups have been used for years to usher in the education reform.

We are on a  fast track set for meeting the U.N.’s global education goals as written out in the SDGs (Sustainable Development Goals)!

Technology will render ‘school choice’ a thing of the past. ESSA’s implementation will render true ‘school choice’ as a thing of the past.

The digital overload thanks to ESSA.
The SDGs in our educational resources.

Closing:

Warriors,  the CCSSO should receive no reward for anything it does.  By the acknowledgement as one of the best places to work, according to the NonProfit Times, those employees are rubbing our noses it what they do for the CCSSO. Helping lead the way in un-Americanizing education.

There is a place for CCSSO and every other CCSS Machine member group.  It’s called “Traitors Gate”.

FTF: A Chip off The Education Block

Sure, you've heard of private schools, but have you heard of 'micro' schools?!
Sure, you’ve heard of private schools, but have you heard of ‘micro’ schools?!

Anti CCSS Warriors, we have another education reform ‘wannabe’. Consider it a chip off the old CCSS Machine’s block.. What AM I talking about?! “Micro Schools”, of course! If you haven’t heard of them, that’s okay, I recently discovered these schools, too.
One other question we will address is how this ties back to the ESSA (Every Student Succeeds Act).

So, What is a ‘Micro School’?

I found out about them via the Gates Foundation supportive, CCSS Machine member: Ed Week. (See: http://www.edweek.org/ew/articles/2016/01/27/micro-schools-could-be-new-competition-for.html?r=608439843&cmp=eml-enl-eu-news1-RM)

Like its name, these schools are small in size (typically no more than an entire school population of 150). Unlike traditional schools, micros have all the students in one classroom.  While the article suggests these schools are like the old-fashioned one room schoolhouses, there is absolutely NOTHING old fashioned about the agenda behind these small schools. As an anti CCSS Warrior, see if you can catch the agenda the CCSS Machine has laced through these modern minis.

AltSchools, the Supposed Leader in Micro Schools:

This group is mentioned in the article I have linked you to (above). You can access their website, https://www.altschool.com/
From their ‘About Us’ page, their mission statement begins with, ” AltSchool is a collaborative community of micro-schools that uses outstanding teachers, deep research, and innovative tools to offer a personalized, whole child learning experience for the next generation.”
(*Note, be sure to watch the embedded video with the smiley faced guy.)
You should love the fact he is a businessman now involved in education. While that doesn’t seem so bad, listen to his pro CCSS companies he rattles off. (example: Google) Don’t miss his plug for project based learning (which is rooted in another progressive, pro CCSS Machine member, The Buck Institute. (my previously published look at PBLs:
https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/10/25/sic-em-saturday-ccss-progressives-and-pbls/ )

Currently, AltSchools are in CA, NY, IL. To see the AltSchool locations in their entirety,
https://www.altschool.com/about-us#our-parents
(*Note, be sure to click on one of the existing locations to look at the floor plan. You will see what many other traditional schools are doing, totally transforming them to be open locations with centers.)

The curriculum? Forget about seeing your student as a person, this group is after “T-shaped learners”.  What the heck is a “T-shaped learner”? An excerpt, “…Students who have a wide breadth of knowledge across all subjects and depth in the subjects that they are passionate about. In addition to cultivating strong social-emotional skills, AltSchool students build competency across core academic areas: math, science, English language arts, and social studies. Through our before- and after-school co-curricular offerings, students delve even deeper into subjects of interest, including drama, arts, coding, and foreign languages.”
The educators? All 21st Century ones. See the entire description of both curriculum and educators, https://www.altschool.com/education#curriculum
(*Note: the heavy use of technology and the reference to aligning to the most recent education discoveries.)
From the FAQs, this loaded statement of CCSS Machine groups in the curriculum:
‘AltSchool’s learning objectives draw from a variety of standards and metrics as a framework for instructional design. Our Lower and Middle School instruction is informed by the Common Core, National Council of the Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), Next Generation Science Standards, International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), Partnership for 21st Century Skills, and the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL), among others.’

Helping fund AltSchools? Facebook and Apple owners! Yep,  these two pro CCSS Machine members even made the news about their investments. See: http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2015/05/04/altschool-scores-100-million-from-mark-zuckerberg-and-others/26740867/
(*Note: be sure to read where the AltSchool founder reveals that there are non-profits and other investors on board as well.)

Other financial backers? “Founders Fund, Andreessen Horowitz, First Round Capital, Harrison Metal, John Doerr, Jonathan Sackler, Learn Capital, Omidyar Network, and other leading investors.” To learn more about why these investors are lining up in huge support of AltSchools, you will need to see the AltSchools Press Release from 2014. It explains that the schools are a ‘certified B organization’. What does THAT mean? Heavy on social justice issues with a large collective mindset. See the entire press release: https://www.altschool.com/press-release-11-17-14

Want to better understand what a B Organization truly is? As an anti CCSS Warrior, you will be quick to pick up on the main themes, the global aspects, and the money to be made.

New Orleans, TX, and Globally: Micros Coming Soon!

Also included in the featured EdWeek article about AltSchools, were the facts that New Orleans public charters are considering the AltSchool way of education; that at least one private school in TX is already involved (since 2009); that  Catholic schools could be well served; how  comprehensive high schools could learn from AltSchools; and, that several non-USA locations are benefiting from AltSchools.
Warriors Against the Core
, are you seeing the pattern?

Not included in the NAIS:

AltSchools, according to the EdWeek article are not being tracked by the NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools), so there may be many MORE micro schools in the world. However, my question is, are AltSchools accredited at all? One CBS interview from 2015, reveals the groups is in the process of becoming accredited. See: http://www.cbsnews.com/news/altschool-alternative-education/
Anti CCSS Warriors, do you recognize an issue here?

As Far as How This Plays into the ESSA:

Besides the red flags I have recently raised about the ESSA and technology/data/digital, the AltSchools have all sorts of CCSS Machine ties to overlook or assume they won’t be part of the ESSA written educational future in America. All this said, the AltSchools are considered ‘alternative education’. That phrase is most definitely used in the ESSA.

FTF: Revisit to Redesigned CCSS High School

Anti CCSS Warriors, back in May 2015, I shared with you the article about the “Redesigning American High Schools”. However, just yesterday, I had a warrior from the NE USA, send me the picture you’ll see below. It’s part of the “XQ, American Super School Project”.

Be sure to click on this picture to enlarge it.
Be sure to click on this picture to enlarge it.

To access my May 2015 article, see: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/05/09/sic-em-saturday-aligned-summer/
To access the document about the redesign, you can search the internet for “Reinventing the American High School for the 21st Century” from the Association of Career and Technical Education, published 2006 or click here. Reinventing_American_High_School  Part one of this older document shows you the (then) current efforts to redesigning American High Schools. Go back and read what those efforts were when you can. However, for the rest of this report, we’ll look at the XQ Project and even more related to it.

Apple’s Part:

The XQ Project” has ties to Apple, Inc. (as in the computers branded “Apple”) Who’s behind “XQ”? Steve Jobs widow. See: http://mobile.nytimes.com/2015/09/14/us/laurene-powell-jobs-commits-dollar50-million-to-create-new-high-schools.html?referrer&_r=0
If you’re not sure who Steve Jobs was, he was one of the co-founders of Apple Computers. Now known as “Apple, Inc.”.  How is Apple connected to CCSS? CTE? For starters, see the ‘education’ section of the Apple, Inc.’s website: http://www.apple.com/education/connectED/

Here’s another Apple/CCSS, CTE tie, the assessments connected to CCSS/CTE, see: http://www.cft.org/news-publications/newsletters/california-teacher/september-october-2013/a-year-of-transition-preparing-for-the-common-core-standards.html

What’s “ConnectEd”? The ConnectEd is a direct link to the White House and more CCSS/CTE. How? Digitally, my fellow warriors. See the pdf document:
https://www.whitehouse.gov/sites/default/files/docs/connected_fact_sheet.pdf
The ‘smoking gun’ for ConnectEd, digital, and CCSS? Race-to-the-Top! See: http://www2.ed.gov/programs/racetothetop-district/index.html

The XQ Project:

Website: http://xqsuperschool.org/challenge
The mission/challenge is longer than the excerpt I’m including, but it’s important you see this much.
“The Super School Project is an open call to reimagine and design the next American high school. In towns and cities far and wide, teams will unite and take on this important work of our time: rethinking and building schools that deeply prepare our students for the rigorous challenges of college, jobs, and life.”

xq

So What Does “XQ” stand for? According to the website, it’s a combination of one’s IQ (your cognitive abilities)  and your EQ (how well you learn with others) to create something ‘extra special’. To learn more about how this is to all work together for rigor for all, see: http://xqsuperschool.org/about (*NOTE: you’ll also see the ‘collective’ partnerships)
If you’d like to see the student led ‘voices’ connected to the XQ, visit: http://xqsuperschool.org/voices
As far as much more information, you’ll find it’s not very transparent, at least on the website.

However, jump over to Twitter, look up the #Rethinkhighschool and you’ll see celebrities, athletes, and others weighing in with ideas like ”What if parents got tax deductions based on their kids grades?”(Ashton Kutchner) and “We talk a lot about innovation and problem solving, but we aren’t training our kids to do it.” (Joe Montana)
However, the tweets worth noticing aren’t from the rich and famous, they are from groups which support aligned assessments, more in-depth skills based learning, and on and on. Watch for “New Tech Network” and “American Dream Schools”. The former supports the deep learning, the latter is on a mission to transform thousands of high schools in the next 10 years. (*Note: “American Dream Schools” has 2 Twitter accounts, one tagged “Deeper Learning” as well as their ADS name).

American Dream Schools:

Their website: http://www.righttosucceed.org/
Serving advisors include a Gates Foundation Senior member as well as a member of the IL Charter Schools! (See: http://www.righttosucceed.org/#!advisors/c165s)
Their take on the educational crisis? Preventing drop outs in high school. Here’s an excerpt from one of the co-founders, “I worry that education reform is so focused on what we are fighting against (bad schools, bad teachers, bad unions, bad districts, bad funding, bad parenting, bad kids, and bad communities) that there is no vision about what we should be fighting for – great schools for every neighborhood!”

Want to see what a real ADS looks like? (be prepared..it’s about preparing for the workplace)

Notice, this began in Napa Valley, CA (very close by is Silicon Valley, where many businesses are. As are many venture capitalists. How do these play into this redesigned education movement? See my previously published article: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2014/09/16/from-the-files-tuesday-down-in-the-valley/

Deeper Learning:

Their website: http://deeperlearning4all.org/
Their base of research appears to be AIR (American Institutes of Research), however they also use PISA assessments and other well connected CCSS/CTE/CCR groups or tools. In fact, I’m sharing with you the 30 CCSS results I got when I searched the website for “Common Core” (see:
http://deeperlearning4all.org/?s=Common+Core&source=global)

If you’d like to see just how deeply the Deeper Learning folks are into all things Common Core (including college and career readiness (CCR), career technical education (CTE), be sure to look at the ‘resources’ page. Just be sure you have something to throw at the wall when you read it all..it’s like a ‘who’s who’ of agenda laden CCSS supporters. (see: http://deeperlearning4all.org/resources)

The group behind “Deeper Learning” is the “Alliance for Excellent Education”. I wrote about AEE back in July 2015. See: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/07/13/todays-the-day-will-ecaa-survive/
Why do I bring up the Alliance? Simple, refer to their statement on student data dashboards. http://all4ed.org/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/DataDashboards.pdf

Here’s what the cover illustration looked like:

Note how your student is to be measured. Note what's missing!
Note how your student is to be measured. Note what’s missing!

Closing:

It seems the ties to connect all of the above are in reality quite simple. Data, agenda, and our schools. The chokehold on our schools? The Common Core State Standards Initiative and all that it encompasses. The payoff for the likes of Apple, Project XQ, Deeper Learning, the Gates Foundation, the Alliance for Excellent Education, and all those others joined at the hip? A manageable trained workforce creating a rich economy for a select few.

FTF: Anti CCSS Files Recap

It's been a good year, so far, to fight the CCSS Machine!
It’s been a good year, so far, to fight the CCSS Machine!

In continuing to look back at the anti CCSS year so far, today’s article will share the best files I’ve been able to offer you in aiding your battle against Common Core.

In no particular order, here are the ‘files’ most important and worth sharing again.

American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education:

This info packed article from March, 2015 gave you an in-depth look at how aligned to not only Common Core, but, Career and Technical Education this group is. In it you’ll find connections to Pearson Publishing, Linda Darling-Hammond, Stanford University, and Sage Publishing to name a few pro CCSS supporters. You’ll also have access to the letter the AACTE wrote to Sec. Arne Duncan!

To access all the files related to AACTE, see: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/03/24/ftf-tuesday-aacte-and-common-core/

AIR and the ‘Pathways To College’:

What do the massive data miners AIR (American Institute of Research) and an on-line library have in common? “Pathways to College” , as well as the Alliance for Excellent Education! You might recognize Pathways to College is very similar to those  like ‘Career Pathways’, ‘College and Career Pathways’, ‘Career Clusters’, and ‘Career and Technical Education’. Yes, ALL of these names are connected to Common Core. The online library featured in this article from February of this year will also share with you how Horace Mann’s philosophy of education is tied in. You’ll also get to know much more about those high stake assessments, too!

To access this all important set of pdf files, see: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/02/03/ftf-tuesday-comprehending-assessments/

Our Students as Part of the “Talent Supply Pipeline”:

From January, 2015, here’s another article with Linda Darling-Hammond, Career and Technical Education, and what is known as “Adult Common Core”. Yes, you read correctly..’adult CC’. You’ll also note, as I’ve stated many times, that while all 50 states may not of adopted CCSS, ALL 50 states have Workforce training, Career and College Readiness plans. In this article, I shared with you North Carolina’s current status in all this as an example of what to look for in your state; the Adult CC Caucus information on a federal level was also revealed in this published article. There’s lots to delve into the learn all you can about the plans to turn ALL our students (regardless of educational choice or age) into ‘talent supply’ to churn down the CCSS/CTE/CCR (Common Core State Standards/Career and Technical Education/College and Career Readiness) pipeline!

To access the ‘game changer’ article, see: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/01/20/ftf-tuesday-career-readiness-and-data/

The SBA and Common Core:

The discovery of the Small Business Administration and its ties to Common Core, set a few readers and/or followers aback with shock. I shared all kinds of news, findings, and documents back in February 2015. So just  how is the SBA tied to the CCSS Machine? Funding initiatives, business ventures, and capital investments. You’ll see pro friendly CCSS corporations like Apple, Intel, and Hewlett-Packard.

To see how this federal agency is helping spread educational overreach, see: https://commoncorediva.wordpress.com/2015/02/10/ftf-the-sba-and-common-core/

Closing:

Are there aspects about anything related to Common Core you’d like me to investigate to see what files are available? I’d be honored to dive into it for you, if you’d like me to. As you’ve been able to see from each of the articles above, I don’t tell you what to think, I point you to where to look so you can use what you need for your state’s fight in this war against the Core.

Common Core and the SBA:

For this “From the File” Tuesday, I have a ‘hum-dinger’ for you. The SBA (as in the ‘Small Business Administration’) has been supporting Common Core. How do I know? A Oct. 2014 National Summit.

The Summit:

Titled the “National Summit of Middle Market Funds” (see: https://www.sba.gov/content/national-summit-middle-market-funds), Maria Contreras-Sweet (the SBA’s administrator) addressed those in attendance how the SBIC (Small Business Investment Company) has been giving us ‘common sense financial reform’.

Refer the the above website for the entire speech text. *Note: while the speech does spell out what SBIC/SBIA stands for, I looked them up for you. I hope you learned something new. I sure did. I had no clue the SBA had a ‘alliance’. But, hey, how much else have we learned in fighting CC that ties one group to yet another.

Okay, so where’s the Common Core? Wait for it…it’s coming.

First, however:
SBICs have helped Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Intel, and others with over $67 billion dollars. Did you catch those names? There are others, too.

Here’s HP’s Common Core support proof: http://h20195.www2.hp.com/V2/getpdf.aspx/4AA5-3577ENUC.pdf?ver=2.0

Here’s Apple’s Common Core support proof:

Intel’s Common Core support proof, an excerpt from “Education Week”.
“Carlos Contreras, the director of U.S. education for tech giant Intel, said his company has been discussing the importance of the common core at forums for its employees, with the idea that those workers will become ambassadors for the standards.” (see: http://blogs.edweek.org/edweek/marketplacek12/2013/09/business_execs_fight_for_common_core_before_its_too_late.html)

So, is that all the CC/SBA proof you’ve got, Lynne? Not by a long shot, folks!

SBA funding venture capitalists:

Maybe not a secret, but many VCs (venture capitalists) are those P3s (Public Private Partnerships) which we’ve seen run amuck with Common Core. I’m not saying every VC or P3, but I think you know the ones I’m referring to. Here’s what the SBA Admin. said, “Many of the first venture capital funds in the United States were SBICs. This program is one of the most successful private-public partnerships in existence. I always tell people SBICs are the best deal on the market. We provide the capital you need to employ your investment strategy, but we don’t take any carry, so you can reap the full benefits from your investments.”

Why this type of thing is a BIG deal for those fighting Common Core:
In case you weren’t following me ‘way back when’, here’s what I uncovered about some of those venture capitalists dreams for education. Again, I have no clue if the ones I discovered are ones which have benefited from the SBA’s foray into VCs, but consider this truth, no matter the source, there are VCs out there intent on reforming education. SBA’s funding the Core activities:

Thanks to the speech’s text, you can find many nuggets in what was stated. For example, the 2011 Impact Fund, which has recently been extended beyond it’s original stop date of fiscal year 2016. Where’s the money going? Here’s an excerpt, “The SBA launched our Impact Fund in 2011 as a five-year pilot to support President Obama’s vision of a more inclusive and sustainable economy. The Fund was set to expire at the end of FY2016. Last month, we announced plans to continue and expand this fund as vital and ongoing part of our SBIC portfolio. What we’re focused on with this fund is investments in underserved areas, and we want to work with fund managers with expertise in clean energy, education, and advanced manufacturing. We know you’re all investing in a competitive environment, and it can be challenging to find the right business to differentiate yourself. Our goal is to provide you with more flexibility to facilitate returns in places you may not traditionally look. Impact investing can help you find that gem off the beaten path, one that hasn’t been over-shopped. There’s money to be made in impact investing and some real good to be done, as well.” *Note: while we know education is CCSS’s area, when you consider CTE, or Career Tech Education’s Clusters, you know energy and manufacturing are in CCSS’s area, as well.

Then, the ‘smoking gun’ for the Core:

One of the BEST examples of the 2011 Impact Fund was this from TX. “In Texas, SJF Capital Funds is investing in a company that’s using educational technology to implement Common Core and raise the math scores of our K-12 students so they can compete for 21st century jobs. They’ve invested in gaming software that allows students to design their own “avatars” and compete in math against their own classmates and other kids across the state. Schools using this technology are reporting double-digit increases in their math scores. That’s the kind of innovation that our SBICs are making possible through impact investing.” *Note: notice the push for more money, more people, especially women; more alignment.
